We were looking for a house with a little bit of land when we came across this property, the little bit of land we had hoped for, turned out to be 3.5 acres and there were run down stables, outbuildings and pigsties, however we immediately saw great potential” say the current owners of 137 Rugby Road, in the Warwickshire village of Binley Woods. “We were keen to return the area where the buildings had been to lawn, so knocked them down, removed 450 tons of rubble and tarmac and brought in 32 tons of topsoil then ploughed, harrowed and seeded. “I have a love of history” the owner continues, “and did a little research on the woodland attached to the property. I found that when it was part of the Coombe Abbey estate the area was called ‘Big Rough’ and before that in the 18th Century ‘Sleamakers Rough’.”

The owners have done extensive work on the house itself since moving in around 20 years ago. “Our kids were youngsters when we first moved in, so they had great fun helping us to renovate the house” they say. “They loved having to climb up scaffolding to get to bed as we redid the staircase.
