Notes on Jake Arrieta’s Second No-Hitter Jake Arrieta tossed his second-career no-hitter April 21, 2016 against the Reds at Great American Ball Park ... he became the third Cubs pitcher to throw multiple no-hitters, joining Larry Corcoran and Ken Holtzman, and is the first Cubs pitcher to ever throw a no-hitter in consecutive seasons. © Jake became only the fourth reigning Cy Young Award winner to throw a no-hitter, joining elite company that includes Sandy Koufax (1964), Bob Gibson (1971) and Clayton Kershaw (2014). © Jake became the eighth pitcher in major league history to throw a no-hitter in consecutive seasons, the first since Tim Lincecum in 2013-14 … he became the second pitcher in major league history to throw a no-hitter on the road in consecutive campaigns, joining Kansas City’s Steve Busby from 1973 (at Detroit) and 1974 (at Milwaukee) … all notes thanks to Elias. © Jake’s first no-hitter occurred last August 30 at the Dodgers, a mere 10 starts prior … only two pitchers in big league history went fewer starts between no-hitters: Johnny Vander Meer, the only pitcher to throw no-hitters in consecutive starts (1938) and Warren Spahn, who had five starts between no-hitters on September 16, 1960 and April 28, 1961 … Jake and Vender Meer are the only two pitchers to toss a pair of no-hitters without a loss inbetween. © The only more lopsided no-hitter in major league history took place more than 130 years ago when the Buffalo Bisons scored 18 runs in support of Pud Galvin’s brilliance against the Detroit Wolverines on August 4, 1884 … the Cubs became the first team in big league history to hit five home runs in support of a no-hitter.
