Presidents Report For myself, due principally to personal events, this has been a challenging year to continue with the required time commitment and enthusiasm to progress the changes required for our association to ensure it remains at the forefront of hockey in NSW.

The field competitions have generally run very smoothly this year from minkeys, juniors, U17s and seniors, leading to some great hockey and lots of memories to be savoured by players and spectators alike. The indoor competitions have once again proved extremely popular with managing growth in participation and competitions being the challenge. We have hosted a number of state championships with the O55 Masters, Indoor U18s, U21s and Opens. All of this from our sport has promoted participation, development of our elite players, community involvement and active lifestyles in line with the Australian Sports Commissions goals for sport.

The association has continued to achieve at all levels with success from our juniors, opens and veterans in both field and indoor championships. Though not quite up to results from past years, the continuation of these results reinforces the playing strength in the Illawarra.

Golden Goal 2013 was the tagline created by Craig Nealon for the association’s logo this year. He must have had a premonition with those that watched or have seen the final of the Champions Trophy in Melbourne this year. The final, going to extra time with Illawarra player passing the ball to for an unforgettable tomahawk golden goal to win the championship.

The association was once again extremely proud of our Kookaburra’s and all State and National juniors, seniors and veterans, both field and indoor achievements this past year, with prospects of more to come.

Locally, a continuation of the introduction of technical officials (TO’s) beyond 1st and 2nd grade was trialled for all grades. Though not considered entirely successful with some clubs not meeting their commitments, overall it was an improvement on no game officials at all for these grades and leaves room for further improvement next season and beyond.

With the standard of umpiring continuing to be of some concern to players and clubs, we need to develop plans to improve this critical area for the enjoyment of all who play the game. Developing respect for umpires and improving player behaviour towards umpires needs to be a focus if we are to grow and develop our umpiring base. Through the work of Craig Klaus, we have numerous junior umpires who are attaining accreditations and developing well. However, it is a challenge to have them transition into senior grade umpiring. I will repeat what I said last year. We need strong leadership in this area to ensure we can deliver on the needed improvements while making the task less onerous and more enjoyable for those who gratefully take on this role each week. We need to all look at what we can do to ensure that those who play our game, can do so with fun and enthusiasm, while still maintaining a respectful competitive spirit.

After an extremely successful and distinguished international umpiring career, David Gentles retired this year and was also inaugurated into the Shellharbour City Council Hall of Fame. Well done David. Once rested, we look forward to him hopefully becoming more involved with the development of our local umpiring standards.

Once again a huge thankyou, for the efforts of all those involved in running our clubs and those that have put up their hand to assist with representative teams, officiating, event management and any other volunteer roles filled throughout the year. I look forward to your continued involvement in the game driven by your passion for hockey and the people involved. Let’s focus on creating an environment in which all players can enjoy playing, with

family and friends watching our sport being impressed by the respect shown for all involved in the game.

This past year the Board welcomed new members David Rieck, Director Development, David Sharpe, Director Competitions and Graham Body, Director Planning which provided further injection of skills and enthusiasm.

All members of the Board have contributed significantly within their portfolio’s to the smooth running of the association. John Pemberton in his multiple roles has remained the glue that holds it all together with special mention of Wes Johnston who has devoted significant time and effort in researching and documenting the background discussion papers and potential options for an amalgamated future. Thankyou to all current Board Members for their investment of time and commitment to the running of all activities associated with Illawarra District Hockey.

We are very grateful for the continued support from our sponsors, the Illawarra Credit Union, F-H-E, The Builders Club and Peoplecare Eyes & Teeth (previously Smart Eyes). We look forward to continuing to work with our sponsors in delivering on benefits for them and for our game of hockey.

There have been some major items this past year which will shape our structure and relationship to all our stakeholders. These include:

 Future of Hockey in the Illawarra workshop held in February 2013, leading to Steering Group being formed and recommendations presented on 13 September 2013.  Progressing amalgamation with IWHA and possibly SCWHA  Hockey NSW … • Association reform and criteria for association compliance with Hockey NSW by February 2015 • Regional Coaching Coordinator • Association Sustainability Review

Hockey is one national sport that can truly be described as playable by the whole family. It is one of the unique parts of our sport that helps define our hockey fraternity. We need to leverage this to our advantage, especially when competing for participation with other sports. We need to attract and retain players, officials and administrators to ensure the future growth and development of our sport in the Illawarra. One way to maximise this opportunity is for hockey in the Illawarra to be on the “same page” working together with one voice for hockey in the Illawarra.

This is an exciting and challenging time with significant issues and opportunities over the coming year which will define our association’s future.

Garry Bull President

Administration Report There were a number of positive and a few negative matters to report from the season past.

2013 was my 14th season providing part time administrative support for IDHI and it is still a pleasure working with all of the hockey fraternity. Hockey is the family game and I appreciate the support from so many people each year.

Of great importance to local hockey was the 'Future of Hockey in the Illawarra' workshop held on the 3rd February and the subsequent steering group meetings and consequent group report and recommendations to be discussed by both the IDHI and IWHA members in the near future.

The workshop gave the opportunity for club and association representatives to provide input on the future direction of local hockey. Thanks to independent facilitator Greg Knight and HNSW's Tony Mestrov and Lauren Woods for their expertise.

The steering group of IDHI (Wayne Billett, Graham Body, Wesley Johnston, Craig Nealon) and IWHA (Sue Bessell, Marian Grant, Sally Johnston, Kirsty Roth) appointees along with independent member Keith Wallace (Department of Sport and Recreation) have provided a number of options for the future. It's now up to both associations to discuss the recommendations and agree on a blueprint for future developments for hockey in the Illawarra.

It has been another outstanding year on the representative scene. Note below the large number of Australian and NSW representative players including Kookaburra's Kieran Govers and Tristan White. Read about the dominance of the Illawarra Indoor teams in their state championships. Both the seniors and masters teams provided pleasing results in their age championships. All players and officials should be justifiably proud of these achievements.

The first grade competition is of a high standard as the recent final series highlighted. Unfortunately Bowral could not field a side once again in 2013. In addition, the Robertson team could not come to an agreement with the Southern Highlands HA and played as an independent team in the Illawarra first grade competition. Hopefully future discussions will see several teams from SHHA in the 2014 competition.

