TAKING POP-UPS SERIOUSLY: THE JURISPRUDENCE OF THE INFIELD FLY RULE NEIL B. COHEN* SPENCER WEBER WALLER** In 1975, the University of Pennsylvania published a remarkable item. Rather than being deemed an article, note, or comment, it was classified as an "Aside." The item was of course, The Common Law Origins of the Infield Fly Rule.' This piece of legal scholarship was remarkable in numerous ways. First, it was published anonymously and the author's identity was not known publicly for decades. 2 Second, it was genuinely funny, perhaps one of the funniest pieces of true scholarship in a field dominated mostly by turgid prose and ineffective attempts at humor by way of cutesy titles or bad puns. Third, it was short and to the point' in a field in which a reader new to law reviews would assume that authors are paid by the word or footnote. Fourth, the article was learned and actually about something-how baseball's infield fly rule4 is consistent with, and an example of, the common law processes of rule creation and legal reasoning in the Anglo-American tradition.

Charlie Manuel has become part of their group. When the Phillies beat the Colorado Rockies at the end of July, Manuel became the fourth manager in Phillies history to lead the club to 500 wins. In so doing, Manuel joined Gene Mauch (646 wins), Harry Wright (636), and Danny Ozark (594) as Phillies skippers who have won 500 or more games. Manuel achieved his lofty status faster than the other three. He did it midway through his sixth season, just 16 days before Ozark won his 500th. Mauch, the Phillies' skipper from 1960-68, reached the milestone in his seventh season, while Wright (1884-93), managing in seasons when the schedules were considerably shorter, took nine years to get there. Now 66 and the oldest manager in team history, Manuel has led the Phillies to levels none of the other three ever did. His Phillies have gone to the World Series twice, and he is the only manager whose teams have posted 85 or more wins five straight years.

Fans choose the starting lineups; and a combination of players, coaches, and managers choose the rest of the players on the All-Star rosters. The game is played every year, usually on the second or third Tuesday in July. The very first All-Star Game was on July 6, 1933, at the home of the Chicago White Sox. Only two times since then has the game not been played — in 1945 due to World War II travel restrictions, and 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. Nationals Park and Washington, DC were at the center of the baseball universe in July 2018, serving as host of the 89th Major League Baseball All-Star Game. Remember all those festivities? This may come as a surprise, but that was actually the fifth time the All-Star Game was played in DC. Here is a little bit about each of the All-Star Games played in the Nation’s Capital. JULY 7, 1937 The 1937 Midsummer Classic, which was the fifth Major League Baseball All-Star Game, was played on July 7, at Griffith Stadium. President Franklin D. Roosevelt was in attendance, making this the first All-Star Game to be played in front of a current President. The American League won the game 8-3, improving to 4 wins and 1 loss in the five games.

In 74 big league at bats, Weiser hits only .162 with 12 hits, including three doubles with nine RBIs and two stolen bases. I would get the new card set each year and attempt to play the in-progress season by moving the traded players around and turning ‘nameless player cards” into that year’s key rookies. I switched to APBA in the late ‘70’s because they started releasing some complete old season sets and the idea of playing with those really caught my fancy. Between then and the mid-nineties, I collected a lot of card sets.

MY EIGHTY-TWO YEAR LOVE AFFAIR WITH FENWAY PARK About the Author Larry Ruttman Author, Historian, Attorney Larry Ruttman, a longtime attorney and author, has won awards for biographical cultural histories about his famous hometown of Brookline, Massachusetts, Voices of Brookline (2005), and Jews on and off the field in Major League Baseball, American Jews and America’s Game: Voices of a Growing Legacy in Baseball (2013), which was chosen the best baseball book in America for 2013 by Sports Collectors Digest. He is currently writing on his lifelong passion for classical music and its musicians, tentatively titled, 5 LARRY RUTTMAN Voices of Virtuosi: Musicians Reveal Their Musical Minds. Educated at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and Boston College Law School, he served as an intelligence officer in the United States Air Force in the Korean War. He was elected a Fellow of the Massachusetts Historical Society. His papers on his two books have been collected by the New England Genealogical Society in collaboration with the American Jewish Historical Society, and collated, digitized, formatted, indexed, and published online.
