It is located in the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness. While Huron barely rises above 14,000 feet, it compensates by being the Sawatch fourteener that is farthest from a paved road. The Collegiate Peaks Wilderness was established in 1980 to preserve its quality, character, and integrity. It is intended as a place where the imprint of humans is substantially unnoticed; where natural processes are the primary influences and human activity is limited to primitive recreation and minimum tools. This will allow us, and future generations, to experience the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness in its natural condition. Trails South Winfield Trailhead (2WD) 5.4 miles (one way) 10.8 miles (round trip); 3,800 feet gain Clear Creek South Fork Trailhead (4WD) 3.3 miles (one way) 6.6 miles (round trip); 3,400 feet gain Starting from Leadville, travel south on US 24 to Clear Creek Reservoir, then travel west on Chaffee County Road 390 for 11 miles to the ghost town of Winfield. Turn south on Forest Service Road 390.2B. After ¼ mile there is parking for passenger cars (S.Winfield TH). Those with high clearance, 4WD vehicles can go an additional 2.5 – 3 miles to the end of South Clear Creek Road (Clear Creek S. Fork TH). From this parking area follow the South Clear Creek Road and then signs for Mount Huron.
