AUGUST 3, 2018 EW.COM 45 TV Super Women CW stars Caity Lotz and Candice Patton are looking to empower women through their new global initiative, Shethority. BY SAMANTHA HIGHFILL

ON SCREEN, DC’S LEGENDS OF Tomorrow’s Caity Lotz and The Flash’s Candice Patton help save the world on a weekly basis, battling metahumans, aliens, and even the occasional demon. But of screen, the actors are focused on a difer- ent battle: combating the notion that women should see one another as competition. “Society has pitted women against each other,” Lotz says. “There’s always this feeling of ‘There’s only one seat at the table, and if you want it, you better tear that other girl down.’ But if we want to reach equality, we have to lift each other up.” In order to do that, Lotz and Patton founded Shethority, a digital space where women can come together and, quite simply, talk. The idea was solidified during the filming of the 2016 Arrowverse crossover event, which brought together char- acters from four CW superhero shows—Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow, The Flash, and Supergirl. © 2018 Novartis 5/18 US-DTM-18-E-0924 TV BAD-DERCALLSAUL Breaking Bad prequel Better Call Saul returns for season 4 (premiering Aug. 6 at 9 p.m.), and as the two worlds start to merge, new sides of Bob Odenkirk’s Jimmy McGill emerge. BY DAN SNIERSON

IT’S MONDAY MORNING IN ALBUQUERQUE, AND Bob Odenkirk and Rhea Seehorn are playing Jimmy McGill and Kim Wexler, who are playing a dopey brother–frazzled sister team, who are playing an employee in a local-government office: Their elaborate ruse involves crutches, a leaking container of breast milk, and stealth document swap- ping. “It’s the classic breast-milk con,” deadpans Odenkirk during a break. “It’s been done for so long—since they discov- ered breast milk.” “Same as the shell game, really,” adds Seehorn. Surveying the shady scene, co-creator Vince Gilligan coyly offers: “It’s one small slip for Jimmy, one big one for Kim.” The next day, the scheming has been replaced by screaming. Jimmy leaps out of his beat-up Esteem on a parking-garage roof and drops some life-altering news on Kim. When Kim’s reaction falls short of expecta- tions, he lashes out, and things are said by both that may forever change this intrigu- ing, important, and ill-defined relationship. “If they’re on a roller-coaster ride this sea- son, this is that last terrifying drop,” teases Gilligan. “You’re not sure if the wheels are going to come off or not.” As you see, each day of Better Call Saul’s fourth season brings a different vibe—and the audience a step closer to the troubling transformation of Slippin’ Jimmy into snaky, oily lawyer Saul Goodman. A transfixing character study mixing melancholy, mis- chief, and malevolence, AMC’s Breaking Bad prequel has formulated its own identity, as evidenced by 23 Emmy nominations. And now, as exacting restaurateur/drug kingpin Gus (Giancarlo Esposito) eyes more cartel Bob Odenkirk photographed exclusively for EW by Dan Winters on April 14, 2018, in Los Angeles power and further aligns with world-weary

It’s going to swallow us—and that’s okay with me.” The question of when and how Saul will swallow Jimmy looms larger, especially after he learns that his disapproving brother Chuck (Michael McKean) has self- immolated. In the season 3 finale, Chuck leveled his sibling by saying that Jimmy never mattered to him—and that he should embrace his destiny as a delinquent. “I think those words turn the whole series,” opines Odenkirk, who dreads Jimmy’s inev- itable transformation: “It’s hard for me when he’s Saul—and that’s what he’s becoming. I’ve enjoyed the fact that Jimmy has a conscience.” According to Gould, kill- ing Chuck was the hardest decision that the writers made in the first three seasons (though he’ll return in flashbacks), and Jimmy’s reaction “was maybe the most dif- ficult thing we had to figure out this season,” (Fromtop)Rhea Seehorn and Bob Odenkirk; Giancarlo Esposito and Jonathan Banks he says. “The moments when the characters surprise us are the moments I treasure, and like she loved Jimmy despite him being a con.” plans.” Esposito warns ominously: “Macho Jimmy rocked me this year.” Elsewhere, Mike isn’t content cashing a Nacho doesn’t really realize how dangerous To that end, don’t expect Jimmy to softly paycheck as a Madrigal security consultant Gus is—and he is going to find out.” commune with his grief. “A massive com- in name only. “He takes that very seriously,” Danger lurks not just in the past, but the partmentalization goes on in his heart and hints Banks.
