Dear Copley High School Families,

The end of the first grading quarter is November 6. I encourage parents and guardians to check their students’ grades in Progress Book and contact teachers through email and/or phone. We will do all we can to help our students be successful. We have many interventions available to students to aid them in their academics.

Teachers are available to students before school, after school, and at times during study halls. Students needing extra support should schedule times with their teachers for conferencing and tutoring. Study tables are available to students during study halls and after school. Many students are mandated to attend these through the athletic department. Mrs. Gracen monitors the study tables. Her specialty is math, but she will provide assistance to students in all areas. We have many teachers available for private tutoring as well. You can contact the high school or board office for details.

Many of our seniors have Senior Option. This means that they have a late arrival or early dismissal to or from school. These students’ grades will be reviewed at the end of the grading period. Students that are not academically successful, or that are struggling with attendance will lose the privilege of Senior Option. They will be expected to be in school all day so they can receive extra assistance to help them be successful.

Parent-teacher conferences are fast approaching. All parents are invited to schedule appointments with their child’s teachers. Conferences are held on November 12 and 19 from 3:30 pm until 7:05 pm. More details about conferences are located within this newsletter. Conferences are a great opportunity for parents to meet their children’s teachers and learn about what is happening in class.

Veteran’s Day is November 11. Student Council has prepared another impressive assembly for our students to honor our local heroes. Veterans are invited to take part in a breakfast followed by a presentation by guest speakers Eric Mansfield from channel 3 news and Copley alum/retired Army General Robert Gaylord. The day’s events will conclude with the raising of the flag in front of our building. Thank you to Mr. Zimmerer and student council for all your hard work.

Sexting and the inappropriate use of electronic devices have recently been a hot topic in the media and for schools. The Summit County Prosecutor’s office has offered our students and schools across Summit County an educational, real-life, eye-opening presentation on this topic. The purpose of the assembly is to educate students on the proper use of their electronic devices and to make them aware of the ramifications of their decisions in using these items. The prosecutor’s office has offered Summit County schools their expertise because of the increased incidents of these issues in schools and society. Juniors and Seniors will take part in the program on November 23 while Freshman and Sophomores will participate on December 17. Please notify the main office in writing by November 16 if you do not want your child participating in this program.

The leaves are falling, the air is becoming chillier, and the days are getting shorter. Winter will be upon us before we know it. The approach of winter brings an end to our fall athletics and marching band seasons. I congratulate all of our students for their successes through the opening of the school year. I wish all of our families a happy Thanksgiving!

Sincerely,

Aaron Sable, Principal Copley High School

The school year is well under way with an excellent start. The first interim reports have been sent home and overall the Guidance staff is extremely pleased with the results. For those students who need to make some improvement and adjustments, stay positive and keep working hard to improve your grades. If you are struggling with certain classes, don’t be afraid to ask the teacher, or perhaps a peer who is doing well in the class, for assistance. Although grades aren’t everything, they are one of the main criteria that colleges consider when deciding whether to admit a student.

Remember to regularly read the monthly Guidance Notes and Smoke Signals for important information pertaining to college, financial aid, careers, and upcoming events.

GUIDANCE NOTES COPLEY STUDENTS RECOGNIZED

Copley High School is pleased to announce that senior Brooke Noval is among the 16,000 high school seniors that are Semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Brooke will have an opportunity to continue in the competition for one of approximately 8,200 Merit Scholarship awards, worth a total of approximately $36 million, to be offered next spring. Before they can be considered for Merit Scholarships awards, Semifinalists must advance to the Finalist level of the competition by fulfilling additional requirements that include having an outstanding academic record, being endorsed and recommended by the high school principal, and submitting SAT I scores that confirm the student’s earlier PSAT/NMQST performances. Other important information about the student’s educational interests and goals, as well as participation and leadership in school and community activities, is provided in the detailed scholarship application the Semifinalists and an official of the high school must complete. NMSC will announce the 2010 Merit Scholarship recipients beginning next April. Congratulations Brooke! Copley High School is pleased to announce that seniors Alex Calderone, Kim Crowley, Andrew Makishi and Emily Nace have been named Commended Students in the National Merit Scholarship Program. These students received a Certificate of Commendation from the school and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). Some 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the competition for Merit Scholarship awards to be offered next spring, Commended Students placed in the top five percent of more than one million students who entered the Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test as juniors. Congratulations Alex, Kim, Andrew, and Emily!

