LIST of COMMISSIONS This List Of LIST OF COMMISSIONS This list of Lanning Roper's gardens is compiled ENGLAND FARLEY HALL*, Farley Hill, near Reading from surviving correspondence (the Lanning (for Hon. Mrs Peter Samuel) - Roper Papers, now in the Royal Horticultural BEDFORDSHIRE Garden design and continuing planting advice, 1975 Society's Lindley Library) and with additional HOWARD'S HOUSE, Cardington 82 information from the memories of his clients and (for Humphrey Whitbread Esq.) friends. Garden design in 1969 and 1982 ENGLEFIELD HOUSE*, near Reading The list requires a word of explanation. The (for Mrs W.R. Beynon) names in brackets after the name of the house BERKSHIRE Garden and planting advice, 1975-80 indicate Lanning's clients, though in many cases they are no longer the owners. The words 'garden BAGNOR MANOR, Newbury WICKHAM HOUSE*, Newbury (for design' and 'planting design' are self-explanatory (for Billy Wallace Esq.) General H.S. Hashim) Garden and are used to indicate a short-term commission. Garden design including riverside lawn, terrace, design, 1976-7 Lanning's preferred way of working was to tend flower borders and swimming pool surround, 'his gardens' over a period of years, and I have with the architect John Griffin, 1960-1 CL RIDGE HOUSE, West Drive, Sunningdale adopted the word 'advice' to describe this. 'Garden (see Chapter 4) (Kenneth Wagg Esq.) advice' means that he oversaw a substantial Garden advice, especially 0n siting of pool and rearrangement of the garden, or part of it; 'planting THE OLD VICARAGE*, Bucklebury (for Sir tennis court, 1974-81 advice' means that he mainly adjusted and carried Robert and Lady Sainsbury) Garden design, out progressive changes in planting only. In the including setting for Henry Moore sculptures, THE MANOR HOUSE*, Yattendon places where he was mainly the planting and continuing planting advice, 1962-74 (for Lord and Lady Iliffe) consultant I have named the architect or other CL (see Chapter 4) Garden advice, 1977-81 designer who may have been involved. But the situations were infinitely variable, as my book MILTON HILL HOUSE*, near Abingdon explains, and this list can only give a brief guide, LITTLE BEAR*, Pangbourne (for W.H. Smith & Son) though it does help in assessing his work. An (for Mr and Mrs C.B. Goulandris) Garden and planting design, 1978-81 asterisk * beside the name of the garden indicates Garden design and continuing planting advice, that there is a file of correspondence in the Lindley 1965-82 YATTENDON PARK*, Yattendon Library; CL indicates that Lanning wrote an article (see also London: 37 Chesham Place) Brief planting advice, 1979-80 in Country Life about the garden, and these can be found by referring to the published index of names THE OLD MILL, Woodspeen (for Jean, AVINGTON MANOR*, Hungerford of houses and gardens; n.d. indicates that the date Lady Ashcombe) Garden design, 1964-6 (Lord and Lady Howard de Walden) of the work is unknown. • THE GLAVEN RIVER CATCHMENT Links Between Geodiversity and Landscape
THE GLAVEN RIVER CATCHMENT Links between geodiversity and landscape - A resource for educational and outreach work - Tim Holt-Wilson Norfolk Geodiversity Partnership CONTENTS 1.0 Introduction 2.0 Landscape Portrait 3.0 Features to visit 4.0 Local Details 5.0 Resources 1.0 INTRODUCTION The River Glaven is partly a chalk river, of which there are more in England than any other country in the world. Chalk rivers are fed from groundwater sources in chalk bedrock, producing clear waters. Many of them have ‘winterbourne’ stretches in their headwaters, with intermittent or absent flow in summer. They have characteristic plant communities, and their gravelly beds, clear waters and rich invertebrate life support important populations of brown trout, salmon and other fish. The Stiffkey is a notable example of a chalk river in north Norfolk, and is classified as one between Edgefield Bridge (TG085363) and Glandford Bridge (TG045415). This report explains the links between geodiversity and the biological and cultural character of the river catchment. It provides a digest of information for education and interpretive outreach about this precious natural resource. Some specialist words are marked in blue and appear in the Glossary (section 5). 2.0 LANDSCAPE PORTRAIT 2.1 Topography and geology The River Glaven is a river in north Norfolk with a length of 17 km (11 miles). Its catchment drains an area of some 115 sq km, with its headwaters in the uplands of the Cromer Ridge. It is fed by several tributaries, including the Thornage Beck and Water Lane Beck, among other spring-fed sources; there are no tributaries in the lower reaches where it flows directly over chalk bedrock.

Hatfield House Archives PAPERS OF Elizabeth, 5th Marchioness of Salisbury - file list *Please note that the numbering of these papers is not final* Ref: 5MCH The collection comprises 12 boxes. Boxes 1-8 contain letters in bundles and each bundle has been treated as a file. Except bundle 1 (where the letters were numbered by Betty), letters in Box 1 and Box 2 bundle 1 have been numbered consecutively according to their original bundle e.g. letters in bundle 2 are numbered 2/1 – 57. These bundles were also divided into packets so that they could be foldered. This level of processing and repackaging could not be maintained in the time available for the project so from Box 2 bundle 2 onwards the original bundles have been retained with the total number of letters in each bundle being recorded. Letters are usually annotated with correspondent’s name and date of receipt by Betty, these names/nicknames have been used in the file lists to facilitate locating letters within the bundles. Full names and titles of significant correspondents are given in Appendix A. Unidentified correspondents are listed first for each bundle with additional information that may help to identify them later. Correspondents are listed once for each bundle containing their letter/letters. Box 1a, Box 1b Bundle 6, Box 3 Bundle 12-Box 8 Bundle 14 are listed alphabetically by surname but names have not been reversed Box 1b Bundle 7 & 8, Box 2 Bundle 1-Box 3 Bundle 11 are listed alphabetically by first name or title where no first name is given Box1b Bundles 9-11 and Box 2 Bundle2/1-20 only contain letters from “Bobbety”, Robert Gascoyne-Cecil Boxes 9 & 10 contain personal papers and ephemera which have been listed individually.
