THE KLONDIKE SUN WEDNESDAY, JULY 23, 2014 P11 Fire Department Open House was for the locals Story & Photos By Dan Davidson THE

While many of the summer events in Dawson are set up to draw in the tourist crowd, that’s not always the case. KLONDIKE SUN The Fire Dept. Open House on July 16 was put on for locals, said Fire Chief Jim Regimbal. It wasn’t advertised in any of the usual places. If visitors to town happened to find out about it and turned up for hamburgers, smokies, lemonade and coffee, that was fine with the fire fighters’ association, but the main point was to provide an event for locals. Sparky the Fire Dog was on hand, “wearing the fur” (as Stephen King put it in Joyland) to please the kiddies. Children of all ages were invited to try their hand at knocking over a “flame” target with a pressure hose. Fire extinguishers were demonstrated, and kids got a chance to go for a ride in one of Sign up at the fire trucks. The Firefighters’ Museum was open for tours, including a video slide show of some of the more www.klondikesun.com recent actions by the department. The fire station itself was also open for tours. There were balloons for the kids, a good many of which either popped or headed to the top of the Midnight Dome when they got away. The event was well attended and, if smiles are any indication, much appreciated. Subscribe to The Klondike Sun! Only $44 per year! { (visit klondikesun.com for details) }

a water strategy FOR YUKON

We listened to Yukoners talk about water. “ We need clean water, healthy water and lots of it,” you said.

“ People need it, the economy needs it and the environment needs it,” you said.

“ And we’ll need it today, tomorrow and forever.”

We developed the YUKON WATER STRATEGY AND ACTION PLAN based on Yukoners’ desires and hopes for this most essential of our resources. It’s a comprehensive plan for making decisions to maintain the quality, quantity and health of Yukon water for everyone. It’s a big-picture plan and we’ll be spending an additional $2.7 million over three years on projects to make it happen. The Sun obtained funding in late 2009 from the City of Dawson, YTG’s Heritage Branch and the Community Development Fund to conserve and archive early issues and make them available once again in the public domain. This is a great resource for students, writers and historians, and also for prospective tourists with an interest in Dawson City’s life. Each month, we are re-printing our front pages from 20 years ago (seen above) as a souvenir of our lively history. If you want to see page 2 and beyond, check out our website. Past issues are available there for download. Go to http://klondikesun.com. More will be added periodically (heh) when we have time! Artist Profile: Jordy Walker Artist Profile: Mariana Silva and Juan Cruz Bracamante

Mandrágora circus started as a theatre company in 2002 in the Chubut Province of Patagonia, . Formed by Mariana Silva and Juan Cruz Bracamonte, who have been performing music, theatre, dance, and circus since 1998, the company pre- miered the play Mandrágora Circo in 2003. Since 2005, the duo has toured through sixteen countries in Central and , the U.S. and Canada, performing in Theatre Festivals and Fairs across the continent. Silva and Bracamonte have been described as mimes, musicians, actors, magicians, comedians, clowns, contortion- ists, and trapeze artists, among other titles, and have developed an enchanting play full of magic and wonder. The performance is a wordless story weaved together through humour, love, and dialogue that are made apparent using music, circus skills, and the artists’ bodies to convey meaning. Using props such as an umbrella, a violin bow, an accordion, a saw, and juggling clubs, the protagonists will take us on a heartfelt and poetic journey that is sure to inspire the imaginations of children and adults alike. The duo will be performing a free show at the Gazebo on Saturday, August 16th, as well as putting on a kids workshop (TBA). This pair is not to be missed!

Exploring the vast array of possibility within the realm of music and sound, Jordy Walker is an artist in many senses of the word. A composer, producer, recording engineer, sound artist, and multi-instrumentalist, Walker has been a fundamental component of the Yukon music scene for many years and has toured and performed in venues throughout the country. His work has been featured in documentaries and short films for CBC, NFB, The , and HIFI, among others, as well as in theatre and contemporary dance productions across Canada. While in Dawson, Walker will be presenting The Guitar Tree – an interactive sound art installation in which participants create an improvised piece using digi- tal sound manipulation and kinetic force. The installation involves two participants at a time, suspended instruments, and the artist himself recording the impromptu sound session, so that it can be e-mailed to those that created it. With this piece, Walker plays with the idea of “controlled randomness” – that space of unknowing where intentionally created sound collides with uncontrollable variables. “It is the infinite nuance inherent to unstructured sound that interests me”, says Walker. The Guitar Tree promises to be a captivating, thought-provoking installation that will leave participants and onlookers alike with an experience not soon forgotten. CYFT 106.9 FM: THIS IS JUST MY OPINION Dawson City Community Radio by Al Sider

