SOUTH HOUSE WEEKLY Keep up-to-date with the latest South House happenings! GREETINGS FROM PROFESSOR CRAIG

Dear South House Community,

I hope this note finds you well, all things considered. It is hard to believe that we are now officially on the down slope of the term. I don’t know about you, but for me time is moving at once slowly and quickly. (And, if you want to ponder these questions, listen to the Conversation & Connection episode on TIME.) Speaking of time, this week my husband celebrated a big birthday: 50! Although I’d initially planned a surprise party at one of the Dartmouth cabins, that was, of course, no longer an option. Instead, as many are doing these days to mark important life moments and rites of passage, from births and weddings to funerals and memorial services, I turned to the Zoomiverse. We had a virtual toast and a shared screen slide show with people we love from New Zealand and Germany, New Delhi and Vancouver, Santa Barbara and Boulder, and many places in between. It was actually a beautiful thing to be reminded of these webs of connection that we have spun over 25 yea rs together and 50 years of my partner’s life. Although it was completely different than what an IRL gathering would have been like, it was still an act of beauty and love.

Be well, stay well, be in touch, Sienna

WORDS OF THE WEEK "i am running into a new year" This week’s words come from by Lucille Clifton Uyen Dang, '21 i am running into a new year Clifton’s poem was a gentle insistence on and the old years blow back hope. There’s so much we thought this like a wind year to be. But it’s okay to rewrite the that i catch in my hair script—to author a new, and maybe radically different, story. Even with all of like strong fingers like its disorienting uncertainty, this time can all my old promises and also be a time to notice the daily small it will be hard to let go triumphs and wellsprings of joy, to tend of what i said to myself about myself to your lovely inner world. Perhaps what when i was sixteen and emerges from ‘the now’ might just be an ability to point out things that were twentysix and thirtysix already there—to use them as anchors of even thirtysix but clarity as we make our way through this i am running into a new year unfolding and wild narrative. and i beg what i love and i leave to forgive me M A Y 4 , 2 0 2 0 S P R I N G 2 0 2 0 , W E E K 6
