Before he ascends, Jesus reminds the disciples of the basic message of the Gospel and of the disciples' own important role. They are to proclaim 1st Acts 20:17 -27 Tuesday the Gospel message by their personal witness to the saving power of God. "I am sending Gospel Jn 17:1 -11a the promise of my Father upon you . . . clothed with power from on high." Jesus promises 1st Acts 20:28 -38 to equip the disciples for this important mission. Not only are they receiving a command,

Wednesday - but they're receiving the empowerment they need to move. "He . . . raised his hands, and Gospel Jn 17:11b 19 blessed them." Even now, though the fulfillment of Pentecost is still to come, Jesus gives 1st Acts 22:30; 23:6 -11 them a parting gift before he ascends into heaven. Observances This Week:

Sunday: The Ascension of the Lord; Question: 7th Sunday of Easter; Couldn't Jesus have done more good if he had stayed on earth, rather than ascended into World Communications Day heaven?

Monday: Answer: St. Charles Lwanga & Companions, This is an interesting question! During his earthly life, Jesus gave sight to the blind, healed paralytics, drove out demons, and fed thousands with only a few loaves of bread. Imagine Martyrs what he could have done if he'd never ascended into heaven! Imagine what our world could be! It's an interesting thought to consider, especially as the world faces challenges Wednesday: that only seem to deepen and expand. Yet at the Last Supper, Jesus says, "It is better for St. Boniface, Bishop & Martyr you if I go." Why? His response must have seemed strange to the Apostles at the time. In his place, Jesus says, he will send the Paraclete, the Comforter, the Advocate. He promises Thursday: to send the Holy Spirit. St. Norbert, Bishop Jesus' departure allows the Apostles to become the leaders he has formed them to be. Next Sunday: Jesus is no longer situated in only one geographical location, and his Church will never be a political kingdom. Soon after the Ascension, we celebrate Pentecost—the descent of the Pentecost Sunday Holy Spirit and the radical empowerment of the followers of Jesus. We share in that empowerment and in that mission. Jesus is present in the sacraments, and he is present in us. Through our faith, hope, and love, we are called to be the good he does here on earth!

We continue using the Apostles ’ Creed instead of the Nicene Creed Every parish family is asked to donate in a spirit of genuine at Mass during the Easter season. sacrifice. Please visit www.archden.org/givetoday or call 303.867.0614. The origins of the Apostles ’ Creed are believed to predate the Nicene Creed. It is universally recognized by many Christians as a shared statement of our faith in God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The Apostles ’ Creed may be used at any Sunday Mass, but the church particularly recommends its use during Lent and Easter Time. Why? Because the words of this ancient Creed have been used for centuries as the basis of our baptismal promises, and the seasons of Lent and Easter put a strong focus on baptism. As we recite the Apostles ’ Creed, may it stir in our hearts our commitment to Christ, which was first made at our own baptisms, and help us to renew our promises throughout the Easter Season.
