Connect your aerial lead to the socket labelled DIGITAL on the rear of 1. the TV.

8 Basic Operation Basic Operation Everyday use This section explains the various functions and operations used during everyday viewing. Most operations can be done using the remote control.

1. Press the On/Off button (labelled !) on the front of the TV to switch

Basic Operation 9 Basic Operation Screen Mode The picture that the TV receives may be in one of several formats (e.g. conventional 4:3 format, 16:9 widescreen format etc.). You can alter the TV screen mode manually to suit the broadcast you are watching*. (Alternatively, set the ‘Auto Format’ menu option to ‘On’. The TV will automatically select the best mode to suit the broadcast. Refer to page 22 for details.)

Due to the range of cinemascopic formats available, black areas may be visible on the TV screen. In ‘Zoom’ mode, parts of the top and bottom of the picture may be cut off. Press the V or v button to adjust the position of the picture on the TV screen (e.g. to read subtitles).

14:9 broadcast viewed in ‘14:9’ mode.

14:9 Use this mode for watching 14:9 broadcasts with the picture displayed in the correct proportions. As a result, black areas are visible on the TV screen. In ‘14:9’ mode, parts of the top and bottom of the picture may be cut off. Press the V or v button to adjust the position of the picture on the TV screen (e.g. to read subtitles).

4:3 Use this mode for watching conventional 4:3 broadcasts (e.g. non widescreen TV) with the picture displayed in the correct proportions. As a result, black areas are visible on the TV screen.

4:3 broadcast viewed in ‘Smart’ mode

Smart This mode creates an imitation widescreen effect for conventional 4:3 broadcasts. The 4:3 picture is stretched to fill the TV screen, eliminating any black areas. In ‘Smart’ mode, parts of the top and bottom of the picture may be cut off. Press the V or v button to adjust the position of the picture on the TV screen (e.g. to read subtitles).

Basic Operation 11 Basic Operation Digital text Some broadcasters now provide a digital text service. Digital text services offer all the familiar information that analogue (conventional) text services provide but with the look and feel of a graphically rich website. An example of digital text. The appearance, content and navigation methods of all digital text services are decided by the broadcaster. Most of the digital text services currently available use simple navigation methods based on the following buttons:

Viewing digital text There are two ways to view digital text, either while watching a digital channel or by accessing a dedicated digital text channel.

a) Digital text from digital channels (depending on availability of service) This form of digital text is accessed the same way as analogue text. 1. Select a digital channel which provides a text service. 2. Press / to access the digital text service. 3. Follow the on screen instructions.

b) Digital text from a dedicated digital text channel (depending on availability of service)

Some broadcasters provide a separate channel for accessing their digital text service. 1. Select a dedicated digital text channel. 2. Follow the on screen instructions.

Fastext Fastext allows you to access pages quickly and easily. When Fastext is available, four coloured items appear at the bottom of the text page. Press the corresponding Coloured button on the remote control to access the page. Page Catching This feature allows you to jump quickly from one page to another. When viewing a page that contains several page numbers (e.g. an index page), press OK. Press V or v to highlight the required page number. Press OK to select. Favourite channels This feature allows you to create a list of your favourite channels. This list is displayed when the ‘Favourite’ category is selected in the Channel Index menu (see above).

Favourite Programme This option allows you to store your favourite channels in a list for quick access.

To add a channel to the Favourite Programme list With the ‘Favourite Programmes’ option highlighted, press the OK button to display the ‘Favourite Programmes’ menu. Press the V or v button to scroll through the list until the channel you wish to store as a favourite is highlighted. Press the OK button to confirm. A tick appears alongside the channel to indicate that it is now stored as a favourite. Repeat this procedure to store other favourite channels.

To remove a channel from the Favourite Programme list Highlight the channel and press the OK button. The tick disappears.

(Alternatively, press the RED or GREEN button to display the previous or next five channels in the list.) Press the OK button to display the ‘Manual Programme Search’ menu. Clearing a channel With the ‘Manual Tuning’ option highlighted, press the OK button to display the ‘Manual Tuning’ menu. Press the V or v button to highlight the channel number you wish to clear. Press the YELLOW button. A message is displayed asking you to confirm. Press the RED button to clear the channel or press the BLUE button to cancel. PIN Code This option allows you to change your PIN code.

With the ‘PIN Code’ option highlighted, press the OK button to display the ‘PIN Code’ menu. Use the Numbered buttons to enter your existing PIN code. Initially the PIN code is preset to 1234. If you enter a wrong number, press the RED button to clear and start again. If you have forgotten your PIN code, please use 9999. This Pin Code will always be accepted. Press the OK button to confirm. Use the Numbered buttons to enter your new PIN code. Press the OK button to confirm. Enter your new PIN again to confirm. Press the OK button to change the PIN. System Information This is an information screen only and displays the current software versions and the signal strength.

AV3 Output This option allows you to set a signal to be output through the socket labelled i3/r3 on the rear of the TV*. For example, to record from a camcorder to a video tape: Connect your camcorder to the 4 sockets (audio) and either the t4 or r4 socket (video or S-Video) on the front of the TV. Connect a VCR to the i3/r3 socket on the rear of the TV. Set the ‘AV3 Output’ option to ‘AV4’ (front sockets). Press ‘PLAY’ on the camcorder. The picture is sent through the i3/r3 socket to the VCR. Change the channel on your VCR until the picture from the camcorder appears. Press ‘RECORD’ on the VCR.

With the ‘AV3 Output’ option highlighted, press b to adjust. Press V or v to select ‘TV’, ‘AV1’, ‘AV2’ or ‘AV4’. Press OK to confirm.

Here are some simple solutions to problems which may affect the picture and sound.
