In the arias and scenes that follow, we witness characters in just this kind of moment; searching for meaningful contact yet being somehow barred from achieving it. Through circumstance, distance, convention, misunderstanding, pride, fear, ego, or what have you, we may find ourselves in situations similar to the characters in this program, while looking forward to the days when connection can be more easily achieved and separation the exception to the rule. -

Eugenio Maria de Hostos Community College / CUNY Humanities Department Visual & Performing Arts Unit Academic Program Review Fall 2016 Second Draft Academic Program Mission Statement The Visual & Performing Arts Unit fosters and maintains the history and practice of all aspects of artistic endeavor in the College and the community. Through its curriculum, members of the College community and other members of the urban community explore, interpret, and apply the artistic practices that lead to a better understanding of themselves, their environment, and their roles in society. Description of the Unit The VPA Unit is the largest unit of the Humanities Department. It serves approximately 1,125 students from all majors at Hostos every semester. With courses as far ranging as painting and drawing, art history, public speaking, acting, music, and photography, students can pursue many possible creative paths. Those who elect to earn credits in the visual and performing arts will find a variety of approaches to learning that include lecture and studio based classes as well as workshops that allow for the exploration of extracurricular interests or even for the development of career centered skill sets vital to the pursuit of employment opportunities. The successful completion of courses in the arts are a useful and, in many cases, essential basis for study in other disciplines. They are also a valuable source for personal development. Students interested in planning a concentration in the visual and performing arts are advised to consult with the Visual and Performing Arts Coordinator. The Media Design Programs were originally housed in the VPA Unit, but operate as a separate unit due to the considerable growth of students and courses. -

Verdi’s Rigoletto - A discographical conspectus by Ralph Moore It is hard if not impossible, to make a representative survey of recordings of Rigoletto, given that there are 200 in the catalogue; I can only compromise by compiling a somewhat arbitrary list comprising of a selection of the best-known and those which appeal to me. For a start, there are thirty or so studio recordings in Italian; I begin with one made in 1927 and 1930, as those made earlier than that are really only for the specialist. I then consider eighteen of the studio versions made since that one. I have not reviewed minor recordings or those which in my estimation do not reach the requisite standard; I freely admit that I cannot countenance those by Sinopoli in 1984, Chailly in 1988, Rahbari in 1991 or Rizzi in 1993 for a combination of reasons, including an aversion to certain singers – for example Gruberova’s shrill squeak of a soprano and what I hear as the bleat in Bruson’s baritone and the forced wobble in Nucci’s – and the existence of a better, earlier version by the same artists (as with the Rudel recording with Milnes, Kraus and Sills caught too late) or lacklustre singing in general from artists of insufficient calibre (Rahbari and Rizzi). Nor can I endorse Dmitri Hvorostovsky’s final recording; whether it was as a result of his sad, terminal illness or the vocal decline which had already set in I cannot say, but it does the memory of him in his prime no favours and he is in any case indifferently partnered. -

Her clear soprano voice and lively spirit made her one of the most famous performers in the world of opera. Sills worked hard to make opera an art form that the general public could enjoy. She spent the later part of her career as a strong cultural leader for three major performing arts centers in New York City. (MUSIC) STEVE EMBER: That was Beverly Sills performing a song from the opera “The Tales of Hoffman” by the French composer Jacques Offenbach. Sills is singing the role of Olympia, a female robot who keeps breaking down while singing a series of high notes. This difficult aria gives a good example of the sweet and expressive voice that made Beverly Sills famous. 2 AP The Brooklyn-born opera diva was a global icon of can-do American culture with her dazzling voice and bubbly personality BARBARA KLEIN: Beverly Sills was born Belle Silverman in nineteen twenty-nine. Her family lived in the Crown Heights area of Brooklyn, New York. Her father, Morris, came from Romania and her mother, Shirley, was Russian. Sills said that her father believed that a person could live the real American dream only with an educated mind. -
Merriweather Post Pavilion
Citizen Advisory Panel on Merriweather Post Pavilion Final Report Introduction On August 12, 2004, County Executive Jim Robey signed Executive Order No. 2004-03 (attached as Appendix 1), which appointed 16 leaders of the business and arts communities in Howard County to serve on the Merriweather Citizens Advisory Panel (the Panel). He asked the Panel to advise him on whether Howard County (the County) should purchase Merriweather Post Pavilion from The Rouse Company (now General Growth Properties (GGP)), which had announced that Merriweather was for sale provided that the purchaser agrees to meet certain provisions. He asked the Panel to answer five questions: 1. Is there a public service purpose for Howard County to purchase Merriweather Post Pavilion? 2. If there is a public service purpose for the County to purchase Merriweather, what should be the primary purpose of the facility (e.g., a concert venue, an all-purpose arts facility, etc.), what other activities should be permitted and what organizations should have access? 3. Does Merriweather need to be renovated, and if so what type and scope of renovation would be necessary for it to most successfully and effectively achieve the determined primary purpose? 4. What type of management and control structure should be put into place for the operation of this facility? 5. What level of public oversight should exist? In addition, the County solicited proposals for consultant services for a “Feasibility study associated with the possible purchase and renovation of Merriweather Post Pavilion.” The County received five proposals it deemed to be acceptable. Following interviews with the firms that submitted those proposals, the County hired the team of Ziger/Snead LLP Architects, Webb Management Services, Inc. -

PROGRAM: (subject to change) PART I Etudes 1 & 2 (1994) Composed and Performed by Philip Glass π There were a number of special events and commissions that facilitated the composition of The Etudes by Philip Glass. The original set of six was composed for Dennis Russell Davies on the occasion of his 50th birthday in 1994. Chaconnes I & II from Partita for Solo Violin (2011) Composed by Philip Glass Performed by Tim Fain π I met Tim Fain during the tour of “The Book of Longing,” an evening based on the poetry of Leonard Cohen. In that work, all of the instrumentalists had solo parts. Shortly after that tour, Tim asked me to compose some solo violin music for him. I quickly agreed. Having been very impressed by his ability and interpretation of my work, I decided on a seven-movement piece. I thought of it as a Partita, the name inspired by the solo clavier and solo violin music of Bach. The music of that time included dance-like movements, often a chaconne, which represented the compositional practice. What inspired me about these pieces was that they allowed the composer to present a variety of music composed within an overall structure.