There were concerns about the format of the lower grade competitions. Each of the seconds to fifths competition were a six team format; however, teams did not have a continuous flow of teams and it was extremely difficult to organise all club teams to play at the same venues each week. Sadly the Cavaliers dropped out of the 5th grade competition - they had been a continuous member of IDHI competitions since 1976.

Unfortunately the Coaching Directors position was unfilled for the season and there were also a number of complaints about umpiring and technical officials amongst the lower grades. IDHI will hold a officials workshop in December with the aim to produce a plan to develop improved hockey officiating for the future.

The management of the Shellharbour Hockey Centre at Croom Road was finally resolved after many months of planning and Illawarra Hockey Inc. are now managing the affairs of the centre.

IDHI organised a very successful Over 55s championships at the Illawarra Credit Union complex. A Call to Arms weekend to raise awareness of men's cancer issues was held in collaboration with the O55s matches and the local grade matches and $2500 was donated to the NSW Cancer Council.

The ICU Complex now has a functions license (with Wes Johnston as licensee) and patrons can enjoy a drink as well as the facilities in the 'bullpen'. In addition, IHI is now accredited by the Australian Drug Foundation Good Sports program.

Overall the IDHI competitions continued to run smoothly and without too much drama – obviously the main aim of the competitions.

Many thanks to all of the Board members for their efforts over the hockey season. IDHI have a very experienced and stable Board. Their hard work and experience are invaluable for the successful functioning of local Hockey.

Special mention to president Garry Bull and financial director Wes Johnston. Their hockey work loads are enormous and they deserve special praise for their efforts. Both have made major contributions to numerous HNSW matters over the season - Wes in particular with assistance in implementing the new HockeyNet database system.

Welcome to new Board members Dave Sharpe (competition), David Rieck (development) and Graham Body (planning). They have made valuable contributions to IDHI organisation in their first season. David organised a hugely successful junior development day on 27 April where 150 junior players benefited greatly from the coaching of Tristan White and our NSW AHL stars.

My thanks also go out to those hard working club officials who made my job easier with their support. They are the backbone of the club’s administration and I urge all other players to get in and have a go to support these club officials. In particular I thank Daryl Elliott and Keith Maywald from Albion Park seniors and Jan Massie from Albion Park juniors; Tamara Thorburn from Flames; Brad Boon and Warren Gale from Dapto; Michael Hickey and Richard Heffernan from Fairy Meadow; Dave Brookfield from Kiama; Marcus Reed from University seniors and Wendy Condon from University juniors; and Peter Miotto and Dave Rieck from Wests. Keep up the good work.

Thanks to Jason Collett for all aspects of Croom Rd organisation, John O'Donnell as Judiciary Chairman and Allan Went for his continued role as Public Officer. Amie Simmons did a fine job as Minkey co-ordinator. Thanks also to the Southern Highlands HA President Narelle Evans and administrator Paul Sloan for their assistance with all matters relating to SHHA.

Thank you to all officials of the Illawarra Women’s Hockey Association and to Kym McDonald and her staff in the canteens at Lindsay Maynes and Croom rd. Their hard work is greatly appreciated.

Thanks to Gary Davis from University HC. Gary has updated the list of senior major and minor premiership winners during his research into the 50 year history of the UOWHC. Gary's comprehensive lists are included in the past winners section of the report.

If I have missed someone who I should not have – Thanks for your help.

Sponsorship The IDHI is very appreciative of the continuing support of its sponsors - the ILLAWARRA CREDIT UNION as MAJOR SPONSOR (past 15 years for the IDHI and more recently the major sponsor of ALL Illawarra Hockey competitions (Men’s & Women’s Field & Indoor) as well as the Illawarra Hockey Stadium); ILLAWARRA MASTER BUILDERS CLUB as Junior Hockey Sponsor (past 14 years); BLOOMS THE CHEMIST who continued as Junior Development sponsor (2nd year) and FHE in their 8th year as Equipment Sponsor (and Rob Davis has also been of great assistance supplying clothing to the representative teams and Hockey fraternity in general via the FHE Shop at the Illawarra Credit Union Hockey Complex).

SMART EYES OPTICAL had been Umpires Sponsor over the past 5 seasons. They sold their business to PEOPLECARE who continued the umpires sponsorship. Many thanks to Anita Mulrooney for her assistance.

It is very important that the IDHI, affiliated clubs and all players support ALL sponsors. Remember that the IDHI sponsorship monies lower the cost for all players playing in the IDHI competitions.

Media The includes weekly results on Mondays with stories from the first grade matches and junior results on Thursdays. My thanks to Mike Gandon & Mitch Cohen for including the stories and results in the paper and to Terry Ashby who wrote the first grade match stories for the Mercury.

WIN TV did provide regular Hockey coverage during the season for 1.30 pm matches at ICU and University Fields. Unfortunately the local Rugby League and Soccer matches gain WIN TV priority for later Sunday afternoon filming.

Tony De Souza once again wrote a weekly column in the Advertiser – Tony has been doing so for the past 12 years. Tony’s stories were always informative and accurate and were very much appreciated by the hockey fraternity.

First grade results could also be heard on media associated with Southern Highlands News, Prime TV, Wave FM and Southern Cross Broadcasting. Thanks to the contacts at these sources for promoting hockey.

Craig Nealon produced many episodes of local Field and Indoor Hockey on “iHockeyTV”, which you can visit either on YouTUBE, or as a free podcast found in the iTunes Store. These Webisodes are very popular with a very wide audience.

Web Site All local hockey data (IDHI & IWHA) is now included in the new Hockey Hockey Net site. The site includes all competition and registration data as well as sponsors information, links to all club and other hockey web sites, IDHI Resource Library and ihockey TV clips. All players register themselves on Hockey Net and clubs can administer their player registration details.

Wes Johnston uploaded the majority of data on the site. Many thanks to Wes - his expertise and organisation are very much appreciated.

John Pemberton continued to collect hard copy results sheets and manually enter all match data into the system and transfer the results to the ihockey site. The data entry on Hockey Net is time consuming yet IMG are continually modifying and improving their product.

Contact details and links to all local hockey clubs as well as all the HockeyNet data can be found at www.ihockey.com.au. Many thanks to Craig Nealon who updates and maintains the ihockey site.

IDHI Golf Day 82 golfers enjoyed the excellent course and facilities at Port Kembla Golf Club on Thursday 22 August for the 14th IDHI Golf Day.

