3 THERE WILL COME A DAY . synopsis

Painful family issues push Augusta, a young Italian woman, to doubt the certainties upon which she had built her existence. On a small boat and within the immensity of the Amazon nature she begins her journey accompanying Sister Franca, a friend of her mother’s, in her mission among the South American villages, discovering even in this remote land the attempts of achievement to becoming as the Western world. And therefore Augusta decides to go on with her journey, leaving the Italian community in order to go to Manaus, where she leaves in a favela. Here, through the meeting of the simple people from the place, she manages to perceive again the atavistic strength of the instinct of life, undertaking “her” journey, as far as isolating herself in the forest, welcoming her pain and finding again love, both with her body and soul. In a dimension where nature assumes a prophetic meaning, where it scans new times and establishes existential priorities, Augusta faces the adventure of the searching of herself, incarnating the universal matter of the meaning of the human existence.

“Years ago I made some TV reports and documentaries in the Amazon. The experience was very emotional and involving due to the spectacular beauty of the nature there, the dilation of time and the simplicity and kindness of the populations, in a situation which naturally leads to a primordial sense of life, to man’s role on earth, to the sense of something beyond existence itself; the sensation of something else, transcendent, present and impalpable. I had many encounters during this trip with Europeans who had decided to dedicate their lives to this place. Among the many figures, I was very curious to hear people talk of an Italian missionary, Augusto Gianola, a Pime missionary who had lived in that area for more than thirty years. A man in search of God, and who as a priest stripped off his pastoral role to lower himself and share the humanity of the simplest and humblest people. His biography, his letters and direct meetings with other people in the Amazon are the starting point for this film project. In that environment where time dilates itself, nature strongly recalls a sense of man’s smallness and precariousness compared to the vastness. Thoughts on who we are, where we come from and what we are doing on earth naturally become part of everyday life, above all during long river journeys. during these, being suspended on the water becomes like suspension of the thought in which the essence of philosophy melts into. The contradiction with the Western world, with our dominant concept of happiness, is strong: we have conquered a lot, in some ways we have – we own – everything, still it is not taken for granted to be satisfied and to being able to share with others not only the everyday life, but also our inner self, often put through unnatural rhythms of life, where the exterior is strongly invasive. And the social – economical crisis of today forces us to acknowledge that many schemes have failed, many certainties have turned out to be vane. I was interested at investigating also that field where the story of a single person – in the moment when she is dealing with an intimate crisis – could actually become an occasion of being put in discussion and of research, even if painful, for a new life style, more suited, more alike, therefore more authentic. In this sense, the story of one is also the human experience of all, universal.”

5 THERE WILL COME A DAY . the characters

AUGUSTA Augusta is a thirty year old woman carrying a big pain: the piled and organized cards of her life have suddenly broken apart, and – almost pushed by the events – she has reached nun Franca in Amazonia. Her look pounds against the infinite horizon, and it seems to wish to go beyond the point where the river meets with the sky, but it’s especially when she looks into the eyes the Indian children that her heart melts. Inside of her burst two opposite forces: the desire to look for certainties in which finding peace and the awareness of the doubts that shake her. For this reason she doesn’t accept easy solution and – on the contrary – she feels the need to go to discover the life where it shows itself as strong in all its contradictions. For this reason she struggles at keeping in contact with her mother, who she loves and with whom she shares a pain, but from whom she maybe also feels a sort of resignation. In the favela of Manaus she lives with the residents struggles and fights, she finds again the spontaneity and vitality. She builds strong relationships and she confronts herself also with the harnesses of a life which, in name of the necessity to survive, shows its opposites: it pushes some people towards opportunisms and acts of violence, but also makes us realize that the chance to be happy resides first of all within ourselves.

