Although more muted than in some of the preceding ten, Nature Girl’s barely concealed subtext expresses Hiaasen’s outraged concern over the diminishing natural environment in his home state. Hiaasen’s chosen form, the popular crime novel, has enabled him to reach a wide audience with his ecological message. Working within the generic confines of the crime novel, however, produces a number of intriguing challenges to Hiaasen’s radical tendencies. -

KIRSTEN HINES 3109 Grand Ave #619, Coconut Grove, FL 33133 (786) 368-7848 [email protected] www.KirstenNatureTravel.com ARTIST STATEMENT I have always been inspired by nature. The plants and animals in my childhood yard in the Philippines hosted many an adventure, and led me to a master’s degree in biology. But somehow important issues, stories and even the wildlife I so adored lost their magic when defined by columns of scientific numbers. I now strive to convey environmental issues and stories through my writing and photography, without sacrificing the magic. I seek to provide an intimate perspective on nature in South Florida and from around the world, reflecting wildlife, their behaviors, and habitats both in an unaltered documentary-style and in a more interpretive abstract style achieved in-camera to convey the emotional experience. I minimize post-processing and avoid digital manipulation both in an attempt to stay as true to the moment as possible and because nature is impressive without human intervention. With my photography and writing, I aim to lure viewers more deeply into the natural world than they might venture on their own. I aim to reflect nature. Wilderness Character Narrative EVER Foundation Document
Foundation Document Appendix C: Basics for Wilderness Stewardship This wilderness character narrative qualitatively describes what is unique and special about the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Wilderness in terms of the fve qualities of wilderness character. It is a foundational document intended to convey the current and foreseeable future condition of the wilderness, identify fundamental wilderness resources, and acknowledge important intangible values associated with the wilderness. Introduction A wilderness character narrative is intended to be a qualitative description and positive afrmation of the unique attributes of a wilderness area. Representatives from each of the four wilderness managing agencies developed a national framework to monitor wilderness character using fve qualities: untrammeled, natural, undeveloped, opportunities for solitude or primitive and unconfned recreation, and other features of value. These qualities are defned in brief as follows: · Untrammeled. Wilderness is essentially unhindered and free from modern human control or manipulation. · Natural. Wilderness maintains ecological systems that are substantially free from the efects of modern civilization. · Undeveloped. Wilderness retains its primeval character and infuence, and is essentially without permanent improvements or modern human occupation. · Solitude or Primitive and Unconfned Recreation. Wilderness provides outstanding opportunities for solitude or a primitive and unconfned type of recreation. · Other Features of Value. Other tangible features of scientifc, educational, scenic, or historical value. The following wilderness character narrative is intended to familiarize readers with the tangible and intangible resources and values that combine to create the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Wilderness at Everglades National Park. The document was created through collaboration among NPS staf and is a record of the shared understanding of wilderness character exemplifed by the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Wilderness. -

Review: This is a great read, perhaps less speckled with Hiaasens brilliant humor than his other works, but with a far more poignant message. To say more would give away the story. Having read all his novels at least twice, I think this one may contain the most important statement. Very highly recommended....
