It is only twelve years since Steve Jobs unveiled the iPhone - 9th January 2007 - and changed the world for ever. Before that date a telephone just made telephone calls! The speed of change and the scale of innovation left education trying desperately to catch up. The GCSE IT course was scrapped, deemed not fit for purpose. The world had moved on and we all became well versed in what was called ‘Information Technology.’ Adding ‘ Communication’ to the course title was nothing more than a nod to a changing world, a new world – a digital world. The vastness of which can be off putting, but the versatility is thrilling and the vision is something we are trying to instil. It was the question ‘how on earth do we tackle this and provide our students with the knowledge and skills required for their future?’ that led SCWA to develop their Digital Worlds programme. As it moved from the germ of an idea to a concrete reality the chimes and echoes with the IB Middle Years programme became apparent. Strand Three: How do students take up citizenship in this digital world? The world our students face is online: forms, bookings, profiles, comments, sharing, connecting… I’m getting anxious just writing about it! Crucially, students need skills which allow them to make decisions about the reliability of information and be able to avoid knee-jerk reactions. They need to understand how comments can be misunderstood and how offence might be taken. Navigation of official websites, be that college applications, NHS appointments or mortgage applications. This strand also includes the ethical aspects of the Digital World, the relationship with technology, staying safe and knowing where the boundaries are. The introduction of the MYP programme and its global aspirations and aims seemed a natural place to start developing a KS3 ICT curriculum which gives students a head start and gives them the Old school careers such as a car mechanic, doctor, accountant, are knowledge and skills to carry forward to their GCSE years. Academy News Duke of Edinburgh Award: Bronze & Silver Award 2018/19 has been a massive year for Duke of Edinburgh at SCWA. We have had more participants engaging at Bronze, Silver and Gold level than ever before. Furthermore we have taken the exciting step of transitioning to a Directly Licenced Centre meaning that we communicate directly with DofE Head Office. The change has made the running of the overall programme much more efficient and we have also been able to access funding for equipment and staff training meaning that we now have staff who are qualified to supervise and assess expeditions at all levels. This massive expansion would not have been possible without the support of staff from across the Academy and the Stationers’ Company who enabled us to improve the quality of our expedition offer with the integration of GPS tracking technology. Bronze Award The sixty-seven Year 9 participants completing the Bronze Award has been our largest single cohort to date and I am delighted to report that in training sessions and on expedition they have been exceptional. Even when things have gone wrong and they have got lost (which inevitably happens) they have shown a significant amount of maturity and worked together in their groups to overcome the challenges they have faced. Alongside this, throughout the year, participants have been completing 3-6 months of their individual volunteering, skill and physical opportunities. These activities have given them a sense of responsibility, developed their independence and encouraged them to try something new. The expeditions in the North Downs have been a huge success and given many participants a real taste of, and enthusiasm for, continuing with the Silver Award next academic year. Silver Award The forty-three Silver Award participants from years 10 and 11 have also been excellent. On the recent expedition to Alfriston on the South Downs all groups demonstrated significant perseverance and a positive attitude towards failure. The level of independence that they showed over the three days was amazing. Even when they were tired they found the energy to help each other out and work together to overcome the challenges. All of the staff agreed that they were a pleasure to take away (especially because the weather was so lovely). In addition to the expedition section Silver students have been completing 6-12 months of their individual volunteering, skill and physical sections showing a sustained and long-term commitment to helping others and trying something new. This experience and the Award more generally will help them massively as they move into further study and I hope that they continue to be involved and complete their Gold Award in the future. Thanks and Conclusion I would like to say a massive thanks to all of the staff that have supported the 2018/19 programme; Mr Langford, Ms Galip, Mr Barnshaw, Miss Kneath, Mrs Howe, Miss Giles, Mr Bailey, Miss Pham, Mrs Long and Miss Bell - without whom the expeditions would not be possible. In addition, this year Imogen Murray, Jodie Rest and Katie Rackstraw, all former participants and award holders have kindly volunteered to support on expeditions so many thanks to them for their hard work. We have already had nearly 100 prospective year 9 students enroll to participate in the 2019/20 Bronze Award programme and I suspect that the Silver Award cohort will also expand when we launch enrolment in September. It is fantastic to see so many students at the Academy engaging in a range of positive activities, through their volunteering, physical and skills sections, as well as seeking to challenge themselves on expedition. Finally, if any parent/carer feels able to support the programme in any way, possibly through donating good quality but unused camping equipment or offering a volunteering opportunity, please don’t hesitate to get in touch ([email protected]). However Howard gave some great tips on showcasing your talents to future employers as all Business will always want to look for new talents and those with potential.” The overall feedback from the talk has been positive and hopefully hearing from an industry leader like Howard has given a new insight into their future plans and perceptions.