NUN FRANCA God has called, she has gone. The faith of nun Franca doesn’t know the torment of the doubt. It is a simple faith to the limit of being naïve in her total dedication, born in her when she was still an adolescent, such as her passion for the Indios and the Caboclos, for whom she worries with love and for whom she keeps visiting by herself without rest the villages along the effluents of the Amazon River for over 20 years. She is a strong, determined, frank woman, but who struggles to go out of the “missionary” look on the Indios populations and therefore to really understand the psychology and the culture of those people.

ANNA, Augusta’s mother A sixty year old with an ordinary life, divided between the memories of a husband who’s not with her anymore and the thought of the daughter who left, while she’s taking care of her mother, Antonia. In the apparent banality of her everyday life Anna is anaesthetized to the life and she struggles to express her emotions. Her maternal feeling, strong and instinctual, is blocked by the sense of guilt of non having been able to accept the pain of her daughter and being close to her.

ANTONIA, Augusta’s grandmother Her strong and proud character is not threatened by her age, and it is the same one that she sees in the look of Augusta, even though their vision of life is – inevitably – different. She looks at things as they should have been and not how they have actually been, behind an apparent strength that still lets out the fear of needing the help of others and the desire of still wishing to take care of the facts of the daughter and the grand daughter.

Father MIRKO In the intimate father Mirko is sincere, his goal is the wellbeing of the Amazonian people. A being that he doesn’t know how to measure if not with his work, with the number of faithful Catholics gained to the cause. With quantity and not with the solidity of the conversions. He is the mirror of that part of religious people of the missionary Church that founds its intervention on big actions: not only hospitals, schools, but churches bigger and bigger and touristic centers, bricks on bricks, built thanks to the money flow coming Europe. He is certain to do well, and the only possibility of eventual evolution and development is the one offered from the white people.

6 Father FERNANDO Forty years, Jesuit, is the opposite of Father Mirko. He works as a health operator, he believes in the concrete help for who is in need. He listens to others and puts himself to their service. He believes that Gospel should be lived, not preached, and that based on the example could happen a real conversion.

ARIZETE Mather and grandmother, around her – in the stilt house – she has a big family that she organizes moved by the feeling and the value of being part of the community. She meets by accident Augusta at the Health Center of father Ferdinando and later she welcomes her in Manaus as if she was her daughter.

JANAINA Grandchild of Arizete. More or less still an adolescent and already mother of a child, as most of the Amazonian girls who live either in stilt houses or in villages along the river. She’s a kind of woman in which Augusta can’t avoid to reflect herself. Janaina is already a mother who lives in misery but with great dignity, she’s very simple, mature: her freedom from prejudices and preconceptions, from senses of guilt, are an invitation to leaving, and let that the life expresses itself and in this rut rises a friendship with Augusta. When, following a tragic event, Janaina will come to Italy – almost as exchanging existence with Augusta – their bond, even in the distance, will acquire an even stronger value.

JOÃO Twenty year old grandchild of Arizete, good guy, worker: rare as a hen’s teeth in the stilt house community where machismo is the rule. Though him, even though there is an age gap, Augusta feels again the desire for a love story, to let herself go. But João is also son of the contradictions, and of that land where the priority is still to get out of misery: this will take him to make decisions in contrast with the community where he lives.

