Original Research A CHECKLIST OF THE NON -A C A RINE A R A CHNIDS (CHELICER A T A : AR A CHNID A ) OF THE DE HOOP NA TURE RESERVE , WESTERN CA PE PROVINCE , SOUTH AFRIC A Authors: ABSTRACT Charles R. Haddad1 As part of the South African National Survey of Arachnida (SANSA) in conserved areas, arachnids Ansie S. Dippenaar- were collected in the De Hoop Nature Reserve in the Western Cape Province, South Africa. The Schoeman2 survey was carried out between 1999 and 2007, and consisted of five intensive surveys between Affiliations: two and 12 days in duration. Arachnids were sampled in five broad habitat types, namely fynbos, 1Department of Zoology & wetlands, i.e. De Hoop Vlei, Eucalyptus plantations at Potberg and Cupido’s Kraal, coastal dunes Entomology University of near Koppie Alleen and the intertidal zone at Koppie Alleen. A total of 274 species representing the Free State, five orders, 65 families and 191 determined genera were collected, of which spiders (Araneae) South Africa were the dominant taxon (252 spp., 174 genera, 53 families). The most species rich families collected were the Salticidae (32 spp.), Thomisidae (26 spp.), Gnaphosidae (21 spp.), Araneidae (18 2 Biosystematics: spp.), Theridiidae (16 spp.) and Corinnidae (15 spp.). Notes are provided on the most commonly Arachnology collected arachnids in each habitat. Langona warchalowskii n. sp., a new jumping spider from South Africa is described. Key words: arachnology, taxonomy, Salticidae, Langona, new species, Afrotropical Region The genus Langona SIMON, 1901 contains 33 species (Platnick 2007), 17 of them (including the type) were described originally from Africa. Formerly described species are very poorly known. A few of African species were redescribed by Hęciak & Pró- szyński 1983. Recently described African Langona species have good documentation (Hęciak & Prószyński 1983, PrócHnieWicz & Hęciak 1994, WesołoWska & russell- SMITH 2000, WesołoWska 2006). The genus may be separated from other Aelurillinae by toothless inner cheliceral margin. Colouration is not diagnostic, as members of Langona share characteristic stripped pattern with the majority of other Aelurillinae. More reliable characters are visible in the structure of genital organs. The male pedi- palp has only single apophysis acompanied by a bunch of very dense, long and thick setae. Embolus is coiled on tip of tegulum and partially or fully hidden in deep cymbial pocket (cavity between apical part of tegulum and cymbium – see logunov 1996). The epigyne has strongly sclerotized shields in posterior part. They cover copulatory openings. Internal structure of epigyne is rather complicated, but usually well visible accessory glands fall into seminal ducts. Below description of a new species of the genus from Cape Province in South Africa is presented. -

Suman BISHOP MUSEUM, HONOLULU, HAWAII Abstract: This paper contains a systematic list of species, and the literature references, of the spiders occurring in the Hawaiian Islands. The species total 149 of which 17 are record ed here for the first time. This paper lists the records and literature of the spiders in the Hawaiian Islands. The islands included are Kure, Midway, Laysan, French Frigate Shoal, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Maui and Hawaii. The only major work dealing with the spiders in the Hawaiian Is. was published 60 years ago in " Fauna Hawaiiensis " by Simon (1900 & 1904). All of the endemic spiders known today, except Pseudanapis aloha Forster, are described in that work which also in cludes a listing of several introduced species. The spider collection available to Simon re presented only a small part of the entire Hawaiian fauna. In all probability, the endemic species are only partly known. Since the appearance of Simon's work, there have been many new records and lists of introduced spiders. The known Hawaiian spider fauna now totals 149 species and 4 subspecies belonging to 21 families and 66 genera. Of this total, 82 species (5596) are believed to be endemic and belong to 10 families and 27 genera including 7 endemic genera. The introduced spe cies total 65 (44^). Two unidentified species placed in indigenous genera comprise the remaining \%. Seventeen species are recorded here for the first time. In the catalog section of this paper, families, genera and species are listed alphabetical ly for convenience. -