SCHOLARSHIPS AND FINANCIAL AID Most scholarship monies are awarded by particular institutions that look for specific academic or financial aid requirements. While there are general scholarship programs open to everyone regardless of the institution they plan to attend, these generally hold less promise than those associated with a particular institution. When applying to any college or technical school, students should always fill out the separate scholarship/financial aid application which some institutions provide as part of the application. All need-based financial aid is granted only after parents complete a form called the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Students are encouraged to file the FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov between January 1 and February 15. Establish your Personal Identification Number (PIN) at www.pin.ed.gov now so you can submit your FAFSA by mid-February 2010 at the latest.

APPRENTICESHIPS Apprenticeships are standard in over 400 occupations. In an apprenticeship, the employee learns a skilled trade through a combination of theoretical class work and on-the-job training for a prescribed period of time (between 1 and 6 years). The programs vary in length, rate of pay, and intensity between various trades, but upon completion, each employee becomes a journeyman, or skilled craftsman. Fields offering apprenticeships include: automotive mechanics, heating and air conditioning repair and installation, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, firefighting, and jewelry design.

OPPORTUNITIES IN THE MILITARY Entering the military after high school is another avenue, and there are a number of options for military service. It can be a great way to start a career and learn discipline, but don’t expect it to be like in the movies. In addition to a full-time stint, there are ROTC scholarships in over 2300 colleges, which will cover your tuition (and then some) in exchange for 10 hours weekly of classroom and field training, and 4 years of active duty. Military recruiters from the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines, and National Guard are in the Guidance Office on a regular basis. See your counselor for additional information.

SENIOR CONFERENCES This important conference is the first graduation requirement of the year. If you have not yet accomplished this task, schedule an appointment with your counselor TODAY! For seniors planning to attend college, there are two college entrance tests available. Check the colleges of your choice to learn which test is required. Applications for the SAT and ACT are available in the Guidance Office. Test dates are posted in the Guidance Office and on the applications. All test dates have registration deadlines! The next SAT and ACT dates are December 5 & 12, respectively. The registration deadlines are October 30 & November 6. Some of the more selective colleges require achievement tests (called the SAT II) in addition to the regular SAT and ACT tests. Please check with your counselor for specific requirements.

COMMON MYTHS ABOUT COLLEGE

Myth #1 ~ It’s better to get good grades than take challenging courses in high school. Even modest success in advanced or accelerated courses indicates to a college that you seek and can handle challenging courses, like those you will find in college. Taking challenging courses will help you get into a selective college.

Myth #2 ~ You should go to a prestigious college. You should go to the college that “fits” you best. If it happens to be prestigious, that’s fine. However, fit has to do with how you feel when you are on campus, the match with how you learn and how the professors teach, and the academic pressure you can handle. If the college and you are not a good match, you will be unhappy regardless of the prestige.

Myth #3 ~ I need to decide on a career before I can choose a college. College is a time to explore. Except in a few specific cases, you can choose a major in your sophomore year and still complete the degree in four years. A surprising number of students discover their career while taking a course they didn’t expect to enjoy. Don’t let well-meaning friends pressure you into deciding on a major field or a career at this time. Take your time.