The event was a 4 person ambrose with a shotgun start. Cost was $60 each for which the players received the round of golf, drinks on the course, lunch during the round and dinner after the game during the presentation. The clubs were required to gain a number of sponsors ($400 per hole) or a group of four golfers. Companies very generously donated over 100 prizes for the various events as well as the raffle. The IDHI raised over $1500 from the Golf Day from the sponsorship and raffle proceeds. In addition, clubs that gained a hole sponsor were reimbursed for their efforts ($900 in total). Many thanks to the clubs that

supported this very important IDHI Fundraiser.

Nett winners were the University Rec & Aquatic Centre team. Runners up were Mike Russell's group followed by Danny Shipp's group. Gross winners were the Wests Illawarra Leagues team followed by Ken Gorman's group and the Lakeline Butchery team. Nearest the pins were won by Callum Mayo and Paul Van Emieren. Drive and Pitch winner was Luke Potter and the longest Drive was that of Kurt Miller.

Hole Sponsors (in order of their hole) were: Illawarra Credit Union, University Recreation and Aquatic Centre, Illawarra Master Builders. FHE Hockey Supplies, Jones & Associates Dentists, Dapto Leagues Club, Lakeline Butchery, Specialised Automotive Services, Albion Park RSL, Wollongong Ministorage, Petstock, PM Woods & Associates Solicitors, Diskray Pty Ltd, Wests Illawarra Leagues Club and Blooms the Chemist. Many thanks for your support.

The IDHI is very appreciative of the following companies who have generously donated items as prizes for the golf competitions and for the raffle – Crinis Fruits, Crown West Cellars, Diskray Pty Ltd, Entertainment Distribution Company, FHE Hockey Supplies, Illawarra Golf Range, Jones & Associates Dentists, Starshots Experience & University Recreation and Aquatic Centre.

Presentations The Illawarra Junior Hockey presentations were held at Illawarra Credit Union Fields after the Junior Grand Finals on Saturday 7 September. Major Premiers were awarded their perpetual and individual trophies in each of the U11, U13 & U15 competitions; Wests Illawarra won the Club Championship trophy. The Under 17 presentations were made after their grand final on Wednesday 26 June.

100 people attended the presentation night at the Master Builders Club on Friday 30 August - the Friday night before the semi-finals.

Special guests included HNSW President Larry Maher, IWHA President Elaine Carr, Kookaburras Kieran Govers & Tristan White, IDHI Life Members, sponsors and various Friends of Illawarra Hockey. Ticket price of $33 provided a 3 course dinner and 2 drinks tickets. Many thanks to Bec Goodman from the Builders for her assistance. The meal was excellent receiving favourable comments from many attendees. Craig Nealon did a fine job as always as MC and produced an excellent slide show of the award winners and also from his ihockeyTV clips. Highlight of the evening was a chat with Kieran (with assistance from Tristan) about his international experiences.

Awards were also made to team and individual award winners as well as various Australian & NSW representatives. Jan Massie was the winner of the Administration Appreciation Award for her contribution to Illawarra Hockey over the season.

The presentations finished earlier than normal which allowed all present to chat about our favourite winter (and now for many summer) past time.

Competition Report The competition this year in juniors featured 39 competing teams. Nine in Under 17s, 11 in Under 11s, 10 in Under 13s and nine in Under 11s. Our Minkey competition continues to grow giving all young hockey players the chance to enter the game under the watchful eye of their supporters. The men’s competition featured 31 teams with seven teams contesting 1st grade and six teams in each grade from 2nd to 5th grade.

The junior competition continues to grow with Wests and Albion Park providing two teams in most age divisions. Once again the competition split in A and B divisions halfway through the competition providing an opportunity for all to compete at a level suitable for their skills. A change in format for these growing age divisions has been suggested by some clubs and will be examined in the off season.

The Under 17 competition featured nine teams. Unfortunately Shoalhaven were unable to fill a team for the 2013 season. The Under 15 Illawarra team again filled a position in the competition providing them and their coach with valuable game practice.

Once again the imbalance of teams from a variety of senior men’s clubs worked against the draw cycle and meant that many clubs were not able to play all their teams at the one venue. It also meant that due to these restrictions some teams had to play against each other in the space of a few weeks. A review of the competition structure is again being examined in the off season to account for some of these anomalies.

Thanks to the Board of Directors for their support, but in particular Wesley Johnston who provided the expertise in the development of all of the draws and to John Pemberton who reminded me of the tasks I had to fulfil as Competition Director.

David Sharpe Competition Director

Minkey Hockey 2013 It was a successful year for Minkeys with 15 teams entered throughout the two age groups. There were five teams in our Under 7s and 10 teams in our Under 9s. Gerringong joined the U9s comp this year and were solid in their performance, the Flames dropped from our U9s comp but remained competitive in U7s. All teams played well and had a go with fun being the emphasis.

Numbers are shown in the table below: Team Total Players 2013 Total Players 2012 Notes for 2013 Wests 19 26 U7s = 9 U9s = 10 University 16 9 U7s = 7 U9’s= 9 Flames 7 14 U7s= 7 Fairy Meadow 20 6 U9s = 10,10 Dapto 12 14 U9’s = 12 Albion Park 36 27 U7s = 7,7 U9s = 8,8,6 Sea Cliff 12 17 U9s = 12 Gerringong 8 N/A U9s = 8 Total Players 130 113

Numbers are up this year aided by the addition of Gerringong team. However some clubs were down on numbers others. Some clubs with multiple teams did struggle to fill a side and were often borrowing players; however, this was generally not a problem with teams willing to lend players. This also helped promote a sense of good sportsmanship in our young players with the onus being on everyone getting a game and not on who they were playing for.

To my knowledge the format for this year was a pilot and seemed to generate a mixed reaction from coaches and parents. Under 7s playing 2 x 15min games and Under 9s, 3x 15min games (quarter field) or 2x20 minute games (half field). Many thought the 3x 15minutes back to back was a bit much and could be looked at for next season There is a feeling this needs further tweaking to get the balance right.

The half field games are beneficial for the Under 9s and would enhance their skills if they could play these more often. Bunching up is always a problem for them on the ¼ fields and then trying to get them to spread out when they go to the ½ fields.

There has been feedback received throughout the year that the Minkey season is too long and that the kids become tired and disinterested.