We all live in Glass Houses This topic will require you, the reader, to open your mind to the vast world of Imagination. I wonder what this world, or rather life on this world, might be like if every building on earth were made of glass. This is where your imagination can come into play. “The Spirit of Dawson” Every building on earth is made of glass, and there are no curtains, or any methods by which to conceal any thing occurring behind those walls. When every small thing that MONDAY & TUESDAY occurs can be scrutinized by every single person, and every person can be scrutinized by everyone else. What would life on our planet be like then? Immorality would be practically 1 to 5 p.m. Mr. Manager - Manager’s Mix nonexistent, murders and rapes would be almost impossible to conceal. How easy would it be then to commit adultery, to beat ones spouse or children? People WEDNESDAY would be afraid to do any immoral or illegal action. Thievery, murder, assaults, sexual 1 to 5 p.m. Mr. Manager - Manager’s Mix deviance, all actions deemed “unacceptable” would be virtually nonexistent. Since every action one performed could be observed be every person in the community, the sheer fear 5 to 6 p.m. DJ Robotic of being discovered would prevent one from performing deviant behaviours. 6 to 7 p.m. The Alpine Robot - The Earwig Here is where imagination needs to be in focus once again. Imagine if you will, that there 7 to 9 p.m. Nick - The Grind is indeed a real God, one who created the universe, as well as you and I. If in fact this God is real, then in reality, each individual on this planet lives inside a very real “Glass House”. But 9 to 10 p.m. Matt - Luxton On The Mike these glass houses are very different from the ones described above. Our very bodies are the glass houses. Everything we say and do, in private, in thought, in public, and in hidden THURSDAY places is observed. Though obviously, these are not observed by everyone, but by the very 4 to 5 p.m. Rachael - The Odd Hour One who may one day Judge each of us. Before Him, nothing is hidden, not even our deepest secret thoughts. But unlike the Glass Houses above, we are not afraid to act immorally, we 5 to 6 p.m. Ricky and Friends - Youth Broadcast lie, cheat, steal, rape, murder, commit sexual deviancy, and I often wonder the reason. 7 to 8 p.m. Kajambo! Radio - Paulie P. The reason has become quite clear to me, only recently. Our world is quickly turning 8 to 9 p.m. Ben and Brandon - Kings of Dawson City further and further away from the idea or belief in God, especially a God who is watching 9 to 10 p.m. Ricky - Trenchtown 1G0 your every action, attitude, and knows your most intimate and secret thoughts. The vast majority of atrocities are committed by individuals who do not believe in a God who watches them and who will one day punish them for their actions, but that is not the case FRIDAY for all persons who commit offences. 1 to 2 p.m. The Felix Hour Sadly, many individuals commit these types of atrocities because of their belief in God. These people believe that they are the instruments of God’s vengeance, and that their acts 2 to 3 p.m. Chris - Southside City Swag of immorality are condoned by God. Both Muslim terrorists and Christian extremists are 3 to 5 p.m. DJ Robotic examples of these. Then there are those who believe that God gives them ownership of their 5 to 6 p.m. Diego - Golden Frequencies spouse and children, and this allows them to do as they please with them, no matter how 6 to 8 p.m. James - QRSTUVWXYZ immoral that might be. Let me make this very clear, God does not give permission to any believer to abuse his family. Yes, according to Biblical teachings, as well as teachings in the 8 to 9 p.m. Sarah - Dancing Alone Qur’an, God does give “ownership” of the wife and children to the husband and fathers, but 9 to 11 p.m. Mathias - The Fox and The Forest not in the sense that they are to be abused in any form. So how does the husband and father “own” his wife and children according to the Bible SATURDAY and Qur’an? The husband is to love his wife as himself, Decisions are to be discussed but the final decision belongs to the husband. Sexually, the wife is not permitted to deny her 3 to 4 p.m. Johnny Moon - The Sad Bastard Hour husband, except by agreement and only for a short period of time. But likewise the husband 4 to 5 p.m. The Eclectic Chair is not permitted to deny his wife. The reason for this is to prevent either the husband or 5 to 7 p.m. The City Mike the wife from sexual immorality, cheating on each other. The Bible once taught death to the 7 to 8 p.m. Kelsey - Mixtape for my girlfriend spouse who cheats, but it was altered in the New Testament, and the Christian is taught to forgive. How much could these be eliminated if we only realize that we do live in Glass 8 to 10 p.m. Sonny Boy Williams - Rocking Blues Houses, each and every one of us. Our lives are 100% visible, not to each other, but to the God of the universe. Is it any wonder that Paul tells us, “Work out your own salvation with SUNDAY fear and trembling.” If we accept that we are being scrutinized in every facet of our lives, 3 to 5 p.m. and Kyle - The Married Life every though, action, attitude and behaviour is observed, would we not be afraid to think or behave in am immoral manner? It is in this portrayal that I suggest that we all, each of us 5 to 6 p.m. DJ Robotic individually, reside in Glass Houses. We are all being observed in our thoughts, behaviours 6 to 7 p.m. Damian - 6 Degrees of Separation and attitudes and there will be rewards and consequences to those whether we believe in 7 to 9 p.m. Kit – Meat and Potatoes God or not. The truth of the matter is simply(Ed note: this, Stuart “for those Chase) who do not believe no amount of proof will ever suffice, to those who do believe, no proof is necessary.” Sorry, but I do 9 to 10 p.m. Britta and The Sweet Spot not remember who stated these words , but they are good words to remember. While we do not in reality live in “Glass Houses” our individual lives are abundantly Tune your dial to 106.9 FM or crystal clear. We need to observe and recognize this reality, and perhaps then, each of us Cable Channel 11 (Rolling Ads) in Dawson City, will become the potential people we were all meant to be, living in peace, harmony and love or listen live over the internet at www.cfyt.ca! one with another, where hostility, anger, lust, and all forms of negativity no longer exist. As long as we think that we are not being observed, in every area of our lives, we will continue to live lives that are secret, hidden, dangerous, hostile, and immoral. What do YOU want to believe?
