ICE SHOW SKATERS’ GUIDE KEEP THIS ON YOUR FRIDGE – YOU WILL NEED IT!

KEY DATES AND TIMES

March 7 to April 2 – REHEARSALS • Schedule is posted in arena lobby and on our website @ www.markhamskatingclub.com. • YOU MUST BE AT ALL REHEARSALS. And yes, there ARE rehearsals during March Break. • To help parents cope with these busy evenings, volunteers will be selling easy, inexpensive light meals and snacks from 5:30-7:30 most evenings (whenever we get enough volunteers). All money goes to support the Ice Show. • Some “regular” sessions are available at no cost to Ice Show skaters (Intermediate and up). Please contact your private coach directly to schedule private lessons. (See rehearsal schedule for details).

Monday, March 21st @ 4pm – ICE SHOW TICKET SALES OPEN ONLINE • Link to online ticket sales on the home page of our website @ www.markhamskatingclub.com. • The best seats go FAST: buy EARLY to ensure best seating. • There are three price levels: $25 and $20 for pre-assigned seats or $15 for general admission. General admission seats are in the permanent arena stands (benches on the west side of arena). • Skaters who are only in the first half of the show may join their families in the audience for the second half. The skaters watching the second half MUST HAVE A TICKET to hold a seat. ‘Second half’ tickets are $10. • Tickets are final sale. No returns or exchanges. • For more ticket information call the MSC office at 905-472-6982 or email: [email protected]. • Watch your email for more information; be sure the office has your correct email address.

Sunday, April 3rd – PHOTOGRAPHY DAY (Schedule on p.2) • Photos of skaters in costume will be taken on Sunday, April 3. • We have booked a professional photographer so this is the ONLY day pictures will be taken. There are no options for re-scheduling or re-takes. • Costumes will be at the arena for skaters to put on. After photos, the costumes STAY at the arena. • Photos are taken WITH SKATES ON, so don’t forget skates, tights and guards. • Skaters who wear helmets to skate do not need them for photo day. • Check in at the table in the lobby at least 30-mins before photo time with hair and makeup done. (See hair and makeup details on p.7). • You can buy photos in the lobby during dress rehearsals and performances.

The dressing room coordinator will contact volunteers soon to schedule dressing room helpers. If you did not volunteer yet but would like to be in a dressing room with the children, please email Tammy Dawson at [email protected]. (Volunteers for other areas will also be contacted soon if they haven’t been called already).

MONDAY APRIL 4 & TUESDAY APRIL 5: PRODUCTION REHEARSALS • Monday, April 4 – PJ Day! Yes, everyone will skate in pyjamas! Wear something warm underneath. • Tuesday, April 5 – Tacky Tuesday! Wear anything that looks horrible (that you can still move in). Clashing is key! • These rehearsals are a run through of the show in sequence involving staging, other on-ice adjustments and final touches. (No costumes yet). Please be patient – these may be long rehearsals, as our lighting and technical crew learns the show and we smooth out any “kinks.” • Rehearsals START at 5:00 pm SHARP. Please be on time, and allow enough time to change into skating attire before 5:00 pm. o Penguins may arrive at 5:30 pm o Penguins enter through doors at southeast end of arena (red door beside the zamboni doors), where they will be SIGNED IN and escorted by a volunteer to their supervised dressing room. o Everyone else must check in at the main arena doors, and from there will be directed to the dressing rooms for their court. o Penguins and Circus Bugs may be picked up immediately after they skate (same location as drop off). • Make sure your skaters eat before coming to the arena. Snacks are allowed between skate times during production rehearsals as these do not involve costumes. Do not bring snacks that may contain nuts; we have several skaters with severe nut allergies. • Skaters should dress warmly both days, because between skates the skaters sit backstage in the stands with their courts (supervised by court helpers). It can be cold. o Sweat pants, sweaters and jackets are warmer than skating dresses and tights. Small blankets for over skaters’ legs work well. o Skaters may bring homework, books, puzzles or small activities. o We are not responsible for personal belongings. Consider leaving electronics at home. • Parents may sit in the stands or lobby during production rehearsals, but not backstage with skaters. • Skaters who are in the FIRST HALF ONLY: o All first half skaters must be picked up from the court supervisors when their production rehearsal is over (approximately 7:45 pm). They may not sit in the lobby to watch the second half; first half court supervisors leave when first half rehearsal ends. • Skaters who are in BOTH HALVES OF THE SHOW: o On Production Rehearsals, skaters in both halves should finish at approx. 9:45 pm. • Note that these are not exact times – it is difficult to be specific, so please be patient and flexible. • All skaters are supervised by volunteers until they are picked up.