Because of the volume of Internet information available to families about scholarships, we will list scholarships when agencies mail us a hard copy about a specific opportunity. Otherwise, students and families should research:

• The individual college’s or university’s website on Scholarship and Financial Aid. • gocollege.com y http://collegenet.com • fastweb.com y http://www.review.com • collegeboard.com y www.christiancollegeguide.net • scholarshipworkshop.com y http://www.uwaterloo.ca/canu • scholarship101.com y http://www.collegeview.com • Scholarships4Students.com y http://www.finaid.org (financial aid) • scholarships.com y http://www.petersons.com • http://fdncenter.org/yip/youth_scholarships.html • http://www.mycollegeguide.org/ACG/search.html • http://www.hillel.org (Jewish campus life)

Inform your guidance counselor of any valuable scholarship websites you discover. We will publicize your discovery. Senior Scholarship opportunities are updated monthly and posted in the Guidance Office and senior classrooms. See Mrs. Kramer in the Guidance Office.

FALL PLANNING GUIDE FOR HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS • Complete standardized testing: ACT and/or SAT. • Visit colleges and apply for admissions. • Conduct scholarship searches. • Register for your PIN at www.pin.ed.gov • Ask EACH college if forms other than the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) are required. (Institutional aid application and/or College Board CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE) ƒ Plan to attend a financial aid information session.

Welcome to the junior year at Copley High School!

You will want to know about some very important dates, programs, and opportunities available this year. Since most of these are one-time events, it is essential to mark your calendar early. Here is information about these significant events: ACT, SAT, and Possibly SAT II These tests should be taken for the first time during the second semester of the junior year. Some students elect to take these tests earlier during their high school experience. Registration may be done at any time prior to the deadlines established for each test. The following college representatives who visit CHS have told us that for the class of 2010, the optional writing section on the ACT and the mandatory writing section on the SAT will be required as part of the college admission process: Case Western Reserve University, College of Wooster, Denison University, Miami University, Oberlin College, Ohio Christian University, The Ohio State University, University of Cincinnati, University of Findlay, University of Toledo, Ohio University, and Kent State University.

To register for the ACT, SAT, or SAT II, (subject area tests), applications and practice materials are located in the Guidance Office. Additionally, both college testing organizations have web sites for on-line registration, more information about their testing programs, and a listing of test dates for the 2009-2010 school year. The web site for the ACT is www.act.org and for the SAT, www.collegeboard.com. For the latter, click on SAT since the College Board sponsors a number of testing programs.

Use the CHS testing code, 361-685, to ensure your child’s scores will be sent to Copley High School. When Copley High School is a test center for the ACT in June or September, the test center code (ACT: 173800) will appear under the state of Ohio and the city of Copley. If the CHS test center code is not present, that is an indication that CHS is not a test site on that particular date or that CHS has reached its capacity for that date. To guarantee your son or daughter is registered to take the ACT at CHS, we recommend that students apply at least three or more months in advance.

The ACT and SAT testing should be complete by ACT Prep Class December of a senior’s school year. Neither the Twenty students completed our ACT Prep class this month. ACT nor the SAT is offered in the summer. The next class will be offered in April and May to prepare students for the June ACT.

COLLEGE VISITS: SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS Students and their parents are encouraged to begin or continue visiting colleges and universities for first-hand information and interaction. Teacher in-service days, spring break, or an occasional pre-planned absence are excellent opportunities for college visits. Summer visits have value, too. However, during the summer, there are generally fewer students on campus and it is harder to understand how the campus operates during the regular school year. An official visit booked through the college’s admissions office is more beneficial than a drive-through or walk-through visit. Seniors will make the best college application decisions if they visit a number of schools.

COLLEGE PLANNING INFORMATION NIGHT: FEBRUARY 18, 2010 The Guidance Department cordially invites parents of juniors and sophomores to attend College Planning Night on February 18, 2010 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the CHS Auditorium. During this evening meeting, CHS Guidance Staff and college representatives will present a comprehensive program ranging from standardized tests to financial aid. There will be time left at the end of the meeting for general questions.

POST-SECONDARY OPTION MEETING FOR PARENTS: FEBRUARY 18, 2010 Parents of juniors, sophomores, and freshmen who are interested in the Post-Secondary Option Program are invited to an informational meeting on February 18, 2010 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the CHS Auditorium. Each family will learn if their child qualifies for this opportunity that allows a student to earn college and high school credits simultaneously.

