THE UNIVERSITY OF HULL \Typical Really" An Examination of the Emergence of a British Art-Cinema during the 1960s being a Thesis submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the University of Hull by Martin R. Hall, BA (Hons) March, 2013 Acknowledgements I want to give thanks first and foremost to my Dad, without whom so much more than just this thesis would not have been possible. Thank you for everything. More thanks go to my wife, an immeasurable wellspring of support. You helped me through, from proof reading to just about everything else. If you could have done the work for me I know you would have, however reluctantly! You have done so much to help and support me in every way thinkable that I am astounded as I now think about your part in all of this. I thank you and, of course, I love you. Thanks must be given to Dr. Bruce Woodcock, whose guidance and encouragement started me on this self-destructive path into academia. Thank you also to Dr. John Hoyles and the Hull Film Society minions for my education and amusement, merci beaucoup. I thank Dr. Alan Burton, one of my many supervisors, for your direction and support in the early stages of my research, and Professor Neil Sinyard for sharing his wealth of experience in aid of my work and in introducing me to information and to people. Finally, thank you Dr. James Aston for your assistance and counsel during my final stretch. Whilst my guidance was thrust unexpectedly upon you, you were a resounding source of help and advice, and for that I am extremely grateful.

Maðurinn er svo fullkomlega yfirlætislaus að það er eins og að koma inn á skósmíðaverkstæði til lífsspekings sem aldrei hefur hvarflað að sá hégómi að sækjast eftir mannvirðingum,“ skrifaði Thor Vilhjálmsson af sinni alkunnu snilld í grein sem byggði á heimsókn rithöfundarins á vinnustofu ítalska leikstjórans Federico Fellini árið 1956.1 Aðdáun og virðing Thors fyrir Fellini kemur skýrt fram í greininni, enda óhætt að fullyrða að Fellini hafi verið einn af dáðustu og áhrifamestu leikstjórum kvikmyndasögunnar. Fellini (1920-1993) hóf að vinna í kvikmyndaiðnaðinum snemma á fimmta áratug síðustu aldar, fyrst sem handritshöfundur og síðar sem leikstjóri. Fellini settist fyrst í leikstjórastólinn árið 1950 þegar hann leikstýrði kvikmyndinni Luci del varietà ásamt Alberto Lattuada, en fyrsta kvikmyndin sem hann leikstýrði einn síns liðs var Lo sceicco bianco árið 1952. Fellini fullkomnaði svo „þríleikinn“ með kvikmyndinni I vitelloni árið 1953.

From the New Wave to the New Hollywood: The Life Cycles of Important Movie Directors from Godard and Truffaut to Spielberg and Eastwood David Galenson and Joshua Kotin NBER Working Paper No. 14150 June 2008 JEL No. J01 ABSTRACT Two great movie directors were both born in 1930. One of them, Jean-Luc Godard, revolutionized filmmaking during his 30s, and declined in creativity thereafter. In contrast, Clint Eastwood did not direct his first movie until he had passed the age of 40, and did not emerge as an important director until after 60. This dramatic difference in life cycles was not accidental, but was a characteristic example of a pattern that has been identified across the arts: Godard was a conceptual innovator who peaked early, whereas Eastwood was an experimental innovator who improved with experience.