In Production Rehearsals, the Opening Line and Solo will rehearse with the second half of the show.

Production Rehearsal Days: 1st half finishes at approx. 7:45; 2nd half at approx. 9:45. Note that these are not exact times. It is difficult to be specific, so please be patient and flexible.

WEDNESDAY APRIL 6 & THURSDAY APRIL 7: DRESS REHEARSALS Page 4 of 8

• Dress rehearsals are a complete run of the show with full costume, hair, makeup and lighting. • Skaters should arrive in clothes that fasten in the front to protect hair and makeup. Bring a bag to keep your street clothes together while you are in costume; your skate bag will be fine. • For skaters who wear helmets, the face masks (cages) are optional. This is completely the choice of parents, but many do remove helmet cages for dress rehearsals and performances. Please do not remove the cage if you (or your skater) are not comfortable doing so. • Please make sure your skaters eat before they come to the arena. Skaters ARE NOT allowed to eat, drink or chew gum while in costume. No snacks at all. • SPECTATORS ARE NOT PERMITTED IN THE LOBBY OR STANDS DURING DRESS REHEARSALS. Only pre-registered dressing room helpers are allowed in dressing rooms. Only performers, stage crew, and pre-registered volunteer assistants are permitted backstage. • Dress rehearsals START at 6:00 pm. Please arrive at 5:30 with hair and makeup done. This will allow enough time to get to your dressing room, put your costume and skates on, and warm up. o Penguins may arrive at 6:00 pm. o As with production rehearsals, Penguins should enter through doors at southeast end of arena (red door beside the zamboni doors), where they will be SIGNED IN, and escorted by a volunteer to their supervised dressing room. o Everyone else checks in at the main arena doors, as usual. After signing in, go straight to your assigned dressing room. o Penguins and Circus Bugs may be picked up immediately after they skate (same location as drop off). • No men are allowed in girls’ dressing rooms (female court supervisors will assist young skaters). “Messengers” will be sent in if necessary. • Skaters stay with their court for the entire rehearsal; they will be supervised until they are finished. o Skaters should dress warmly both days, because between skates the skaters sit backstage in the stands with their courts (supervised by court helpers). It can be cold. o Coats are to be worn over costumes. Skaters may also bring blankets to sit on and wrap around their legs to keep warm. o Be sure to label EVERYTHING! o Skaters may bring homework, books, puzzles or small activities. Markers or anything else that may harm costumes will not be allowed. o We are not responsible for personal belongings. Consider leaving electronics at home. • On Dress Rehearsal days, skaters who are in the first half only will be finished at approximately 8:15 pm. Skaters who are in both halves of the show should be finished at approximately 9:45 pm. o All first half skaters must be picked up from the court supervisors when their rehearsal is over. Court supervisors leave after the first half. o First half skaters may not sit in the lobby to watch the second half of dress rehearsals. o When picking up skaters, please do so at main arena doors.

Dress Rehearsal Days: 1st half finishes at approx. 8:15; 2nd half at approx. 9:45. Note that these are not exact times. It is difficult to be specific, so please be patient and flexible.

FRIDAY APRIL 8, SATURDAY APRIL 9 & SUNDAY APRIL 10: SHOW DAYS! Page 5 of 8

• Skaters need to arrive 5:30 pm for 7:00 pm shows, and at 11:30 am for 1:00 pm shows. • NOTE: Penguins arrive at 6:30 pm for 7:00 pm shows, and at 12:30 pm for 1:00 pm shows. • ONLY Penguins should enter through the doors at southeast end of arena (red door beside the zamboni doors). As usual, they will be signed in and escorted directly to their supervised dressing room. • Everyone else SIGNS IN at the main arena doors, and proceeds to their assigned dressing room. • Penguins & Circus Bugs may be picked up right after they skate (same location as drop off).