Indoor games proved popular once again. We had a number of these this year and parent/coach/carer support is vital in assisting with set up, without this the indoor games wouldn’t go ahead. Thanks to all that were able to lend a few minutes to assist.

All things being equal, both Carnivals went well despite the lack of sportsmanship displayed by a select few adults both on the sideline and on the field, extremely disappointing that this behaviour was displayed in front of the children. Thank you to Wes for organising Certificates and Vouchers and Sarah Pickering for her help and support.

On a personal note……. Being a rookie isn’t always easy but there are many that made me feel right at home and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the Committee, Garry Bull, Wes Johnston, Sarah Pickering, John Pemberton, the many wonderful coaches, parents and especially the children for welcoming me and making my rookie year a most enjoyable one. The offers of support and words of encouragement were plenty and I appreciate this sincerely. You are all what makes hockey wonderful!

It was a pleasure to run Minkeys this year. I will gladly take the role on next year; however, there are a few dates I am unavailable. I would appreciate support and assistance in seeking out a successor to transition into the role over the next 12 months and to fill in for my absences. Ideally I would like to see it shared amongst a couple of people so that there is ample coverage and knowledge around the grounds.

Amie Simmons Minkey Coordinator 2013

Development This was my first year as Development Director and I found the year went so quickly and we got only a few development and training session delivered throughout the year. There were not as many sessions with the younger kids as I'd have hoped to arrange.

The first program for the year saw the second year of the Junior High Performance Program. We had seven sessions for our elite U12, U13 and U14 boys and girls with 30 players and 4 goal keepers. The girls were coached by Wesley Johnston and the boys were coached by

David Rieck. Goalkeepers were trained by Bob Hughes. Barry Reid attended all sessions and ran individual sessions with the boys and the girls.

The second program was the Development Day for the U11s and U13s.This was a 2 hour session run on a Saturday morning when the two age groups had a bye. We had our local State and National rep players coach the kids in six groups across two fields. We had 80 U11s and 75 U13s including 6 keepers.

Coaches were Tristan White, Kurt Ogilvie, Josh Walters, Nathan Ackroyd, Scott Govers, Blake Govers and Jack Hayes. Max Hughes, Rhys Castle and Mitch Galea were great assistant coaches also. There was good feedback from parents and the kids were talking about it for a few weeks.

The final program was the U11 Boys representative program. We invited all U11 boys to two training sessions with the opportunity for all of the boys to attend a Moorebank U11s carnival. Unfortunately one training session was washed out and the U11s Carnival was the same day as the U13 Tri-series. One team attended the carnival and this was a good introduction into rep hockey for half of the boys.

Finally I found the kids that attended any of the sessions were keen to learn and were asking if there was anything else being run as they would like more training sessions. The hard thing is the kids are keen but it was very hard to get interested coaches volunteering to assist. I find this a failure of not having the Coaching Director's position filled. I found myself running and coaching these programs instead of planning and handing over to separate coaches to run. I enjoyed doing both but it just meant I was not able to plan further sessions.

The season started with the very controversial decision by FIH to introduce a rule change that meant players were not allowed to touch the ground with their glove hand during a trap or tackle. This caused a huge amount of angst among our teams and fortunately even though the rule was applied during the first state championship it was soon removed after pressure from European players.

In terms of teams, the competition is limited by available court time at the ICU stadium at Unanderra. In spite of this ongoing issue, team numbers remain the same or slowly grow each year.

For 2012, the number of teams in each division were - A division 6 teams; B 10, C 9, U15s 9, U13s 10 and U11s 10 teams.

The aim of the Indoor committee is to keep costs as low as possible so we always budget for break even and aim to keep the costs per game around the same each year - 2012 was no exception.

Summary As is evidenced from the state selections in every age group and our state championships results, Illawarra continues to be the leader in Indoor Hockey in NSW. The main reason for this dominance is our long tradition of leading edge coaching of our juniors for more than 10 years and the competitive nature of our competitions allowing our players to develop and improve their skills each week.

It was another incredible season for Illawarra Indoor hockey at the state championships. Our enviable record being: U13 A division runners up U15 A division state champions U17 A division state champions Open Men's state champions and runners up Men's Masters state champions

Nothing happens without organisation and the indoor committee has worked tirelessly for many years to ensure the smooth running of our competitions and the development of our representative teams.

A massive thank you to the volunteer indoor committee for their dedication and promotion of local indoor hockey. Also a big thank you to all the extra people who helped the committee in various roles such as Dave Rieck, Bob Hughes, Jonathan Castle and many others.

Each year we run an U11 invitational carnival in February. The carnival almost did not go ahead this season but the demand by the other associations was so great that it had to run. The carnival was developed by Ern Orth (with other helpers) and we hope it will continue for years to come.

Planning Report The role of planning director has focused on two areas of hockey in the Illawarra for 2013. 1) Involvement on the Future of Hockey in the Illawarra Steering Committee. 2) Addressing issues concerned with officiating competition matches in regard to Technical Officials.

Item 1 The 'Future of Hockey in the Illawarra' Steering Committee was derived from a workshop held February 3rd 2013 at which both IDH and IWHA life members, officials, clubs and interested parties attended to map out a plan to ensure Illawarra hockey was addressing both strategic and tactical considerations to the benefit of hockey in our region.

Specifically the terms of reference were to: “develop and present options and recommendations for a future structure for hockey in the Illawarra based on increased collaboration.”

The steering committee comprised four members from IDH: Wes Johnston, Graham Body, Wayne Billett, Craig Nealon and, four members from IWHA: Kirsty Roth, Marian Grant, Sally Johnston, Sue Bessell. There was an independent non-voting member of the committee from the Dept of Sport & Recreation, Mr. Keith Wallace. He provided information and advice to the committee based upon his experience and expertise in previous contexts relating the work the Steering Committee was engaged in over the period of its deliberations. Many thanks to Keith for his input.

Over the 3 months this committee met issues relating to amalgamation between IDH and IWHA was considered, as per the brief from the initial joint workshop and a report prepared with a series of recommendations to both IDH and IWHA.

As planning director I wish to thank all those associated with the 'Future of Hockey in the Illawarra' Steering Committee who engaged in a thorough and professional treatment of the issues and recommendations. All resolutions regarding recommendations were carried unanimously by the steering committee.

