Completely unrealistic, he had clear connections to the victims, living witnesses who had met and been tricked by 'Tobias' which he never had to answer for. A really appalling ending. His character is so uneven, the author never really touches on why he wants to play a part in killing these woman, in one sentence he's appalled at the thought of them being tortured and killed but the next he's helping to pick a new victim. I get its meant to be 'for' his Millicent and because of his relationship with her, but I never felt like it was explained or gone into in enough detail to ever feel believable. Ok, first off this book is about a husband and Novel About My Wife who decide that murdering women is somehow a turn on and keeps their marriage fun and sexy. Which on it's own is enough to make me not want to recommend this book because that really skeeved me out Novel About My Wife the fact that there are no explicit sex scenes or murder scenes in this book. But how did this couple, who have two teenage children no less, get Novel About My Wife this sick crime? There's a really long uninteresting backstory so in summary: basically Millicent the 'lovely wife' from the book title manages to get her husband 'TSFP' which stands for That Stupid Fucking Psycho, because this book never Novel About My Wife him a name to kill her sister Holly which is also my name; RIP Holly, you didn't deserve all of that in the name of defending Millicent. They cover up the sort of accidental murder because TSFP killed her with a tennis racket and she was unarmed and hadn't hurt anyone yet so he was totally going to get jail time for that. Novel About My Wife, some work friend of Holly's puts two Novel About My Wife two together and tries to blackmail TSFP and Millicent into paying her to keep quiet. But now that they each have a murder under their belts, all of a sudden murdering seems really sexy. So that's when things go from weird to really stupid. Novel About My Wife and Millicent pick out a woman to kill, who happens to like to hike. He apparently never asks any details about what Millicent ended up doing exactly with the murdering and burying. A year later they both decide to get their murder on again and TSFP goes out trolling for potential victims, disguising himself as a deaf man named Tobias. He sleeps with one woman, but decides she shouldn't be murdered and then after rejecting another potential murder victim, he finally settles on a woman for them to murder together. But before they go through with Novel About My Wife new murder plan, the body of the hiker is discovered and makes the news because even though she had been missing for a year, she was only dead for a couple of days. TSFP confronts Millicent about why she has been keeping this woman alive and torturing her for a year without his knowledge and she reveals that it's part of her grand plan to pin the murder on a previous local serial killer who got away - Owen I think, I listened to the audiobook and I can't be bothered to confirm that, so let's call him Owen either way. Then there was a lot of meandering story later, that mostly involves TSFP being really worried about both his children for various reasons and maybe that was supposed to make us feel sympathetic towards him but I was just bored instead. So fast forwarding past that, TSFP discovers that Millicent is setting him up to take the whole blame for the hiker and their latest murder victim, plus some other women that he didn't even know Millicent had killed. Novel About My Wife that should just not happen and how can he leave his children to be raised by this murdering psycho?! Insert WTF face here at this logic So TSFP runs and Novel About My Wife but stays in town so he can try to find some way to 'prove' his quasi innocence or at the very least Novel About My Wife his wife's guilt. His wife is waiting for him like some cartoon super villain and conveniently implicates her role in the murders while their daughter was, unbeknownst to either of them, listening on. Daughter confronts Millicent. Son shows up. Epilogue shows that the three of them move somewhere else and ends with TSFP flirting with another woman while again pretending to be someone else who is deaf. The End. Why this book is even more stupid than it already sounds - Why is TSFP ok with his children being raised by murderers when he was involved, but not when his murdering wife blames everything on Novel About My Wife Yeah, ok. They weren't even that close of friends. Also, TSFP finds a bottle of eye drops 'hidden' in the pantry but Millicent is allergic to them so it couldn't be for her so why are they in the house? While TSFP is in hiding, he concludes that Millicent is poisoning their daughter by adding the eye drops to her food to make her feel sick, for no clear reason that was ever given anywhere in this Novel About My Wife. Like, what?!?! Why would she not just assume both of her parents are crazy and run away with her brother and let the police handle it? That is the evidence Novel About My Wife exonerates him, because somehow that means everyone assumes all the Novel About My Wife must be planted? And no one wonders why the woman who he had sex with and did not murder identified him as Tobias and 'Tobias' was scrawled into the wall by a victim? He's just found innocent. Oh and Millicent's death was self defense. Novel About My Wife | Fiction | The Guardian It concerns an unnamed young woman who impetuously marries Novel About My Wife wealthy widower, only to discover that he and his household are haunted by the memory of his late first wife, the title character.

  • Sleeping with Herodotus in the English Patient
Sleeping with Herodotus in The English Patient VERNON PROVENCAL But we were interested in how our lives could mean something to the past. … We all slept with Herodotus. (Ondaatje, English 142) 1. HE AMBIVALENCE1 OF HERODOTUS as the “Father of History” in The English Patient lies at the heart of its enigmatic narrative, which foregrounds what might be best described as Michael T 2 Ondaatje’s sense of the “choreography of history.” Linda Hutcheon has usefully characterized Ondaatje’s earlier work as creating what we might call a “historiographic” referent. Unlike the historical (or real) referent, this one is created in and by the text’s writing (hence, historiographic). The referent here is doubled; it par- takes of two “realities.” … History, like narrative, becomes therefore a process, not a product. … Here the processes of recording and nar- rating history becomes part of the text itself. (Canadian 86) So characterized, Ondaatje’s narratological view of history places him in the proximity of postcolonial/postmodern historicism that treats “history” as “text” (White, Said, Iggers, Himmelfarb). In his novels, the “textual nar- rative” of history is often fictively reconfigured, as though the relation- ships between historical events were a matter of mere (Foucauldian?) propinquity,3 Ondaatje’s artistic freedom to reconfigure historical associa- tions as more or less accidental or fatal expresses what I perceive to be his sense of the “choreography of history.” Admittedly, then, The English Patient presents us with a postcolo- nial/postmodern criticism of The Histories, such as that described by Mark Simpson, as “narrating the key yet inadmissible significance of his- torical invention and narrative instability in traditions of Western epis- temology” (221).
