and would follow up with any staff mem- ber who missed shiur. During the days of Color War, atten- dance was nearly perfect. To be honest, some may have dozed off during the shiur those three days, but everyone came. Be- fore shiur during one of those days, Rabbi Sauber shared a penetrating insight that I have never forgotten: The Rambam (Hilchos Talmud Torah 3:12) writes about the virtue of learning Torah with exertion and dedication. Based on a pasuk in Koheles, the Rambam (paraphras- ing the midrash) states: “The Torah that I learned b’af, that has been fulfi lled within me.” The simple meaning of b’af is “in an- ger.” Rav Yitzchok Hutner zt”l once quipped that b’af can also mean “even so” (as in the Gemara’s lexicon: “af al pi kein”). In other words, it’s the Torah that one learns “even so” – i.e, when he has ten excuses why he cannot or should not learn, and does so nonetheless, that really becomes internal- ized and builds him spiritually. Rabbi Sauber continued that it’s particu- larly when one is exhausted after sleepless nights, or when the room is hot and humid, or whatever other justifi cations one has not to learn, that real growth takes place. The measure of greatness is not when one performs when he’s at his best, but how much he is able to produce when his resis- tance is low and he’s not feeling his best. When one triumphs over his personal “af al pi kein,” that is where the road to greatness lies. That’s true in regards to all spiritual matters, even more so in regards to Torah study. Those who are already sleep-deprived and overworked, yet push themselves to learn Torah, perform chesed, and daven properly – those are the real winners!

We next travel across the globe to Moscow on August 30, 1918. On this date, Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin (born Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov) was shot twice by a Social Revo- lutionary Party member named Fanya (Fanny) Kaplan while giving a speech at a factory. Lenin survived, and the attack led to a large wave of reprisals from the Bolsheviks against all their political opponents, with thousands being executed as Russia drifted deeper into civil war. Lenin had been involved in revolutionary activity since 1887, when his broth- er was executed for plotting to assassinate Czar Alexander III, and from the start of the twentieth century Lenin was involved in Marxist activities. After being exiled for the second time in 1907, Lenin returned to Russia after the February Revolution of 1917. For a much more recent event, we next go to August 29, 2005, the date on which Hurricane Katrina made landfall near New Orleans, Louisiana. At the time, it was clas- sifi ed as a Category 4 hurricane and third most powerful storm that year. It became the worst natural disaster in US history, damaging the coasts of Mississippi and Alabama, as well as several parts of Louisiana, chiefl y in the city of New Orleans. An evacuation of the city was ordered the previous day when Katrina was briefl y upgraded to Category 5, but approximately 150,000 people ignored the order for a number of varying reasons and determined to ride out the storm. When Katrina hit New Orleans, it brought with it 145-mile-per-hour sustained winds, which cut power lines and destroyed homes, even turning cars into crude missiles. More signifi cant, however, was the storm surge it caused along the Gulf Coast. The waters overwhelmed the levees of the below-sea-level city, and soon 80 percent of the city was fl ooded, up to the rooftops of small buildings. It was an effort worthy of a po- litical campaign, as Chazaq vol- unteers looked up names, called relatives and friends, anyone they knew who was Jewish and in public school. The result was approximately two hundred par- ents and children at Beth Gavriel learning about the available op- tions in tuition assistance and schools. “We provide assistance that makes the difference. We work with schools through our network of donors,” said Rabbi Robert Garber, who founded the nonprofi t Our Jewish Children with his wife Susan. “Our daugh- ter interned at a public school in Rego Park and found kids there with kippot.” It is a rare sight in our time, but as these chil- dren continue to attend public school, what are the odds that their heads will remain covered? “The biggest factor that relates to remaining connected is a Jewish education.” In the week since the event, Our Jewish Chil- dren provided support to several students in need of tuition assis- tance, including those already attending yeshivah but at risk of dropping out due to fi nancial hardship. “Parents are afraid what it may mean,” said Tzivia Fried- man, director of Nefesh Acade- my in Borough Park, describing children who become more observant than their parents. “I tell them that schools and parents are a team. It’s about respect for parents and tradi- tions.” When asked about secu- lar education, Friedman points out that over 90 percent of grad- uates at her all-girls school go on to college. Torah Anytime founder Shi- mon Kolyakov represented Ye- shiva Primary in Hollis Hills, alongside founder and dean Rabbi Zalmen Deutscher. “I’m a product of this yeshivah. It was a small yeshivah back then, and its classes have stayed small for individual attention,” said Kolya- kov. Speaking from experience, he said that while it is possible to attend public school and be- come observant later in life, the risk is too great. “The seeds planted in me were here.”
