PUBLISHED BY: The Church in Borrowdale.PRINTED BY: McKanes Printers, Keswick, 80574. 2 OSCARS FIND 2018 - the centenary year marking World War 1’s end made us aware of the sacrifice of young men lost in terrible battles. We honoured our ten Borrowdale men and then this extraordinary story happened. Scouts canoeing by the “Chinese Bridge” - seven- year-old Oscar - Scoutmasters son, paddled when his toes turned up this Commemorative Medal - imagine how he felt! Identified as a Commemorative Memorial Plaque issued to the next of kin of fallen soldiers. 1,355,000 were issued using 450 tonnes of bronze, becoming known as a Dead Man's Penny with it showing Brittania, as did the Oscar with his find penny at that time. This one, issued to Harriet, Ernest Nunn’s widow. Born in Needam Market Ernest, a Suffolk man met Harriet (a Braithwaite girl) working in . They married, but Ernest of the Coldstream Guards was killed in France on 23rd October 1915. Harriet met Tom Robinson of Troutdale when working in Euston Station tearooms. Returning north married Tom. Their son Kenneth married Moira of Mountain View and they never left Troutdale. Now Moira and her sons wish the plaque to be with the Borrowdale Story. Ernest Nunn's name is on the Keswick War Memorial. In Suffolk we can trace no close relatives. Never knowing how the plaque came to be in the river - it could have been there years and many more to come. It seems right it should have been found in that centenary year. PUBLIC CONVENIENCE NEWS! WE know that this wee bit of news has been a very long time coming, but the fact is that our Valley toilets in Grange are staying! It has been a long and frustrating course of events and very disappointing that the refurbishment couldn’t have taken place earlier to enable our many visitors this year to have the urgent facility. However, we are bowled over at seeing work in progress. At this present time, the toilets are being refurbished. At the end of September, the electrics are going in to provide lighting and a payment turnstile. I believe that it will be 20p a flush. The Lake District National Park are going to take over the leasehold of the toilets with the National Trust providing cleaning and maintenance. We are flushed with excitement at this chain of events and the prospect of having once again decent toilet facilities in this wonderful area where our visitors can be seated on the throne in comfort. A big thank you to Borrowdale Parish Council for their input and support. FARMERS SERVICE AND DINNER Friday 29th November 7pm Tickets £20 Bookings: Carole 77677 or Malcolm 77671

4 NATIONAL TRUST UPDATE Footpath Repairs October is the last month for this year that the footpath team will be working on the high fells. Each winter they work in the valleys because the days tend to be too short and the weather conditions too bad to work on upland paths. The team completed the erosion repairs at Gillercombe in September. This month they’re focusing on finishing the work on Glaramara to extend and protect the existing stretches of stone-pitched path and then they’re repairing erosion scars just below Scales Tarn on Blencathra. Ings Boardwalk / Brockle Beck restoration

Photo: Roy Henderson The new boardwalk going into Ings Wood August 2019 By the end of October we also hope that the new boardwalk through Ings Wood will be open to the public, enabling the beck to flow more naturally through the rare wet woodland habitat and improving conditions for both people and wildlife. Work is a little behind schedule because the ground was softer than we anticipated so we used more uprights to support the boardwalk than we’d planned. Keep an eye on our website for updates.

5 Combe Gill Hydro

Flying the intake pipe for the hydro project

The micro hydro energy Photo: Roy Henderson project at Glaramara is well under way, work will continue until Summer 2020. We used the helicopter flights booked to fly stone up for path repairs to also fly the pipe up for the hydro project, and we’ve increased the signage for the footpath diversion to make it more obvious. Combe Gill Hydro path diversion Heritage Open Days It was good to see some familiar faces on our free guided walks for Heritage Open Days in September. Thank you to everyone who came along or helped to promote the walks. The walks were well supported and we got lots of positive feedback so we’re thinking of making it an annual event.

6 TRUDY HARRISON MP AT BORROWDALE SCHOOL On Friday 20th September, Borrowdale School was visited by our MP Trudy Harrison. Trudy Harrison is the MP for Copeland, but she is also the PPS (Parliamentary Private Secretary) to the Secretary of State for Education, . After meeting Mr Smits in the Institute in July, she wanted to learn more about the challenges currently faced by small rural schools in Cumbria such as Borrowdale School. She also wanted to meet the pupils of Borrowdale and give them the chance to ask her questions about issues that matter to them.