SHOW TIMES: FRIDAY, APRIL 8TH – 7 PM SATURDAY, APRIL 9TH – 1 PM & 7 PM (NOTE: for skaters who perform in both halves, this is a fast turnaround from end of the matinée to call time for the evening show. Plan a quick dinner!) SUNDAY, APRIL 10TH – 1 PM

THERE IS NO SUNDAY EVENING SHOW

We need additional workers to help set-up and take down the show. Set-up is April 2nd at 9 am, and we pack up the trucks immediately after the Sunday matinee on April 10th at 3 pm. If you can help, please contact Dave DeKort: [email protected].

SKATES, HAIR, MAKEUP & COSTUMES

Skates & Guards: • Skate guards must be cut to fit the length of the skate blades. If they are too long, it is dangerous on the stairs. **Some skaters must go upstairs in skates to and from their dressing rooms.** • Label your guards! Guards are kept in big boxes by court – there could be 15 pairs in together! • Skates should be sharpened immediately before production week – NOT on show day! • Skate laces must be tucked into the top of the skate boots.

Hair: • All female skaters should have their hair tied back in a ponytail with a hair elastic of a colour close to the skater’s hair colour. (Goody brand hair elastics work well). • Use plenty of gel and hairspray to smooth hair down. No wispy hairs are allowed around the head. • Do NOT use hairpins or barrettes. They are extremely dangerous to skaters if they drop on the ice. • A limited supply of glitter hairspray will be provided in each dressing room. • Some courts will have hair accessories (scrunchies, bows, ribbons, etc...) provided as part of their costume. When changing out of costume, be sure to put all accessories back in the baggie provided with your costume and attach it to the hanger at the end of each dress rehearsal and show.

Makeup: • All female skaters are responsible for purchasing and applying their own make-up. o Black eyeliner, black mascara, red lipstick, pink blush and glittery eye shadow to be worn by all female skaters. (Glittery eye shadow available at Claire’s, Ardene & Shoppers Drug Mart). o Exception: Circus Bugs and Penguins should wear only pink “rosy cheeks” (bright pink blush will work). No other makeup is required. • Skaters may not wear anything that could fall onto the ice: no hairpins, pierced earrings or other jewelry (MedicAlert bracelets are the only exception).

Costumes: • Costumes are the property of the Markham Skating Club and must remain in the dressing rooms at all times. They are not to be taken home for any reason. Costumes, headpieces and accessories may NOT be altered or tampered with in any way. If you have concerns, advise the court supervisor who will speak to a costumer. • ALL FEMALE SKATERS (except Circus Bugs and Penguins) MUST PURCHASE THEIR OWN NEW ICE SHOW TIGHTS. o Tights must be MONDOR #3371 or #3337 FOOTED TIGHTS, colour “Suntan”. They are available for purchase in the MSC office during rehearsals or at the Figure Skating Boutique. o All female skaters (except Circus Bugs and Penguins) should also have skin-tone high cut underwear, as panties must not show. If you prefer, you may choose to wear no underwear under tights. • Skaters should arrive in clothes that fasten in the front to protect hair and makeup. Bring a bag for street clothes (your skate bag would be fine). • Skaters must ensure any undergarments (t-shirts, bras, tank tops, panties) do not show once the costumes are on. Strapless bras or clear straps work best.

4 THINGS IMPORTANT ENOUGH TO REPEAT

1. EAT BEFORE COMING – no snacks allowed in costume! 2. WEAR CLOTHES THAT ARE EASY TO TAKE OFF OVER HAIR AND MAKEUP (NOT over your head) 3. BRING: ü Skates with guards that are cut to fit your skates and labeled with your name. ü Hair brush, fine tooth comb, hairspray, gel and makeup. (Mirrors will be provided in dressing rooms). ü Bag for your street clothes. ü Coat and blanket to keep warm. ü Things to keep younger skaters occupied (no markers)! § We are not responsible for personal items, so label EVERYTHING, and consider leaving electronics at home. ü Older skaters: your homework! ü Everyone: your patience! § Rehearsals may look chaotic as we work to produce our best ice show ever; rehearsal pick up times are only approximate and we ask parents to please be patient and flexible. 4. MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL – HAVE FUN!