Colorado Arthropod of Interest Parson Spiders Scientific Name: Herpyllus species Order: Araneae (Spiders) Family: Gnaphosidae (Ground Spiders) Identification and Descriptive Features: The parson spiders are moderately large spiders (female 6.5-13mm; male 4.5-6.5mm) with overall black color. A broken white or silvery stripe prominently marks the back of the abdomen. (This marking is reminiscent of the old style neck band cravat formerly worn by parsons and others of the ministry.) A wide shiny band of reflective silvery hairs occurs on the cephalothorax. The legs that are brown, banded with black and relatively long; parson spiders are fast runners. Life History and Habits: Parson spiders can be common invaders of buildings in late summer and early fall. Indoors they may be found crawling on walls and they can move quickly, often running in a zig-zag pattern. They do not breed indoors. The parson spiders are active at night and in twilight hours. During the day they seek cover provided by loose bark, boards or other sheltering sites and often form a silken retreat within which they rest. Life history is poorly known. Eggs of at least some species are produced in late summer and early fall. -

A desert-living spider sparassid (Cebrennus rechenbergi Ja¨ger, 2014) and several lycosid spiders (Evippomma rechenbergi Bayer, Foelix & Alderweireldt 2017, Allocosa senex (Mello-Leita˜o, 1945), Geolycosa missouriensis (Banks, 1895)) were studied with respect to their burrow construction. These spiders face the problem of how to transport dry sand and how to achieve a stable vertical tube. Cebrunnus rechenbergi and A. senex have long bristles on their palps and chelicerae which form a carrying basket (psammophore). Small balls of sand grains are formed at the bottom of a tube and carried to the burrow entrance, where they are dispersed. Psammophores are known in desert ants, but this is the first report in desert spiders. Evippomma rechenbergi has no psammophore but carries sand by using a few sticky threads from the spinnerets; it glues the loose sand grains together, grasps the silk/sand bundle and carries it to the outside. Although C. rechenbergi and E. rechenbergi live in the same environment, they employ different methods to carry sand. -

University, Chhapra, India 2School of Environmental Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, India (Accepted November 21, 2015) ABSTRACT Present study was conducted to reveals the community structure and diversity of spider species in different habitat types (gardens, crop fields and houses) of Saran; a part of Indo – Gangetic Plain, India. This area has very rich diversity of flora and fauna due to its climatic conditions, high soil fer- tility and plenty of water availability. The spiders were sampled using two semi-quantitative methods and pitfall traps. A total of 1400 individual adult spiders belonging to 50 species, 29 genera and 15 families were recorded during 1st December 2013 to 28th February 2014. Spider species of houses were distinctive from other habitats it showed low spider species richness. The dominant spider fami- lies were also differs with habitat types. Araneidae, Pholcidae and Salticidae were the dominant spi- der families in gardens, houses and crop fields respectively. Comparison of beta diversity showed higher dissimilarity in spider communities of gardens and houses and higher similarity between spi- der communities of crop fields and gardens. We find that spiders are likely to be more abundant and species rich in gardens than in other habitat types. Habitat structural component had great impact on spider species richness and abundance in studied habitats. -

ABSTRAK Kebanyakan spesies labah-labah di Malaysia dianggap tidak berbahaya kepada manusia dan kes gigitan labah-labah jarang dilaporkan. Ini adalah disebabkan oleh kesan dari gigitan yang tidak serius dan mangsa tidak mendapatkan rawatan di hospital. Sehingga kini, hanya terdapat beberapa kes gigitan labah-labah yang didokumentasikan dari Malaysia. Di sini, kami melaporkan gejala gigitan, kaedah perawatan dan hasil perawatan dua pesakit yang digigit labah-labah pemburu ‘Hitam & Emas’ dari genus Thelcticopis di Malaysia yang masih belum dinamakan spesisnya. Kes pertama melibatkan seorang lelaki berusia 42 tahun yang telah digigit di hujung jari tengahnya, menyebabkan kesakitan dan bengkak setempat. Beliau dirawat secara simtomatik dan pulih tanpa sebarang komplikasi. Kes kedua melibatkan seorang wanita berusia 57 tahun, yang telah digigit pada jari kelingking, menyebabkan kesakitan berdenyut dan kebengkakan progresif. Dia dirawat secara simtomatik dan dibenarkan pulang selepas 24 jam di wad perubatan. Walau bagaimanapun, beliau mendapat sakit di leher dan sendi terutamanya pinggul dan lutut. Beliau telah dirawat dengan ubat tahan sakit dan semua gejala sembuh dalam tempoh dua hari. -
