  • Stock Contractors
STOCK CONTRACTORS Bar T Rodeo’s Fancy Pants, looking 100 percent focused just before bucking off his Round 9 cowboy, was named top saddle bronc of the 2011 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, capping a Kerby-Flitton family celebration that started at the PRCA Awards Banquet Nov. 30 when Bar T won the 2011 Remuda Award for providing the best pen of bucking horses at PRCA rodeos. PRCA ProRodeo photo by Greg Westfall Stock Contractors Working behind the scenes from long before the rodeo begins until the last animal is loaded up, stock contractors may be the most overlooked people in rodeo production. While cowboys get most of the recognition, the livestock at PRCA rodeos plays a vital role in the success of the contestants. In roughstock events, the cowboy’s riding ability produces half the score and the animals’ ability to buck powerfully and skillfully earns the other half. For the timed events, stock contractors work to provide cattle of similar size for each event, so that cowboys are tested on their own skills – on a level playing field. The stock contractors’ primary goal is to ensure that the four-legged athletes of professional rodeo are healthy, well-fed, properly cared for and fit to perform. This job includes tasks familiar to all ranchers: breeding livestock with the desired characteristics, loading and transporting animals safely, providing veterinary care and supervising handling. Rodeo stock contractors also have sport-specific jobs, including working behind the chutes to ensure safety for both people and animals, caring for animals during the rodeo itself – even handling public relations for the sport’s animal superstars.

  • Clovis Rodeo to Dedicate Bronze Statue Commemorating Centennial
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Alfreda Sebasto 559-285-1237 cell Tuesday, April 22, 2014 [email protected] Clovis Rodeo to Dedicate Bronze Statue Commemorating Centennial (Clovis, California): The Clovis Rodeo Association will dedicate a bronze statue at the front of the rodeo grounds on Wednesday, April 23 at 5:30 p.m. in honor of their 100th anniversary. The fourteen (14’) bronze statue of a famous event in the history of the sport of rodeo is located on the Old Town Trail at the entrance to the rodeo grounds. The 100th Clovis Rodeo begins Thursday, April 24 and will run through Sunday, April 27. The bronze statue is of legendary, world-champion bull rider Lane Frost’s 1988 ride on the equally legendary and un-ridden bull Red Rock during the Challenge of the Champions held at the Clovis Rodeo. As a part of the plans for their historic celebration in 2014 the Clovis Rodeo Association commissioned Central Coast artist and Fresno State graduate, Jim Stuckenberg to develop the piece. The Challenge of the Champions was a competition where 1987 World Champion bull rider Lane Frost attempted to ride the legendary Red Rock, a world champion bull that had never been ridden in 309 attempts during his professional rodeo career. The event matched the two champion athletes in seven exhibition matches at different rodeos throughout the Western United States. Frost did not successfully ride Red Rock at the April 1988 Clovis Rodeo, but he eventually rode him for the full 8-seconds at the Redding Rodeo in May of that year for the first time.

  • Clovis Rodeo Set to Celebrate 100 Years of an American Cowboy Tradition Clovis Rodeo 1914 - 2014
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Alfreda Sebasto 559-285-1237 cell Monday, December 23, 2013 559-291-0184 ofc; [email protected] Clovis Rodeo Set to Celebrate 100 Years of An American Cowboy Tradition Clovis Rodeo 1914 - 2014 (Clovis, California): The Clovis Rodeo will celebrate their Centennial year and 100 years of An American Cowboy Tradition in 2014. One of the oldest rodeos in America it was begun in 1914 by the Clovis Women’s Club as a way of bringing friends together to celebrate their community. Recogtnizing the deep roots the rodeo holds in Clovis’ Western Heritage and American history, the Rodeo Association has been hard at work planning an extra special year to highlight the milestone. The celebration began with a cowboy gala in September 2013 and will continue through the Centennial Rodeo to be held April 24-27, 2014. Everything from galas to art shows, history exhibits, books and statues acknowledging the rodeo’s birthday celebration are planned. One of the most exciting parts of the yearlong celebration to date has been the installation of a fourteen foot bronze statue entitled Challenge of Champions that depicts legendary, world-champion bull rider Lane Frost’s 1988 ride on the equally legendary and world champion bucking bull Red Rock on the Old Town Trail at the entrance to the rodeo grounds. The Clovis Rodeo Foundation commissioned Central Coast artist and Fresno State graduate Jim Stuckenberg to create the bronze likeness of Lane Frost’s 1988 attempt to ride the unridden bull Red Rock at the Clovis Rodeo during the Challenge of Champions; an event that now holds a significant place in the history of rodeo.

  • COLORADO MAGAZINE Published Quarterly by the State Historical Society of Colorado
THE COLORADO MAGAZINE Published Quarterly by The State Historical Society of Colorado Vol. XXVI Denver, Colorado, October, 1949 No. 4 Cowboy Sports and the Humane Society · CLIFFORD P. WESTERMEIER* The rodeo season opens and closes in the West. In the course of the year almost every state witnesses this cowboy sport which begins in Denver and ends in San Francisco. A season never passes without a controversy over some phase of rodeo instigated by the local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or by the national American Humane Association. The actions of these societies are directed at "sporting events" which involve cruelty to animals. The illegal sporting events as listed by the A.H.A. are: the goose pull, dog fights, cock fights, bull fights, horse endurance races, and rodeo. To this older list have been added the "headless chicken" displays of a more recent innovation. The appearance of innumerable riding academies in the past few years as easy-money ventures have also come under the close scrutiny of the association. The story of the S.P.C.A. 's action with reference to rodeo is not a new one.
