The taxa of Cryptocephalinae (Clytrini), Synetinae and part of Galerucinae introduced by Carl Peter Thunberg are reviewed based on the examination of primary type specimens deposited in the Museum of Evolution, Uppsala University. The following taxonomic changes are proposed: Coptocephala unifasciata unifasciata (Scopoli, 1763) = Cryptocephalus melanocephalus Thunberg, 1787 syn. nov.; Melitonoma decemnotata (Thunberg, 1787) comb. nov. (from Cryptocephalus Geoffroy, 1762); Miopristis flexuosa (Thunberg, 1821) = Miopristis namaquensis Medvedev, 1993 syn. nov.; Protoclytra (Lacordairella) taeniata (Thunberg, 1821) comb. nov. (from Camptolenes Chevrolat, 1836) = Camptolenes fastuosa (Lacordaire, 1848) syn. nov.; Smeia undata (Thunberg, 1821) comb. nov. Abstract Phylogenetic relationships among major groups of Criocerinae were reconstructed using molecular data (mitochondrial cytochrome oxi- dase I and 12S rDNA, and nuclear histone 3). The monophyly of Criocerinae was consistently and robustly supported. The Lema group including Lema, Oulema and Neolema was recovered as a clade, with the latter two genera imbedded within Lema. The Lilioceris group was placed as the sister taxon of the Lema group, and the genus Crioceris was identified as the sister taxon of theLilioceris + Lema groups. The monophyly and/or validity of Mecoprosopus Chûjô, 1951 and the subgenera Lema, Petauristes Latreille, 1829, Quasilema Monrós, 1960, Microlema Pic, 1932, and Bradyceris Chûjô, 1951 were not confirmed. The monophyly of the subgenus Lema except for the type species L. cyanea was supported by molecular and morphological data, and we termed it the cyanella clade. -

Abstract External and internal head structures of last instar (3rd) larvae, 4th day pupae and adults of Chrysomela populi were examined using a combination of traditional and modern morphological techniques, especially µ-computed tomography and computer-based 3D reconstruction. Morphological differences and similarities between the stages were assessed. In addition to long known transformations such as the appearance of compound eyes and the reorientation of the head capsule, the adult differs from the larva by having elongated antennae and palps, a gula and anterior and dorsal tentorial arms. Additionally, several changes in the muscular system occur. Most of these cephalic transformations are related to different tasks playing a predominant role in the developmental stages: feeding in the larvae, and dispersal and mating in the adults, the latter requiring improved sensory perception. -

Chaboo Date approved: Tuesday, April 22, 2014 iii THESIS ABSTRACT Shining leaf beetles (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae, Criocerinae; ~1500 spp) are considered amongst the earliest diverging leaf beetle lineage to attack early angiosperms. Although they are distributed worldwide, little is known about their biology and evolutionary relationships. Schmitt (1988) generated the first morphology-based phylogeny using four genera: ((Lilioceris + Crioceris) + (Lema + Oulema)). Teo (1999) is the second phylogenetic hypothesis (unpublished), this morphology-based phylogeny shows ((Pseudocriocerii + Criocerini (Lemini). Vencl et al (2004) proposed a phylogenetic hypothesis for the Central American genera ((Crioceris + Metopoceris) + (Lema + (Neolema + Oulema)). These three studies sampled a subset of the recognized genera and lacked large outgroup representation. Nevertheless, they provide a general understanding about phylogenetic relationships in Criocerinae. In this research I tested: 1) the systematic position of Criocerinae, 2) the monophyly of the subfamily, and 3) the intrageneric relationships by generating a molecular dataset and developing a new phylogentic hypothesis of evolutionary relationships. -

Working with the Canadian Centre for DNA Barcoding, we obtained DNA barcodes from recently collected and authoritatively identified specimens in the University of Alaska Museum Insect Collection and the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge collection. -

Besides his numerous papers and books on leaf beetles, he has also published on ants, especially ant-plant interactions, on parasites of insects, and on broader topics, such as evolution. -
