That arose from his working for NatWest Bank since 1966 and becoming treasurer of the Lancaster & Agricultural Society. The Walk is something quite unique and an unforgettable spiritual experience. It is not a physical walk, but three days spent learning, being loved, and growing in God’s Grace and Abundance. The three days have distinct phases:

The focus of Day One is God and the relationship God offers;

Day Two is Jesus Christ and each disciple’s response to the Grace of God in the context of Christian community;

Day Three is the Holy Spirit and the call to live as an active member of the body of Christ through service in church and community.

Santa’s Sleigh

Members of Rotary and other Santa’s helpers managed to bring Santa to all of the daytime events and all but two of the local villages during the evenings before Christmas. We were pleased to be made welcome after the spirit of Christmas was challenged by flooding and loss of electrical supplies. Unfortunately, due to heavy rain and strong winds on the scheduled nights, we had to cancel visits to Bolton-le- Sands [North] and Slyne with Hest.

Santa’s visits would not have been so successful without the loan of a vehicle from Norjac Mitsubishi in Carnforth, or the provision of tangerines by Speights in Lancaster. All monies donated will go back into the local areas over the next six months. While we allocate a portion to well known charities involved with Cancer Care, we shall be pleased to receive suggestions for other worthy causes via [email protected]

Many thanks Ken McGrath

Pain often occurs gradually over a period of time and is not usually attributed to a specific incident of injury. There are a number of disorders that can cause pain at the side of the hips. The low back is capable of referring pain into this area but there are many structures on the side of the leg and hip that can become injured when put under undue stress and strain.

The side of the hip is home to large muscles and tendons that help to stabilise the hip and the knee. Pain from these can present to the front, back or directly over the large bony aspect that is easily felt on the side of the hip known as the Greater Trochanter. Pain may also radiate into the buttocks or down the side of the thigh and knee. These structures often become over loaded / over used, causing micro trauma within them, when an individual demonstrates poor control of the hip joint. Imagine a rope put under strain and then looked at through a microscope. You would see the rope fraying under the strain. This is similar to what happens as these structures become stressed.

The muscles in your bottom (the Gluteal muscles) stabilise the hip and pelvis when you stand on one leg during walking. If the Gluteals do not function as they should, excessive movement of the hips can occur (hip instability) causing a dip of the pelvis on the opposite side (see picture). The exaggerated sway of the pelvis creates a bowstring effect on the muscles and tendons on the outside of the hip. The greater the sideways movement, the greater the tension on the outside of the hip and the increased risk of micro trauma and injury.

After a while, hanging your hip on these structures becomes habitual and most of the time you will be unaware that you are doing it until it starts to become painful. Propping on one leg during standing is a classic example of this. Young mothers are particularly guilty of this as they sit their baby on their waist in order to free up a hand to complete tasks. People who stand for long periods of time also fall into this trap as they fatigue and look to shift their weight from leg to leg to alleviate pressure from each foot. If you are sitting reading this with your legs crossed, you too are increasing the tension across the outside of the hip and disengaging your Gluteal and core muscles. So stop it!

Avoiding these postures by actively standing on two legs and sitting correctly without crossing the legs at either the thighs or ankles will help reduce the risk of injury. Keeping your Gluteals strong will also help to prevent lateral hip pain and help alleviate symptoms.

For more information on this and other hip and knee injuries, please come along to the 3rd in a series of FREE lectures hosted by Physiotherapist Rob Barker (RGB PHYSIOTHERAPY) at 19:30 – 21:00 at the Centre @ Halton on Wednesday 2nd March 2016.