Gruesome Trip for Year 7s Geography Field Trip An excellent day out was spent at the London Dungeons with some of our Year 7 students. We enjoyed an exhilarating drop ride, had a River Darenth few scares and heard some gruesome stories of the City of London. “At London Dungeons it was fun but terrifying at the same time. In my opinion, the scariest parts were Jack the Ripper and the part where the woman broke out of the cell, I found these scary because the lights were flickering and the characters just appeared in front of you. My friends and I were really happy and enjoyed it very much. For most of us our favourite part was the ride, it was pitch black and went up and down.” Oliver (7SWO)

Tearful trip to see Toy Story 4! Fifteen students from Year 7 went to Bluewater Cinema to celebrate Oliva’s (7AAI). Award from Jack Petchey. Mr Sandhu, trip leader said: “the students were excellent and it was a great way to take the business studies curriculum outside of the classroom”. Richie (9EGS) ”It was a brilliant trip with lots to do and I enjoyed the experience.” Joshua (9EGS): “I enjoyed the seminar as it helped me use my knowledge in the question and answer sessions.” Lana (9CBL): “It was a great trip, experience and a day I will always remember.” Following the visit, Mr Millar was delighted to receive a note from Cadbury’s Education & Heritage Centre Manager: I had the pleasure of meeting some of your students today and renewing a longstanding friendship with Mr. Sandhu. I just wanted to note that during the marketing talk I delivered your students were very respectful, of excellent behaviour and a credit not only to your school, but to teenagers in general. Mr. Sandhu and the other two members of staff were consummate professionals and you must be rather proud of your students and teaching staff. I sincerely trust we can host your school again. I wish all the departing members of Year 11 the very best for the future and urge them all to keep in touch. As I said at the graduation and as I always say to students...”Once a member of the Sherwood family, always a member of the Sherwood family”. Delamere News Tennis Superstar Domantas’ Theorem Congratulations to our tennis superstar Dimitar (7SWO) who reached Domantas’ theorem is an old and often forgotten theorem the final of the Under 12 doubles in a Regional Tennis Tournament rediscovered (and renamed) by Domantas himself. It involves processes used to find the Lowest Common Multiple (LCM) by using challenging and legendary maths to find out the answer. The process starts with 2 numbers that you want to find the LCM of such as 28 and 72. Next you need to find the prime factors of each number, so 28 would be 2 x 2 x 7 and for 72 it would be 2 x 2 x 2 x 3 x 3. You then find factors they both share, which is 2 x 2 =4. You then have to multiply the 28 and 72 together, which give you 2016 and finally divide this answer by 4, which will give you an LCM of 504. Another example Isobel (10MKH) in Class Action at the The 2 numbers are 8456616 and 15030036 8456616 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 3 x 3 x 3 x 7 x 7 x 17 x 47 Bob Hope Theatre 15030036 = 2 x 2 x 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 x 7 x 47 x 47 Huge congratulations to Isobel, a Year 10 student who has performed in HCF = 2 x 2 x 3 x 3 x 3 x 7 x 47 = 35532 a production of Class Action at the Bob Hope Theatre in Eltham. There were numerous frustrations as there were many re-takes to ensure it was polished and synchronised to a professional standard. Maria (Director) did an excellent job co-ordinating her crew and her PA, Lauren and Vision Mixer, Ellen, contributed very well in the gallery. The floor managers (Amy and Joe) and four camerapersons (Harry ,Samantha, Mollie and Rebecca) did an excellent job, they looked like they had been doing this for years, they were so in the zone. The rest of the crew: Dominique (Sound), Rebecca (Lighting), Thomas (Autocue) and Andrea (MAM VT operator) all contributed very well. I had a cameo role as a guest on the show, answering the presenter’s questions on Arden, the media/film department and also on how to go about getting into the Film/Television industry. The Live production took place in the late afternoon and two full live takes were recorded. I was immensely proud of our students as they represented their Academy with dignity and were exemplary in their roles, amazing ambassadors for SCWA. Ravensbourne praised their professional approach likening it to their first year students who would work for days to produce something similar. The whole experience was inspirational, creative and engaging. Our students will receive a copy of the two live takes which they can use as part of their showreel when applying for University, apprenticeships/internships and/or jobs within the industry. Thank you Ravensbourne, and thank you students, greatly appreciated.
