“College Bound”? Admission Tests are Required for College Admission

College admission tests are one of the requirements when applying to a college or university. Both the ACT (American College Test) and the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) are admission tests. A student may choose to take one or both of these assessments. However, it should be noted that the University of Wisconsin System has historically preferred scores from the ACT assessment as part of its entrance requirements. Also, to qualify for some scholarships a student may be required to submit an ACT or SAT score.

Students may register for either test online at the address below or using the registration materials they can pick up in the Counseling Office.

ACT - actstudent.org SAT - collegeboard.com

A few important facts about these tests that may be helpful for you to know: The ACT has an optional writing test. It is important for students to check online at actstudent.org prior to registering to take the test, to see if the college(s) they plan on applying to requires the writing test. Not all schools require this test. The SAT also has a writing section to its test, however it is included as part of the test and all students who take the SAT will take the writing component. Both testing compa- nies indicate that applying online expedites registration for the test.

**Please go the Counseling website for free online test preparation materials.

On page nine you will find the dates for testing.

ATTENTION PARENTS OF JUNIORS

The PSAT/NMSQT® exam will be offered at Wausau West on Wednesday, October 10, 2018, beginning at 8:00 am. Students may sign up in the Business Office, or online via the Parent Portal with a credit card by September 12th. The cost of the test is $17. The pur- pose of the PSAT (practice SAT) is to give students an opportunity to experience taking a college readiness test and to identify students who might benefit from advanced coursework.

By taking the PSAT in 11th grade, all students have the opportunity to qualify for participation in the National Merit Scholarship Program. PSAT/NMSQT® scores are used as initial screen of entrants to the Na- tional Merit Scholarship Program, which recognizes outstanding aca- demic achievement by U.S. high school students.

Students must be in good academic standing, have good attendance, and take responsibility to ar- range missed work and class time from taking the test on October 10th.

SOPHOMORE PLANNING CONFERENCE COMING UP!

The Wausau West Counseling Department will be inviting parents and sophomores to a Tenth Grade Plan- ning Conference this fall. The conference will be 30 minutes in length and will take place during school hours. We will use this meeting to discuss high school and career goals and may include some of the follow- ing topics: transcripts, graduation requirements, course selections, career plans, Career Interest Inventory and any questions or concerns that you would have. This conference is important for your student in plan- ning their high school career and beyond. Further information will be forthcoming.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS FOR PARENTS/GUARDIANS

We ask that you please remind your child of any appointments or any other re- minders they need BEFORE they come to school. If it is an emergency, please call the Counseling Office @ 715-261-0890 and they will get the message to your student immediately. Otherwise, if the message can wait, we ask that it wait. We want to limit the number of interruptions in the classroom so we can focus on stu- dents and their instruction as much as possible.

SENIOR REMINDER Seniors planning on applying to a University of Wisconsin campus

It’s never too early to start working on your college applications! The application for University of Wisconsin schools will be available online August 1, at https://apply.Wisconsin.edu/.

You could potentially have all components completed before September 1 (first day applications can be sub- mitted), with schools reviewing the applications starting September 15. With rolling admission policies the earlier you get the application completed and turned in the more likely you are to gain acceptance.

Seniors who are applying to a UW campus need to start working on college essays as part of the application. This is one of the most important parts of the application. Each school uses different essay prompts. To search for the prompts for your desired school go to http://apply.wisconsin.edu and look under the application instructions.

WEST DRAMA TO PRESENT YOU’RE A GOOD MAN, CHARLIE BROWN Book by Michael Mayer, Music and Lyrics by Andrew Lippa

“Charles Schulz’s beloved comic comes to life in Clark Gesner’s classic musical, You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown. The whole gang is here: bossy Lucy is hopelessly in love with piano prodigy Schroeder who doesn’t give her the time of day, perfectionist Sally is still mocking blanket-toting Linus, Snoopy is in the doghouse, and “blockhead,” himself, Charlie Brown, is in rare form. Brief vignettes span the months from Valentine’s Day to Beethoven Day, from wild optimism to utter despair...Whether you’re keen to fly with the Red Baron, moon over the Moonlight Sonata, or just do your best to find “Happiness,” You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown is a crowd-pleasing classic.” (https://stageagent.com/shows/musical/1386/youre-a-good-man-charlie-brown)

2018 WICPA EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION GRANT RECIPIENTS

Exploring and helping students become aware of all the different careers in the accounting field is the WICPA Educational Foundation grant. Wausau West Business Education instructors, Mrs. Dawn Jameson and Mrs. Stephanie Jahnke, were awarded this grant in December 2017.

Accounting is a high-demand career. Having accounting with a marketing major/minor is in demand as well. Twenty-three students from the Advanced Accounting and Advanced Marketing classes at- tended a field trip to the Milwaukee Bucks’ corporate office on April 5, 2018. The students com- pleted hands-on practicum tasks that involved computing what actually happens in the sports/ marketing field.

The accounting students were given five scenarios pertaining to depreciation, payroll, expense of players, fundraising and reconciliation of a bank statement. The marketing students were involved in being a part of a focus group on the new “Bucks Gaming” video game platform.

Afterwards, students stayed for the game. Being able to see how accounting and marketing are found in the arena gave the students a better understanding of the industry, even outside of the of- fice setting.

Students are completing a hands-on scenario pertaining to depreciation of a piece of equipment.

19 PARENT INFORMATION BUILDING SECURITY

Wausau West will be continuing the procedure of locking all exterior doors between the hours of 7:45 am and 3:00 pm during the school days. We are asking all visitors to continue using the Main Office atrium as the school en- trance point during the school day.

Our Attendance Office is located directly adjacent to the main office. This al- lows families to conduct their attendance business directly upon entering the building. This measure should decrease the amount of traffic flowing into the building from visitors during the school day.

Providing a safe and secure environment is a priority at Wausau West. We appreciate your patience, under- standing and follow through with these measures to help make West the great school that it is.