The Future of Hockey in the Illawarra: Steering Group Report 13th September 2013 was subsequently released to all clubs of the IDH and IWHA for their consideration towards an amalgamation between those two associations.

Item 2 Technical Officials, their role, accreditation, organization and authority is an ongoing dilemma for all clubs. The nature of the role;

• Ensure that the match card is filled out correctly and legibly before the commencement of the game • Ensure that players are suitably attired and have correct, unique numbers that are consistent with the record shown on the card • Record goals, cards, significant incidents and injuries on the match card • Maintain the match time keeping - stopping and starting the game, timing of player suspensions etc • If asked , assist the umpires with 1,2,3, points for player of the year award • Assist media representatives to gain information about the match being played • Control player substitutions at the half way line • Ensure match cards are properly signed and certified at the end of the game • Where necessary, assist in controlling player discipline and provide advice to Illawarra Men's Hockey Inc by providing written advice on match cards • Arrange watering of fields and switching on of lights if requested by umpire

• When requested provide advice and recommendations to the Judiciary Committee

Is one in which the association needs to address formal accreditation requirements and mandatory match allocation by clubs.

The current practice of the home team supplying a technical official for round matches does not and has not this year adequately provided the kind of role performance as described above.

Likewise, during the finals’ series there is a need to have a larger pool of accredited, experienced, proficient and knowledgeable technical officials to draw upon for the conduct of those sets of matches to ensure the highest qualities of behavior and conduct are seen as a norm for our sport. And, as a carryover from our match rounds.

The issue of accreditation is a vexed one however this does need to be addressed in regard to technical officials (as well as all officiating personnel for hockey matches) to ensure our sport is seen to operate as a family friendly, safe, well governed and officiated sport.

Representative Teams Reports Senior State Championships – Newcastle – 8 to 10 June A Division: Nathan Ackroyd, Simon Beaton, Paul Counsell, Jack Hayes, Nick Jennings, Alex Mackay, Shane McLeish, Alex Montgomery, Heath, Kurt and Flynn Ogilvie, Josh Walters, Tristan White. Manager: Peter Hayes

Illawarra Opens A Division team finished a credible second - beaten by Sydney in the final. We probably dominated a lot of the game and had a heap more corners but due to the horrible state of the Newcastle surface we were not able to get a decent shot on target. All three fields were missing the circle lines so there was a ditch where the lines used to be which stopped our flickers getting a decent shot off even if our trappers did manage to stop one dead.

The final went through to drop off where we had a player yellow carded which meant we had to play the final few minutes 7 v 6. We managed to hold them out until the final 24 seconds which saw a dubious dive in the circle rewarded with a penalty stroke for them which they converted.

We managed to get through the whole weekend with no injuries bar a hamstring strain to Alex Mackay which kept him out of day two.

A number of players were late withdrawals from the second team and we feel that only one team should be sent to the state championships. Another option could be sending the U17 rep team as the seconds team i.e. players for the A team in the future. We had Kurt, Heath, Flynn, Tristan, Josh & Nathan selected in the AHL squad; Paul, Alex Montgomery, Nick, Alex Mackay & Jack in the 21s squad and Alex Mackay and Nick selected in the Opens Country side.

Development Team in B Division: Peter Cowan, Alexz Crawford, Callum Debruyn, Zac Duncan, Jakob Hill, Matt Jollife, James Martin, Nathan Mitchell, David Reid, Jonathan Reid, Steve Tuddenham, Abe Unicomb.

The Development Side competed in Division Two. We had 9 Illawarra players and filled the rest of the team with other association players after we had a few players pull out at the last moment.

The team played well even overall. We started with two very bad games both 8 nil losses to Sydney and Tamworth. The players gelled better after some game time together and the match vs Southern Highlands ended up with a 2 nil loss. The next game was against Grafton and we had an issue with the TO when taking off the goal keeper and the other team scored. The decisions was then changed and the game continued but we ended up losing 3 - 2. we played on Sunday morning for relegation against Crookwell. we lost Alexz with shin splints so we were down to 13 players but they played their hearts out and won 3 - 2 which kept the Development team in Division 2.

I would like to thank Barry Reid for all his assistance with sourcing players and also agreeing to coach the boys while I managed.

Under 17 State Championships – Macarthur - 3 to 5 May A Division I have had the honour and privilege of coaching the majority of these players at some stage throughout their careers at either club level or indoor. 2013 is the first year that I have coached an Illawarra outdoor representative team and it has been an unforgettable experience, which has allowed me to learn new skills and grow as a coach.

This year the team was a blend of experience, relative inexperience and youth. From a coach’s point of view, the selection process was extremely difficult this year due to the talent within the region, however it meant that we would be taking very strong and competitive A & B division teams in the hope of winning the state championships in our respective divisions. Our games were hard fought with some wins coming easier than others. We won all round games and went into the finals with confidence and form on our side. The team did all they could to cement first place in the pool and in the process, struck fear into the opposition’s eyes.

The final was played against a very solid team and we all knew it would take something special to bring the trophy home. Opportunities and general play just didn’t fall our way and Tamworth was in a commanding position. Nevertheless the commitment and persistence shown by the team was evident throughout the entire game. Their “never say die” attitude was the most pleasing aspect of the entire tournament. They battled against adversity and continued to fight until the very end. They simultaneously showed their true character as a

mature and passionate team and for that I am extremely satisfied. All in all I cannot fault the team performance both on and off the field as their commitment far exceeded what was asked of them. They should be commended for their conduct and the way they represented Illawarra over the weekend. I have no doubt the future of Illawarra hockey is in great hands.

There are a few people I would like to thank for their efforts in making this experience an enjoyable one. Even before the team was picked, Janet worked tirelessly to make sure everything was organized for us. I can’t thank her enough for everything she did to get us to the championships. The parents were extremely supportive and that made the role of coach significantly easier.

Finally I would like to sincerely thank Bruce for all his hard work. I have had numerous encounters with him and his professionalism is inspiring to not only myself but also the players. He was extremely organized in regards to his responsibilities in addition to liaising with parents and officials where needed. The entire team, myself included, has the utmost respect for him and he was a very valuable manager who cannot be replicated.

