- Vision Statement: Operation Smile dreams of a world where no child suffers from lack of access to safe surgery. - Boilerplate: About Operation Smile Operation Smile, headquartered in Virginia Beach, Virginia, is an international medical charity with a presence in more than 60 countries, whose global network of thousands of credentialed medical volunteers from more than 80 countries is dedicated to helping improve the health and lives of children. Since its founding in 1982, Operation Smile has provided more than 220,000 free surgical procedures for children and young adults born with cleft lip, cleft palate and other facial deformities. To build long-term sufficiency in resource-poor environments, Operation Smile trains doctors and local medical professionals in its partner countries so they are empowered to treat their local communities. Operation Smile also donates medical equipment and supplies and provides year-round medical treatments through its worldwide centers.

History

- Operation Smile was founded in 1982 by Dr. William Magee Jr., a plastic surgeon, and his wife, Kathleen Magee, a nurse and clinical social worker. - Operation Smile was launched with its first mission to the in 1982.

Urgent Need

- Every 3 minutes, a child is born with a cleft lip and/or cleft palate. - Children with cleft conditions may suffer from torments, malnourishment and difficulty with speech. - It takes as few as/as little as 45 minutes to repair a cleft lip and/or cleft palate. - It is estimated that two billion people, or one-quarter of the world’s population, lack access to basic surgical care. Billions more lack access to safe and well-timed surgery. - Only 4% of an estimated 234 million surgical procedures performed each year go to the poorest third of the global population.

FY 2014 Statistics (July 1, 2013 - June 30, 2014)

- Operation Smile volunteers provided 19,415 surgical procedures to 16,626 patients. - Operation Smile conducted 174 medical mission programs. - Medical missions were conducted in 124 sites across 34 countries. This included 27 new sites and three countries: Bhutan, Mongolia and Mozambique. - Operation Smile currently has 36 centers in 20 countries that offer ongoing care to patients. - 4,251 medical professionals from 61 countries volunteered more than 335,000 hours with Operation Smile to provide free care to patients. The estimated value of time contributed by medical volunteers totals more than $26 million USD. - Operation Smile packed and shipped 436 pallets of cargo valued at more than $6 million USD for 40 international medical missions. - 71% of medical professionals who volunteered with Operation Smile were from low- and middle-income countries. 93% of medical volunteers said their involvement with Operation Smile provided them with a unique education experience, which helps them strengthen surgical capacity in their local communities.
