PRIDE NEWS BRADLEY TURCOTTE

After years of focusing on the Pride festival, Capital Pride (CP) parade coor- dinator Tova Larsen wants to “bring the parade back” and put renewed emphasis on what used to be the centrepiece of the celebrations. “Pride really began with the parade,” Larsen says. “We focused so much as a festival on the festival grounds over the past number of years.” Larsen commends last year’s parade coordina- tor, Murray Lavigne, for his outstanding work but says, “There hasn’t been somebody sitting on the board really advocating on behalf of the parade.” For many attendees, the parade is Pride, she says; it’s a powerful gathering that helped change her life. “I came out late in life,” says Larsen, who is bisexual. “My fi rst time coming to a Pride parade — all of a sudden it gave me so much hope that I could be like the Mister Leather Ottawa won the 2012 prize for Best Float. An Ottawa man says two men assaulted him Aug 6 on a gay cruising trail in Gatineau Park. Mikey Macfie says he went to the cruising trail around 5:30pm and saw two men fi shing. He estimates both to be in their mid-to-late 20s. One of the men started “giving off signals like he was checking me out and grabbing his crotch,” he says. But something “didn’t feel right,” he says, so he let the man walk by. He then met another man he is familiar with from the trail and the two dis- cussed how the fi shermen made them uncomfortable. Macfi e and the man parted ways, but, he says, he was soon drawn back by someone yelling, “Don’t touch” loudly in French and the sound of breaking branches. When Macfi e returned to the spot, he says, he saw the larger of the two fi shermen chasing his acquaintance. The shorter, “chubbier” man began threatening Macfi e with a fi shing knife and tried to slash him. Macfie says the larger man then kicked him in the face, knocking him to the ground. “Every time I had the Mikey Macfie says one man kicked him in the face while another threatened him with a knife. 26 AUG 15–SEPT 11, 2013 XTRA! OTTAWA’S GAY & LESBIAN NEWS Oh, I don’t get hung over. I just get day-drunk. Out inthe City It’s the way to be. Detox E28 Ottawa Wolves get into Pride spirit When most of us think about rugby, we probably imagine huge, sweaty men in shorts crashing into each other at high velocities as they fi ght over a ball... and then we probably go have some private time. The game is a little bit rough-and-tumble, but players can also create an incredibly welcoming community with a real sense of camaraderie. Such has been the case with the Ottawa Wolves, Ottawa’s LGBT- friendly rugby team. “What I really like about the club is that we are gay-friendly; however, we have a lot of people who don’t identify as gay or lesbian, and it’s because we spend a lot of time developing people brand-new to the sport,” says Johnny Festarini, the team’s captain and director of communications. The Wolves are preparing to host other LGBT clubs from around North America at a tournament in Brewer Park called the Beaver Bowl, named for Canada’s industrious na- tional animal. “We’re just looking for a fun day of rugby,” Festarini says. The tournament coincides with Capital Pride festivities, and the Wolves have a number of events planned for both. First up is Jocks ’n Socks, on Aug 17. The event is a perennial favourite where players model and auction off their jockstraps to support the team. Keeping up the Pride spirit, the team will host a meet-and-greet in full sports gear at the Centretown Pub on Aug 23. The following day is the tournament, and the day after that, the Wolves and members The Ottawa Wolves will auction of visiting teams will march in the Pride parade. —Julie Cruikshank off their jockstraps on Aug 17.