Results: Parkes: 5-1 (Win), Macarthur: 3-0 (Win), Lithgow: 5-0 (Win), Newcastle: 5-2 (Win), Sydney: 3-2 (Win), Tamworth: 3-6 (Loss)

The following players were selected in the U16s All Schools team to participate in the Australian All Schools Championships held in Hobart, Tasmania from the August 17th to August 24th: Brady Anderson*, Jack Donovan*, Mitchell Galea, Callum Mackay, Josh Mayo*, Thomas Miotto*, Kieren Richards*

The following players were selected in the 2014 U18 Mens Squad: Brady Anderson*, Peter Cowan, Jack Donovan*, Blake Govers, Max Hughes, Josh Mayo*, Thomas Miotto*, Daniel Olsen, Cameron Parsons, Kieren Richards* *Players selected in both squads Congratulations to the selected players!

Player Analysis Brady Anderson: The pocket-rocket up front that played extremely well and spearheaded a lot of our attack. He is dangerous inside the attacking 25 and can make the most of attacking opportunities.

Peter Cowan: Our dangerous and speedy striker who could turn half a chance into an attacking or scoring opportunity. His determination and effort is a valuable asset. He conducted himself extremely well whilst playing on the field, which highlights his growing maturity.

Jack Donovan: A quick and skilful young man who plays well in any position you put him in and is a very valuable player to have on any team. When he finds the confidence to back himself he creates endless attacking opportunities and is a handful for the opposition defence.

Blake Govers: A strong, reliable and skilful player who is extremely valuable and can change the game’s momentum. His drag flicking ability is a priceless asset and was lethal on penalty corners.

Max Hughes: Arguably the best goalkeeper for his age and beyond. His performance was outstanding and was an integral part of our solid defence.

Josh Mayo: Played very well and was the powerhouse at the back, which resulted in an extremely good defensive record. He also controlled players very well and efficiently directed them to where they needed to be.

Thomas Miotto: He was a solid player who consistently performed. His effort was outstanding and vision was superb. Very dangerous attacking wise and defensively carried out his role effectively.

Daniel Olsen: Always a solid player and contributed to the strong defensive effort. His variety of passing styles allowed him to be used as an attacking option to produce lots of attacking opportunities and advancements.

Cameron Parsons ( c ): Cool, calm and collected. The way he conducted himself as captain and rallied the troops is commendable and a testament to his maturity. A very valuable player for his on-field skills as well as his leadership qualities.

Kieren Richards: A very strong player who played great all over the park. Kieren really stepped up and showed his ability. His versatility gave us numerous options and his reliability is second to none.

Callum Mayo: Cal played well as an inside forward and always gave 110% to every task he was given. Very unlucky not to be selected in the squad, however he is to be commended on his performance during the championship.

Patrick Everett: A very versatile player who saw himself in a variety of attacking positions. Being able to play anywhere made him a valuable member of the team.

Callum Mackay: Unfortunately Callum incurred an injury in the week leading up to the championships therefore rendering him not 100%. Nevertheless his determination was admirable and saw him take the field and contribute to team whilst still pushing through the pain.

Connor Scard: His effort was outstanding and always gave it 110%. He carried out the task at hand and was extremely versatile.

Mitchell Galea: Mitch is a player who does the simple things very well and then looks to build on them. He is dangerous in attack and linked in extremely well with strikers as well as the midfielders.

Development Team in C Division The team was made up with 14 players from the Illawarra area and one from Grafton – Alick O’Dell. Coach: Lauri Nyhrinen, Assistant Coach: Jonathon Castle, Manager Kellie Jolliffe.

Before the competition - As a manager I liked the email that was sent with things that needed to be done for the timeline leading up to the competition and by whom. This was very beneficial for a first time manager. Despite many efforts for the boys to train together due to other competition commitments this was not able to happen for all the sessions that were planed. This made it difficult for the completion of documentation that was needed to be completed by a certain time.

During the competition - Despite being on the sand pitch at Narellan, I am please to say that the team was able to play well despite playing on water pitches in the local competition. The team had to have many discussions about the style of hockey to play as the team would attempt plays that they would normally be able to complete successfully on a water pitch but it was not successful on the sand.

The 3rd division pool was made up of four teams – Illawarra, Orange, Wagga Wagga and Nepean.

The scores were as follows Illawarra vs Orange 3 -0 Illawarra vs Nepean 4-0 Illawarra vs Wagga Wagga 1 -2 SF 1 Illawarra vs Orange 2-2 Grand Final – Illawarra vs Wagga Wagga 3-2

The final was won in extra time (1st part) almost on the half time change over. Goal Scorers Sam Lackersteen, Phil McGeechin and Zac Nyrhinen The team also won the “Play of the Whistle” award for Div 3. Congrats to all the team

Under 15 State Championships – Orange - 31 May to 2 June Team: Cody Bain; Thomas Condon; Josh Davies; Luke Downey; Patrick Everett; Ben Hayman; Callum Mackay (C); Kyle Michels; Zac Nyrhinen; William Orth; Luke Pearce; Daine Richards; Hayden Welsh; Josh Wright-Smith. Coach Chris Richards. Manager Wendy Condon.

Seeded : Division 1, Pool A. Final Result : Finished 7th. State Squad Selections : Callum Mackay; Daine Richards; Patrick Everett; Thomas Condon; Josh Davies

Match Details : Game 1 : v Macarthur Result : 1-2 loss Goal Scorer : Daine Richards In this game Illawarra dominated, but did not capitalise. Many chances not converted. Under pressure, some players abandoned game plan and reverted to individual play.

Game 2 : v Central Coast Result : 1-1 draw Goal Scorer : Patrick Everett A much better performance with the team playing as a unit. Defensively, Illawarra very strong.

Game 3 : v Goulburn Result : 9-0 win Goal Scorers : Zac Nyrhinen x 4; Patrick Everett x 3; Daine Richards; Ben Hayman Team continued to build on previous game and played wonderful, positive hockey. Started the game strongly and did not lose focus. Attack and defence both strong as players worked together.

Game 4 : v Sydney Result : 1-2 loss Goal Scorer : Patrick Everett An extremely close game. Unfortunately, questionable umpiring rewarded Sydney with a goal. This proved to be a turning point in a very even game. Illawarra played a very strong game, executing game strategy well to shut down Sydney. Short corner defence was outstanding, with Sydney unable to convert their many chances. (Note : short corner defence extremely effective throughout all games).

Illawarra finished 4th in Pool A. Played Lithgow in play-off for 7th and 8th Position.

