Most of them were com- posed under the immediate impression of the characters described. They are offered to the reader (except in the case of the 1 as this essay on Robert Malthus ) being of nature not written coolly, long afterwards. In the per- spective of history. The essays on Mr. Lloyd George and on Robert Malthus have not been published previ- ously. References to the sources of the other essays are given in an appendix. In the second section some scattered commentary will be found on the history and progress of economic doctrine; though my main purpose has been bio- graphical. Incidentally, I have sought with some touches ofdetail to bring out the solidarity and historical continuity of the High Intelligentsia of England, who have built up the foundations of our thought in the two and a half centuries, since Locke, in his Essay Concerning Human Understanding, wrote the first modern English book. I relate below (p. 70) the amazing progeny of Sir George Villiers. But the lineage of the High In- telligentsia is hardly less interbred and spiritually inter- mixed. Let the Villiers Connection fascinate the monarch or the mob and rule, or seem to rule, passing events. Her spell in charge of the already renowned magazine, which had begun its life in America in 1892, lasted until only 1926. These years represent somewhat of an anomaly in the flawless history of the world's most famous fashion magazine, and study of the editions from this era reveal a Vogue that few would expect. Dorothy Todd, the most enigmatic and undocumented figure in the history of the magazine and, arguably within the sphere of popular publications in general, used Vogue as the vehicle through which to promote the innovative forms in art and literature that were emerging at the beginning of the twentieth century. -

Biography and Autobiography at the Hogarth Press by Claire Battershill A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of English University of Toronto © Copyright by Claire Battershill 2012 Biography and Autobiography at the Hogarth Press Claire Battershill Doctor of Philosophy Department of English University of Toronto 2012 Abstract The subject of this thesis is the biographies and autobiographies published by Leonard and Virginia Woolf’s Hogarth Press between 1917 and 1946. I combine several areas of scholarly inquiry – biography and autobiography studies, modernist studies, book history, and the history of reading – in order to examine the intersections between literary and textual constructions of genre and the role of categorization in the book trade. My central argument is that diversity, as both the policy and the product of the Hogarth Press, allowed a multitude of voices, methodologies, perspectives, and subjects to co-exist at one publishing house and produced a body of works that goes far beyond the small circle of Bloomsbury with which it is usually associated. The variety of the Hogarth Press’s publications meant that its approach to genre was one of hybridity, oscillation, and ambivalence, but one that nevertheless found ways to position complicated works in the category-oriented world of the book trade. Drawing from unpublished archival materials in order to uncover relationships between authors, readers, publishers, booksellers, literary agents, book clubs, and critics, I argue that the Hogarth Press’s practices in publishing biographies and autobiographies informed the Woolfs’ writings about the importance and role of the genres in the context of literary modernism. -

Elizabeth Dickens 2010 Abstract BRINGING BOOKS TO THE PUBLIC: BRITISH INTELLECTUAL WEEKLY PERIODICALS, 1918-1939 M. Elizabeth Dickens Doctor of Philosophy Department of English and Collaborative Program in Book History and Print Culture University of Toronto 2010 My dissertation investigates the role of intellectual weekly periodicals such as the Nation and Athenaeum and the New Statesman as mediators between the book trade and the audience for so-called serious books. The weeklies offer a productive lens through which to examine the labels commonly applied to early twentieth-century intellectual culture. The rise of a mass reading public and the proliferation of print in this period necessitated cultural labels with a sorting function: books, periodicals, and people were designated as "highbrow," "middlebrow," "modernist," "Georgian," "Bloomsbury." Through an analysis of the intellectual weeklies, a periodical genre explicitly devoted to the appraisal of intellectual culture, I argue for a critical revaluation of cultural labels as they were used in the early twentieth century and as they have been adopted in later scholarship. Using quantitative methodologies influenced by book history, Chapter One argues that the weeklies' literary content was characterized by the periodicals' reciprocal relationship with the book trade: publishers were the weeklies' most significant advertisers, and the weeklies, in turn, communicated information about new books to their book-interested readers. Through an analysis of two series of articles published in the Nation and Athenaeum in the mid-1920s, Chapter Two considers the weeklies' negotiation of their dual roles as forums for public debate about intellectual culture and ii advertising partners with the book trade. -

Signature: Jenni Råback Date: 2 September 2019 2 Abstract This thesis argues that Virginia Woolf’s writing must be understood as enacting her sororal relationship with her sister Vanessa Bell. The argument is grounded in theorisations of kinship that regard relationships as actively performed and constructed and therefore allow interpretations of creative work as a site of ‘doing sisters’, or sistering. A focus on siblings provides a lateral alternative to conventional figurations of familial and social life, which tend to follow Oedipal models. -
