Bill Oppenheim NO SURPRISES There really wasn=t much Fasig-Tipton officials could say that virtually everybody in the business doesn=t already know; as Denali=s Craig Bandoroff put it in Tues- day=s TDN, AI don=t think there are as many end users as there have been in the past. There=s more supply than there is demand.@ With a heavily American-based buyers list, the number of horses sold was down 14 percent, the gross was down 23 percent, and the average was off by 10 percent. In all three categories, the numbers were almost identical to those in the MRLS year of 2003, when 303 sold (305 this year) for $28,202,000 ($28,151,000 this year), an average of $93,076 ($92,298 this year). The difference, of course, was that only 463 were catalogued in 2003, whereas there were 568 catalogued this year. The clearance rate of sold/catalogued was just 54 percent this year, versus 65 percent in 2003 (61 percent last year). In particular, Fasig-Tipton=s Walt Robertson pinpointed the weakness in the lower ranges of their market.