Game 5 : v Lithgow Result : 4-2 win Goal Scorers : Daine Richards x 2; Zac Nyrhinen; Callum Mackay Illawarra found it difficult to ‘lift’ after disappointment of missing out on Semi Finals. As game progressed, team momentum improved with Illawarra finishing the clearly stronger team. Note : The two finalists were Sydney and Central Coast. Illawarra could match these teams. Illawarra can take pride in the knowledge they convincingly beat Sydney and Central Coast in a pre-championship carnival.

Conclusion : As the championship progressed the team went from strength to strength under the guidance of coach Chris Richards. Chris was so impressive with his game tactics. He

studied the game structure of all opponents and designed strategies, which enabled Illawarra to be extremely competitive. Chris’s positive talk to the team, and to individuals, ensured the continued improvement of the team. Training sessions prior to the Championship were extremely beneficial and resulted in vastly improved skills, knowledge and team bonding. Every player improved and walked away from the Championships a better hockey player.

Additional Comments : Information submitted to NSW Hockey: It was very disappointing to find the team list submitted to NSW Hockey was incorrect. An additional player was included. All shirt numbers listed were incorrect (these were sent to IDH when I was given the shirts weeks before championship). The incorrect numbers caused problems. Errors were highlighted to officials at Managers Meeting, but since we had an early game, NSW Hockey could not adjust their records in time. The Selectors were not given the new information and they had great difficulty identifying our players in the first game and had to seek clarification after half time.

Accommodation Arrangements: Players staying with families at one motel worked very well. Boys could get plenty of rest, being under parent supervision. They also had ample opportunity to bond. Families mixed well and tended to dine together outside the official team dinner. It was unfortunate two families decided to stay away from rest of team.

Moorebank Carnival: IDH organisation needs to be improved. Despite requests to clarify financial payment and the naming of an umpire (registration form indicated IDH would send an umpire) over a month before carnival, information was very difficult to obtain. When IDH decided not to send an umpire, the carnival organisers were not informed. I was extremely embarrassed when I checked-in with officials who had not received any notification from IDH. In regard to payment, it needs to be made clear to parents that they will have to pay $20 on the carnival day, rather than this cost being included in the final invoice. Parents were under the impression that, once the team was named, all expenses (training, carnivals) would be invoiced.

Wendy Condon Manager

Under 13 Boys State Championships – Wagga Wagga - 11 to 14 July Team: Samuel Airey, Higginson Blaik, Tom David (GK), Toby Jennings, Tayne Joliffe, Saige McAteer, Jake Rieck, Jake Sheppard, Luke Taylor, Connor Tuddenham, Matt Tyler, Joel Westblade and Sam Wright-Smith. (Caelan Smith withdrew Injured)

The Illawarra U13A team attended the State Championship. They performed OK finishing 7th in A Division. Looking back they started slowly building on their team work and improved their structure with each game they played.

Results of matches: Tamworth 2-1 loss Macarthur 6-3 loss Central Coast Jnrs 2-0 loss Far Nth Coast 1-0 win Goulburn 7-0 win

The team was selected and shortly after attended the Tri series matches with Sydney and Macarthur. We lost both matches but there were good for the teams development and helped Steve start to sort players into positions and start building combinations. They also attended the Goulburn Carnival where they made the Final losing to Orange 1-0. Several training sessions were held but more sessions were needed to work on set plays, short corner attack and defence. I'd recommend continuing with the Tri series matches and also looking into the carnival run in the Canberra 3 day carnival and could be good preparation for the State Championships.

Accommodation was very good, clean and close to the field and middle of town. This was the first time the U13s had stayed with their parents and found their own transport to get to and from the ground. it appeared to work well and I had no comments saying the previous arrangements of kids travelling by bus and staying as a team was a better arrangement.

One complaint was the families were not informed early enough if the accommodation arrangements were confirmed or if they needed to look for their own accommodation. Accommodation was not announced until the 2nd team was selected and both teams had equal opportunity to obtain a room with first in best dressed arrangement.

Connor Tuddenham and Higginson Blaik were selected in the NSW 13s squad and both made the U13s Development team.

Steve Tuddenham coach and David Rieck, manager.

Under 13 Development team Team: Prathamesh Agalgaonkar, Harrison Brooks, Ben Byron, Jack Dunn, Koby Fulton, Rory Hanrahan, Riley Harper, Daniel Mayo, Max Mulhearn, Chris Oates, Matt Walsh, Mitch Wells, Samuel Wright-Smith (moved to A team), Damon Harper (last minute inclusion)

Results: 0-15 v Grafton, 0-17 v Sydney, 1-1 v Parkes, 1-2 v Port Macquarie, 0-2 v Southern Highlands (relegated to C division)

Accommodation - Accommodation was clean and comfortable and there was a general purpose amenities room where parents could cook, eat meals together and catch-up after the days play – this room was utilised by most families over the 3 days. There were a couple of areas where the kids could play (generally hitting the hockey ball around to each other) without any concerns from parents, other guests or motel management. The motel didn’t have a restaurant, but there were a number of eateries within easy walking distance. All-in- all I’d say it was good value for money. Was not sufficient size to hold the entire group - Development Coach was forced to find an alternative.

Transport - Parents provided own transport. This seemed to work well and ensured that the boys had supervision.

General comments:  Selection process was disjointed with the boys being forced to "try out" multiple times.  Training costs should be covered by association or built into Illawarra fees - requesting/collecting payment each session is a problem.  The team really struggled on the sand surface, but played extremely well on the hybrid surface - important to get lots of practice on the surface the team will play on (inc lots of grass next year!)  Need more depth - our association was capable of producing a much stronger

development team. I think the clubs only put forward players thinking about the A team, but we actually have a place for their middle-of-the-road players and younger talent too - we need to actively promote the Illawarra B team through the clubs and potentially target individuals - we could have had conversations with each of the junior coordinators to drum up some interest.  One of our strongest development players was removed from the team the day before the championships to move into the A team, in order to replace a player that had been injured weeks before. I should have been in the loop at that point (not the afternoon before) - I could have at least tried to track down an appropriate replacement.  They ended up coming together reasonably well as a team (especially on the hybrid surface), but more "practice" would have been better (rather than just games) - especially if that practice was on the right surface. Need to dedicate more time to this and not rely on the mini-carnivals too much.  No equipment provided to the team by the association meant borrowing equipment from clubs (in the case of balls, cones, etc) and outright purchases by the manager (face masks because at that level hockey we believed they were a necessity).  Opportunity to be part of the coaching development session conducted by Hockey NSW was great.