This meeting will count for the parent/counselor meeting that is required by March 30 if a student wishes to take advantage of this program in the fall of 2010 or the spring of 2011.

COPLEY MUSIC BOOSTERS Next Meeting November 3, 7pm

CHS Main Office Conference Room

A Letter from the President

Music Boosters,

We have had a busy month! As I'm sure all of you know, the band received a "1" rating at our own Fall Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) Copley Marching Band Invitational held on Saturday, October 17. This superior rating means we qualify for the upcoming State Competition! The Band has also received trophies for First Place in Class A and Best Auxiliary at the Lexington Marching Competition on September 26. In addition, we traveled to Cleveland on October 23 at 5:00 AM to perform on the Fox News 8 morning program!

As with all accomplishments, they are not achieved without a lot of help and support. The Boosters and Board express sincere and grateful thanks to all of the following people and organizations for their assistance and participation at the Fall OMEA Copley Marching Band Invitational: Central Instrument Company for its donation of awards; Kiwanis volunteers who provided all of the expertise, time, and assistance in our parking lot management; Dave Haramis for recording and Wayne Rumen for announcing at the event; Nicolette Bartz-Koozer for compiling and publishing the program for the OMEA; Sharon and Greg Schott for organizing and operating the Dessert Cart; Troop 382 and Troop 1 for providing Scouts for the flag raising ceremony; All of the Music Boosters and families for providing volunteer support in the concession stands, tabulation room, hospitality with the judges, and donations of baked food and cider for the Dessert Cart.

Our Concert Chorale experienced what can only be described as a once in a lifetime opportunity in October when they attended a performance by “Chanticleer” in Akron and then spend the entire next day in a workshop with the group. The workshop then culminated in an evening performance which was enjoyed by all.

As the fall sports begin to wind down, so do the fall concessions and I believe we have had a successful year. Thanks to all of the volunteers too numerous to mention for all of the countless shift hours donated for concessions. We hope your support will continue through the Basketball and Wrestling season. Also, many special thanks to all of the chaperones on the buses at the Competitions, football games and other events who volunteer their time and patience in this capacity.

Our newest fundraiser is the Citrus Sale and kickoff for this was October 20. I hope all of the Booster families have received information on this delicious fundraiser. Please look on the website for more information.

We are collecting Acme receipts once again! Please turn in your receipts dated between 9/29/09 and 2/10/10 to the marked boxes in either the CHS Office or CFMS Guidance Office. Boosters will receive 5% cash back on qualifying purchases.

For all of the Night at the Races fans, Kay Makishi and Pam Pelle are preparing a wonderful event in February 2010. More information will follow.

We invite you to our next Music Booster meeting on November 3 at 7:00 PM where we will be brainstorming new and improved ways of fundraising! Your ideas are encouraged and appreciated so hope to see you there!

Again, we continue to invite any parent or family members interested in helping in any way with the Boosters and thus the Music Program to jump in with both feet. There are so many opportunities for service and all are welcomed and encouraged to participate. If we are not reaching you, please feel free to contact us. There is lots of information on the website and we look forward to working with you!

Sincerely, Karen Martin

FOR MORE INFORMATION !!! CHS Theatre Opens Season

Copley High School Theatre Production opens its 2009-2010 season with Michael Frayn’s comedy, Noises off!, directed by Copley High School’s theatre director, Adrienne Scott. Called the funniest farce ever written, Noises off! most recently returned to Broadway with a manic menagerie that sent reviewers searching for new accolades as a cast of itinerant actors rehearsing a flop called NOTHING'S ON.

