David Bowie

An enormous mural honouring David Bowie has been painted on the side of a ruined building in the Bosnian capital, Sarajevo. It was created by local artists Enis Cisic and Zoran Herzeg but the idea came from musician Vedad Trbonja who describes Bowie as his “spiritual father.” The 13 metres high by 10.5 metres wide mural references Bowie’s songs Heroes and Fashion. It carries the words “Fashion changes but you’ll always be my heroes.” The site of the mural is near the street which became known as Sniper Alley during the 1993-95 war when civilians were targeted by Serbian marksmen. The building has been left in ruins as a permanent reminder of the conflict and a memorial to those who were killed. In other Bowie news, previously unseen photos of David have gone on display in Los Angeles and Paris. By Lewis Beale

ou’d think making a fi lm about a writer and the writing process would be the last thing a director would want to do. After all, what is it like to be a writer? You sit at Yyour desk, pounding away at your computer or typewriter, or writing on a yellow legal pad. Hour after hour. Day after day. Yawn. Yet fi lms about writers, both real and fi ctional, have been a staple of the cinema for decades. Which means there’s something else besides the writing process that attracts our attention. “Examining the world of a writer in isolation is potentially dramatically inert,” says Michael Grandage, director of Genius. The fi lm explores the volatile relationship between editor Maxwell Perkins and author Thomas Wolfe. “Writing is a very lonely profession,” Grandage says. “In order for a fi lm to work, you have to have some interaction with someone else.” The bottom line: Whether it’s real-life writers like Truman Capote or fi ctional ones like Barton Fink, the process of dealing with editors, money problems, you name it, is key. As is the writer’s own personality. “When we handle a book ourselves, all we have is the relationship between the book and us,” says Grandage, “and any fi lm that examines how we get to the book is of interest. The fi lms that work are because they investigate the personality of the writer.” That said, here are 10 fi lms about writers that really work.