Nathan Harper coach

Illawarra Under 11s Team: Kyle Fahey, Balin Munro, Luke Rieck, Rory Hanrahan, Josh McKinnon, Mitch Wells, Luke Potter, Jordan Lillie, Nathan Ballard, Sam Wright-Smith, Dilon Simmons, Bayden Simmons, Deon Hales, Ben Byron and Bailey Craft.

This year the U11s started a little differently to past few years to give as many kids some exposure to rep hockey.

All U11 players were invited to two training sessions and then all participated in a carnival at Moorebank. We sent one team when we aiming for two teams to attend. Unfortunately 4 or 5 boys were participating in the U13s Tri Series matches so did not have enough to send the two teams.

The team attended the carnival and all the boys enjoyed the experience. Missing 4 or 5 of our stronger boys the boys did well finishing 3rd in the pool.

Selections were then held and one team selected to attend two carnivals.

First carnival was at Sutherland and the boys played well. It was of course the usual story as we always seem to lose our first game at this carnival every year to a team we should beat. From there the boys worked well together getting themselves through to the semis by the narrowest of margins, equal on points but went through with a one goal difference advantage over the other team. We played Newcastle in semi and lost 1-0, a good score for the amount of defensive work the boys had to do.

The second carnival was at Macarthur. The boys won all of their games in the round matches except for the last game where we played Western (a combination of Bathurst, Lithgow, Orange, Dubbo etc). Western beat us about 5-0. We finished second in our pool and played Macarthur in the semi and dominated this game winning it and moving into Final against Western.

Western came out and played well but our boys lifted and were matching them. We had

more opportunities in the Final than in the round match. Unfortunately we lost 1-0 but it highlighted the improvement the boys have made over the few weeks of playing together.

I had several conversations with other associations about the Canberra Carnival for the U11s. This is a 3 day carnival and held on the June long weekend. It is something worth considering. Our parents were asked if they would have attended if asked and all said it would be something they would attend. It would mean we would organise the team earlier than we normally do.

I’d like to thank Paul Munro and Dave Simmons for coaching the kids at the carnivals. Thanks also to Jake Rieck who umpired at the carnivals. . David Rieck Coach

Umpire’s Report Senior Umpires Club allocated appointments continued to be used this season for 2nd to 5th Grade. There was some success with most clubs completing their allocations.

As the same as the previous season 1st Grade umpires were allocated, where possible as neutral umpires. All 1st Grade umpires have been helpful with advising their availability throughout the season.

The Final Series completed this year was successful, with some grades going into extra time. With the 1st Grade grand final being umpired by Brodie Billett and Tyson Street. This year in Fifth and Third Grade grand finals we decided to use some of our up and coming umpires. This appeared to be met with good response in most cases.

This year Clubs again some clubs appeared to struggle with paying umpires after each game.

There was one incident where the IDHI board was requested to handle a complaint about umpires. This was resolved with a further decision group to be completed in October 2013 for recommendations for the 2014 season.

The appointed Technical Officials for first and second grade appeared to be a success and definitely a success with the Final Series with TO’s being appointed throughout. Again this help immensely with the reserve umpire being freed to enable them to be more available to take over a game if required.

Junior Umpires The junior season started well with club allocated umpires but due to recognised umpires from other associations willing to umpire on a Wednesday night, games had to be allocated where appropriately to enable them to help with umpiring. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Todd Gilroy (SHHA) and Matt Pardy (MMHA) for their help and support throughout the U17s competition. The allocation of umpires for the U17s final series was successful with more experience umpires covering these games. The U17 Grand Final being umpired by Todd Gilroy and Brodie Billett. The Semi finals also enable us to use one of our most successful U17 Umpire Jack Adams.

U11s, U13s and U15s had two umpire coaches at the start of the season, with Brodie Billett and David Gentles advising umpires when available.

There were a few new umpires starting out this year, with an increase of young umpires willing to learn. Total approximate junior umpires for 2013 were 35 (this does not include senior umpires). These games were allocated appointments for each age group, using junior umpires who either played or were independent umpires and sometimes clubs were allocated games.

The finals were based on the umpire coaches’ recommendations on using junior umpires and umpires who represented Illawarra at state championships and carnivals. The final series were successful and standard of umpire was high in each game.

Our most improved junior umpires were Thomas Condon and Chloe Johnston after returning a successful under 13s Boys State Championship and Jack Adams successful again a reserve umpire for the Division 1 final at U15s Boys State Championships.

Over review of Junior Umpires this year Thomas Condon was our most successful umpire at U13 Boys State Championship umpiring the Division 1 final, being name the Junior Development Umpire of the Tournament and ranked 1 in NSW for that age Division.

This year we released two umpires to the IWHA for the U13s Girls State Championships, being Hayden Welsh and Matt Preeo to further their development.

Recommendation: A program needs to be set up to maintain and coach all interested umpires at both Senior and Junior levels. All umpires will need to be accredited through the HockeyEd system. Payments for umpires at local games to be reviewed.

HockeyEd Course: There was one Junior Umpire who had improved over the last 12 months and was up graded to Level 1 accreditation. There were new umpires assessed and passed for their Community accreditation.

Rules Discussion An informal rules discussion night was organised for both juniors and seniors to determine the individual’s interpretation of the rules and understanding of. This was not as successful as there were only two senior umpires and a small number of Juniors. After speaking with David Gentles it was recommended that the second rules night not go ahead.

Indoor Umpires Again we have had success with our umpires at Indoor who have gone to umpire at national level or being nominated as a reserve umpire for nationals. These umpires were Tyson Street (opens Nationals) Vicki Cowan (U21 Nationals) and Mungo Skyring (U15 Nationals). Junior Umpires for State age championships were Thomas Condon and Chloe Johnston (U13s), Max Hughes (U15s) and Skye Yeatman, Tiarne Petrovich and Mungo Skyring (U17s).

Unfortunately, in the 2012/2013 indoor season there was an incident that involved one of umpires that Hockey NSW had to take further steps. This was recommended to the IDHI Board who took appropriate steps.

Craig Klaus Umpires Director