Director, scriptwriter and editor he is born in Bologna on the 21st of December 1959. As author and director he directs documentaries, short films and television programs. In the cinema field his first short film “Cappello da marinaio” (1990) has been selected for numerous international festivals, among which the one of Clermont‐Ferrand. In 1993 he made “Quasi un anno”, a movie for the TV produced by Ipotesi Cinema and RAI 1. His debut film, “Il vento fa il suo giro” (2005), participates to more than 60 national and international film festivals, winning about forty awards. It receives 5 candidacies to the David of Donatello 2008 (among which Best Film, Best Outstanding director, Best Producer and Best Script) and 4 candidacies to the Nastri D’argento 2008. The film also becomes a “national case”, and gets screened at the movie theatre Mexico in Milan for more than one year and a half. His second film, “L’uomo che verrà” (2009), gets presented in the official selection of the International Film Festival of Rome 2009, where it gets the Gran Premio della Giuria Marc'Aurelio D'argento, the Premio Marc'Aurelio D'oro del Pubblico and the Premio "La Meglio Gioventù". Released on the 22nd pf January 2010 it participates to many Italian and international festivals receiving numerous recognitions. It wins the awards Premi as Best Film, Best producer and Best Sound at the David di Donatello 2010 and the awards as Best producer, Best scenography and Best sound at the Nastri d'Argento 2010. Simultaneously to the film, documentary and audiovisual activity, Giorgio Diritti actively works in the theatre world where he produces and directs many shows, one among these "Novelle fatte al piano" presented for the first time in 2010 in Rome for the opening of the first edition of the literature Festival for young people called La Tribù dei lettori. The show is created associating, re‐editing and playing with images from the years Ten to the Sixties of the Nineteenth Century in order to make rise again the terrestrial and extraterrestrial universe of Gianni Rodari, under the shape of a ‘filmic’ and musical dramaturgy. Between 2010‐2011 Diritti directs "Gli occhi gli alberi le foglie", a theatrical and cinematographic consideration on the sense of the education and the teaching, presented for the first time in occasion of the inauguration of the academic year of the Università of Bologna. The attention towards the cinema of reality and the bond with Bologna mark during all this time the works of Giorgio Diritti who in 2012 realizes a documentary for the new circuit of Bolognese museums Genus Bononiae in which he reveals, through a virtual walking in the streets and among the prople of Bologna, the heritage that have made his city famous during the centuries.

LUMIÈRE & CO. comes to life in 1994 as a movie production company and as a society for services for the show business as an initiative of Lionello Cerri and of a few members of Anteo, Milanese movie theatre founded in 1979. The project takes origin from the desire to becoming active subjects in the Italian movie production industry, taking advantage from Lionello’s own consolidated experience in the field of the Italian and European market. From 2000 to 2003 Lumière & Co. operates as Albachiara spa, founded along with Mikado and De Agostini, and of which Lionello Cerri is managing director.

Aranciafilm is a movie, theatre and television production and distribution company, founded in 2003 by Giorgio Diritti (director, scriptwriter, editor and producer), Simone Bachini (producer) and Mario Brenta (director). With the intent to make independent and quality products, it has produced in 2005 the first long feature, “The wind blows round”, shot in the Occitan valleys in Piemonte and realized with a small budget and thanks to a productive strategy characterized by participation contracts with all the members of the troupe and to the synergies created on location. The film has toured the world through more than 60 Festivals, it has been screened for 18 months at the Cinema Mexico in Milan and winning about forty awards, besides the nominations as Best production and Best film at the David di Donatello 2008. The second long movie, “The Man who will come”, has participated to the competition selezion at the Festival Internazionale del Film di Roma in 2009, and it has won the Gran Premio della Giuria Marc'Aurelio D'argento, the Premio Marc'Aurelio D'oro del Pubblico and the Premio "La Meglio Gioventù". It has also received the awards as Best film, Best Producer and Best sound at the David di Donatello 2010; the award as Best producer and Best scenography and best sound at the Nastri d'Argento 2010. Simultaneously to the cinema activity, Aranciafilm develops productions in the documentary, audiovisual and theatrical field. A particular one is destined to the EXPO of Shanghai 2010: thirty clips realized with the intent to exalt the artistic and historical peculiarities of our Country. In 2012 he produces for the Museo della Città di Bologna the documentary directed by Giorgio Diritti and destined to the circuit of Bolognese museums in which, through an ideal walk in the streets and among the people of Bologna, he reveals a precious heritage, which has made great this city during the centuries. In the theatre field the company has produced two shows directed by Giorgio Diritti: in 2010 "Novelle fatte al piano" that, through a ‘filmic’ and musical dramaturgy, has allowed to the terrestrial and extraterrestrial universe of Gianni Rodari to rise again. Between 2010 and 2011, "Gli occhi gli alberi le foglie", a theatrical and cinematographic consideration on the sense of education and of teaching.
