The Severn Valley Railway had only been open for two years and only operated between Bridgnorth and Hampton Loade when it was first discovered by the television industry as a location for a television sequence. The programme was Doctor In Charge, the third incarnation of the “Doctor” series of comedies based on the books of Richard Gordon, and was broadcast between 1972 and 1973. It had been preceded by Doctor In The House and Doctor At Large, and later series included Doctor At Sea and Doctor On The Go. The episodes were written by Graeme Garden and Bill Oddie post I’m Sorry I’ll Read That Again and before The Goodies and starred Robin Nedwell, Richard O’Sullivan, George Layton, Geoffrey Davies and Ernest Clark.

    PRESS RELEASE MARCH 2011 11/28 The Nation’s Health TV Season at BFI Southbank in May 2011. In an era when the National Health Service is facing impending and major reform, BFI Southbank mounts a season investigating television’s love affair with the NHS across drama, comedy and documentary from the 1950’s to today and asks what this tells us about our relationship with the venerable institution. In addition to screenings of NHS based dramas including GF Newman’s’ The Nation’s Health (1983), comedies like Only When I Laugh (1979) and documentaries such as Jimmy’s (1979, highlights of the season are set to include a special discussion with Casualty creators Paul Unwin, Jeremy Brock and John Yorke (BBC Controller, Drama Production and New Talent) who will be examining both the programme’s enduring appeal and the changes it has undergone. Creator of Cardiac Arrest and Bodies, Dr. Jed Mercurio, will also take to the BFI Southbank stage to discuss the immense significance of both of his celebrated productions. Television was quick to see the potential in the heightened emotions surrounding illness, death and the romantic attraction of doctors and nurses, all neatly contained in the one set – your average NHS hospital ward. From ATV's Emergency Ward 10 dating from the 1950's to the BBC's current series Holby City these basic tenets of the hospital drama remain the same. A gift to writers and producers but also an historical document of the way we perceive our NHS and the immense changes in our relationship with it through the decades.

    Is There a Doctor in the House? Medical Worker Absence in India Karthik Muralidharana, Nazmul Chaudhuryb, Jeffrey Hammerc, Michael Kremerd, and F. Halsey Rogerse 12 April 2011 Abstract The availability of medical providers, a crucial element in quality of care, depends not only on budgeting for and filling posts but also on ensuring that providers are not frequently absent. We present data from a nationally representative all-India survey (conducted in 2003) of over 1400 public health centers across 19 major states, in which survey enumerators physically verify the attendance of providers during unannounced visits, and find that nearly 40% of doctors and medical service providers are absent from work on a typical day. Doctor absence rates ranged from 30% in Madhya Pradesh to over 67% in Bihar. High absence of medical workers is unlikely to be explained by official duties outside the clinic since even pharmacists and lab technicians who are expected to be at the clinic during working hours had absence rates of 30%. While some doctors had a higher underlying absence rate than others, the absence problem is quite widely distributed and not concentrated among a few doctors. Doctors posted at remote facilities and at facilities with poor infrastructure and equipment were absent at significantly higher rates, as were those with longer commutes. Doctors were more likely to be absent than junior staff, but all levels of staff were significantly less absent in facilities where the doctor in charge was more likely to be present.
