‘GUT-MADNESS’: GASTRIMARGIA IN PLATO AND BEYOND Judy Stove (University of New South Wales) The classical Greeks’ and Romans’ ethical systems focused heavily on virtues, that is to say, on good human attributes. Human vices, in fact, always received much more thorough treatment from Christian writers than pagan writers gave them. Our very notion of a vice is heavily influenced by Christian views of sin. This should not overshadow the fact that pagan writers dealt, to some extent, with habits or actions which later entered the canon of vices or sins (for example, Aristotle in the work commonly called Virtues and Vices). My topic is gastrimargia: the bad habit which, in Greek, means ‘gut-madness’, and which came to be translated as gula in Latin and gluttony in English. Overeating and its visible outcome, obesity, are receiving, in our society, a high level of attention, both official and individual. Yet, to state the obvious, overeating (like drinking too much alcohol) is not something unprecedented in earlier societies. Perhaps not so obviously, it was a feature even of societies of the distant past, in times which we might think were insufficiently wealthy to allow it. Gastrimargia represented, of course, one of those bodily desires the denial of which was critical to both pagan and Christian virtue. In fact, the very commonness of the habit may have been the reason why it seems to have assumed quite an important role in some ethical discussions. Gastrimargia features in two key dialogues of Plato. The first I want to discuss appears in the Phaedo.It is easy to forget how very ascetic Plato makes Socrates, in this dialogue. -

A50.—GROG BOWL GUIDANCE GROG BOWL OVERVIEW 1. Toilet bowls or similar devices are prohibited for use as grog bowls. 2. Solid items will not be included as grog ingredients. 3. Cadets preparing the grog will drink the first cup (full) while demonstrating the proper reporting procedures to the President of the Mess. 4. The grog must be opened and closed before the guest speaker’s remarks. 5. The grog will be open for a maximum of 15 minutes during the program. The President of the Mess will close the grog by stating “Although violations are rampant, I feel enough have been dealt with and justice has been served. The decorum of the Mess has been restored.” 6. All violations must be in keeping with the rules of the Mess and in good taste. 7. No hazing or punitive actions are allowed as part of the Mess. 8. Guests will not be sent to the grog, instead appropriate cadet hosts will accept the honors in proxy. 9. Sending violators to the grog will be done in rhyme. Then, reread the text and annotate three to five things you notice and three to five things you wonder about. From the Nez Perce National Historic Trail website Food and Drink Fish were an important food for Indian families. They were caught in many different ways. Some tribes made hand-knotted nets, both large and small. Some of the tribes in the Pacific Northwest still fish with large dipnets, from a platform built up above the edge of the riverbank. Others use a seine net (pronounced “sayn”) to catch many fish at once. Some tribes made a fish trap from sticks. Others built dams with rocks, dirt, and fallen trees; they would then scoop the fish from the water with baskets. The Nez Perce and other tribes picked and ate many kinds of wild berries—strawberries, blueberries, wild grapes, huckleberries, serviceberries, currants, cranberries, and many more. Researchers have found there were 36 different kinds of fruit that Indians dried to eat in the winter. They knew what the plants looked like, where they grew, and when they got ripe every year. Berries were carried home in baskets and eaten fresh, but they were also dried and saved for winter. Huckleberries and other berries—such as serviceberries and currants—were often used by the Nez Perce to make a staple food called pemmican. Meat is sliced very thin, then dried, and then pounded or ground with stones to a dry powder. Chopped dried berries are added to the powdered meat, and then melted fat (such as deer fat or buffalo fat) is mixed in. -

Below are some tips to help you choose your meals wisely when away from home. Eating at Fast Food Chains 1. Select grilled, charbroiled, or roasted sandwiches, but make sure to remove the skin. 2. Order lettuce, tomato, onion, mustard, ketchup, relish, or salsa on your sandwich and hold the mayo, oils, and cheese. 3. Avoid ordering the meal combo – it’s usually more than you need! 4. Go for the grilled chicken salads, but ask for low-fat dressing such as vinaigrette on the side. 5. Order a regular hamburger instead of a jumbo or multiple stacked burgers. 6. Skip the sugary sodas, and instead go for skim/low-fat milk, water, or 100% fruit juice. 7. Choose the small yogurt parfait instead of the milkshake or ice cream sundae. 8. Special order your meals! Most establishments will make your meals made to order! 9. Order the 6 inch sub and skip the oil and mayo and double up on the meat and add extra veggies! 10. Select a baked potato instead of French fries and dress it up with salsa, veggies, low-fat butter substitute or low-fat sour cream! 11. Avoid any items that are breaded, fried, have a “secret sauce”, or have multiple layers. These usually have an outrageous amount of fat, cholesterol, and sodium! 12. Know what you are eating- look at the online nutritional information for each fast food restaurant. Eating at Restaurants 1. Do your research ahead of time. -

Hardiman 2005 ABSTRACT This dissertation marks the first synthetic and contextual analysis of domestic sculpture for the whole of the Hellenistic period (323 BCE – 31 BCE). Prior to this study, Hellenistic domestic sculpture had been examined from a broadly literary perspective or had been the focus of smaller regional or site-specific studies. Rather than taking any one approach, this dissertation examines both the literary testimonia and the material record in order to develop as full a picture as possible for the location, function and meaning(s) of these pieces. The study begins with a reconsideration of the literary evidence. The testimonia deal chiefly with the residences of the Hellenistic kings and their conspicuous displays of wealth in the most public rooms in the home, namely courtyards and dining rooms. Following this, the material evidence from the Greek mainland and Asia Minor is considered. The general evidence supports the literary testimonia’s location for these sculptures. In addition, several individual examples offer insights into the sophistication of domestic decorative programs among the Greeks, something usually associated with the Romans. -

The present study was carried out to evaluate the antimicrobial effect of plants from the same species as Brassica oleceracea namely, white cabbage and red cabbage. The preliminary phytochemical analysis was tested by using a different extract of these plants for the presence of various secondary metabolites like alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, terpenoids, glycosides, steroids, carbohydrates, and amino acids. The in vitro antimicrobial activity was screened against clinical isolates viz gram positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, gram negative bacteria Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa. They did not come to the colonies by their own choice. They were slaves, captured in their native land (Africa) and brought across the ocean to a very different place than what they knew at home. Often, slaves worked as cooks in the homes of their owners. The food they had prepared and eaten in Africa was different from food eaten by most colonists. But, many of the things that Africans were used to eating at home quickly became a part of what American colonists ate in their homes. Many of those foods are what we call “soul food,” and foods are still part of our diverse American culture today. Food From Africa: Most of the slaves who came to Maryland and Virginia came from the West Coast of Africa. Ghana, Gambia, Nigeria, Togo, Mali, Sierra Leone, Benin, Senegal, Guinea, the Ivory Coast are the countries of West Africa. Foods consumed in the Western part of Africa were (and still are) very starchy, like rice and yams. Rice grew well on the western coast of Africa because of frequent rain. Rice actually grows in water. Other important foods were cassava (a root vegetable similar to a potato), plantains (which look like bananas but are not as sweet) and a wide assortment of beans.