"The most dexterously realized comedy ever about putting on a comedy. A spectacularly funny, peerless backstage farce. This dizzy, well-known romp is festival of delirium."—The New York Times

"Bumper car brilliance...If laughter is indeed the best medicine, NOISES OFF is worth its weight in Cipro."—New York Daily News

"The funniest farce ever written! Never before has side-splitting taken on a meaning dangerously close to the non-metaphorically medical."—New York Post

"As side-splitting a farce as I have seen. Ever? Ever."—New York Magazine

Music News and Notes

The CHS Music Department has started off the school year with a non-stop performance schedule. The Copley Marching Indians hosted the 11th Annual Invitational on Saturday, October 17. Not soon after, Friday, October 23 brought NorthEast Ohio a live performance on Fox 8 News for the morning segment, “Kickin’ It With Kenny.” One could sense that News anchor Tracy McCool, 1989 Copley graduate, was extremely proud of her Alma Mater because of the way our great young ladies and gentlemen presented themselves and their music.

As a result of the CHS Invitational, our band and colorguard earned a superior rating of a I to qualify for the State Event on Saturday, October 31 at Dublin Coffman stadium in the Columbus area. All students have put in countless hours of hard work and intense effort since July to make every week’s performance a success. Ten football games and a few weekend competitions would make some shudder at the workload. Great job performing at pre-games and halftimes all season! Next up, concert season.

The CHS Concert Chorale has had a gauntlet of a fall season to work through beginning with the Chanticleer Youth Choral Festival on October 7. By invitation, our students spent nearly 12 hours of work in a master class and performance with the internationally recognized “Orchestra of Voices,” Chanticleer. Concert Chorale prepared two selections to perform independently and two pieces to sing in a mass choir setting with all participating groups. The evening performance shared the stage at St. Bernard’s Church in Akron with over 250 singers. As the Executive Director of the Tuesday Musical Club wrote, “the combined voices of your Concert Chorale were incredibly beautiful. I sincerely hope that the students knew what they were doing to the hearts of all of us in the audience; I believe it’s called a ‘transcendent’ moment.”

Two weeks passed and the Concert Chorale again had a professional experience as we teamed together at Revere High School for a workshop with Dr. Daniel Clark from Walsh University. It was a great evening of singing for each other and together with a collegiate director that was quite pleased and impressed with the preparation and mature quality of the ensemble sound.

Finally, the Fall Concert has come and gone for the Vocal Music Department on October 27. The Men’s Chorus, Women’s Chorus and Concert Chorale gave fabulous performances of some truly challenging repertoire. As this fall season comes to a close, we hope to see more of you as audience members at the December concerts for both Band and Choir.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

? Do you think life is moving faster and making less sense? ? Do you think becoming an adult is going to take more effort than you thought? ? Do you think it might be harder to get a job than last year? ? Do you think you’d better get as much education as you can before tackling the world?

If you answered yes to any question, let us help you start adulthood more confidently. Our answer to these questions is: TAKE BUSINESS CLASSES! Learn skills you will never forget whether you use them now or when you are 45! Copley offers classes in accounting, overviews of computer programs in Computer I and programming in Computer II, and advanced applications in Word and Spreadsheets. We also have credit- for-work classes with Senior Business, Marketing, and Business Technologies. We can help you prepare to have the skills employers are looking for.

Talk to Ms. Dann, Mrs. Kelley, or Mr. Knight to discuss what a difference a business class makes in your life now—and later. ************************************************************

AP Spanish Students Help Their Peers As part of their course requirements, the students in the Advanced Placement Spanish class at the high school have been busy helping students in level I & II classes. The experience is beneficial for both groups, as the beginning students enjoy having help from a peer, while the advanced students get to reinforce what they have learned. In the photo, Alejandro Gamboa, Rohin Vij, Omer Khan, and Ariel Cohen work with a Spanish II class. *************************************************************************** CHESS CLUB Chess Club is off to another great year. We will compete in the Akron Chess League, which begins in December. Also we will be entering some tournaments along the way, with the first being the Grade Level Championships on Nov. 21st. The police department will be accepting names of needy families (with children under the age of 12) and senior citizens (not necessarily needy) for participation in the "Share A Christmas" program. If you know of a family that could use some assistance, or know a senior citizen who would appreciate a visit from a Police Officer, please call the police department at 330-670-2725.