First, the children asked the MP questions about what it was like to be an MP. Mrs Harrison told them about some of the long days when she has to travel to Westminster, and what her days look like when she is there. She also told the children about the amazing people she meets and the interesting visits she gets to make. Of course the children also asked questions about . Mrs Harrison talked about how the UK will always be part of Europe, but she compared the EU to a club to which not all countries in Europe belong. When a question about the sustainability of small schools was asked, Mrs Harrison

7 explained that she became interested about going into politics when she campaigned to keep Captain Shaw School in Bootle open because she believes that schools are very important for rural community. Most pupils had shown solidarity with the Global Strike earlier that day, so they questioned why councils charge schools to recycle their waste, and it surprised Mrs Harrison that this was the case. She promised to find out more and that she would write to the pupil who asked the question. Mrs Harrison also told the children how important it is to promote clean energy when she was asked about what more could be done about reducing climate change. The NHS was the final topic that the children wanted to talk about, and Mrs Harrison explained that even though Cumbria is a beautiful place to work, it is still difficult to recruit enough people to fill all the jobs that are here. The children hope to catch up with Mrs Harrison again in Westminster when they are going to London for a residential later this year.

REV CHARLES WRITES AFTER THE SEPTEMBER PCC MEETING Thank you to everyone who helps care for and maintain the churches of St Andrews & Holy Trinity. Over the coming months we hope to build on this support as we develop local groups caring for both churches, a sort of ‘friends’ group. If you are interested in helping us care for our beautiful churches in this way, please let Charles know (75855). It has a wonderful surprise to receive two legacies from the estates of the late Mrs Margaret Woodyer and Dr Sylvia Moss. To receive such support is very much appreciated. The next congregational meeting to talk about the and work of the church is on Sunday October 27th 11.40 (after the church service) at Holy Trinity. The PCC meeting thereafter is on December 4th at 1 pm.

8 THE FIFTEENTH If you wanted to paint a pastiche of Borrowdale you would find it difficult to better Sunday 15th September 2019. The weather was somewhere between threatening and uncertain; the roads were crowded ‘Beware Runners on Road’, but the Youth Hostel, the Artists (deep inside the ‘tute), the Farmers and the Church were all there desperately trying to say something - what were these four groups trying to say? Valley arts raised a total of £980 for Cancer Research I would love to tell you what I think they were trying to, or in fact saying, very effectively. But no, I’m humble, and only the Editor. It was a good day.

9 10 BORROWDALE’S 80TH BIRTHDAY PARTY YHA Borrowdale turned 80 this year and, after months of preparation, Sunday saw our birthday party. At 10am we opened our Heritage Open Day exhibition, and members of the public dropped in throughout the day to have a cuppa and cake, read about the hostel and have a tour. By mid afternoon, party guests had started to arrive, and (this being 1939) were allocated their room and chore. By early evening, the bar was athrong with partygoers. The Pass the Parcel parcel was lobbed into the crowd, the music turned up, and games commenced. The games continued after food, and it was the early hours before many guests headed for their beds. Monday morning dawned bright and sunny, with a haze delicately swathing the fell tops, and grass wet with dew. Bleary eyed guests enjoyed breakfast baps, gazed at gloriousness around them and reflected on the night before. We were especially pleased to welcome several former wardens of Borrowdale, along with many former staff and volunteers, who have all worked hard to make the hostel what it is today. A particularly touching theme of the day was the number of people who brought along old photos of the hostel, and talked about their happy memories of staying here over the years. The place is held in great affection by many people, and it’s a privilege to work here. Thanks to everyone who came along to help us celebrate, thanks to those who helped to make the night happen, and here’s to another 80 years.

12 REMEMBERING Mid October - we Remember that the flowers have bloomed, the sheep have lambed (over a thousand lambs born this Spring in the Valley) and the grass has grown. Harvest just one of the miracles amongst which we live. The Children remind us to remember, at Harvest time, to remember the hungry. Everything given will go to the Food Bank at Cockermouth. That’s the right way to remember. As I write I’m told that the thirty-first of October will be a day to Remember, we will see - but down the centuries November has grown into being a month of memories. That poem: Remember, remember the fifth of November, but that is not my reference point. Malcolm As Autumn turns to Winter it’s not a bad time to look back; look back and say thank you? They call it All Souls Day (2nd November) we call it Gladioli Sunday (3rd November). We remember, thank God for, and pray for the Borrowdale people whom have been buried in our Yard. We remember them by blessing some flowers then taking them with a prayer to the graves of the recently buried. If you could help enrich this time by your presence and your silent memories - it’s 10.30 Sunday 3rd November at Saint Andrew’s - please do come and join us. The Eleventh of the Eleventh at Eleven - we shall join the nation (and worshippers on Great Gable and Castle Cragg) in two minutes silence at Holy Trinity. Grange. Jesus reminded his disciples, on the night before he died, to do something in remembrance of him. Memory is a powerful force in shaping our society and if we choose not to remember the folly of war and the sacrifice of young men and women to find peace, we shall not be able to sustain and build our country and our community. Holy Trinity, Grange 10.30 10th November - and in many other places. Then we come to the annual Farmers Service and Dinner. This year to be held on. Friday 29th November Tickets £20. The whole community is invited to join the thirty five people in the valley who are involved in the agricultural business and to enjoy themselves at a short service in Saint Andrew’s and a jolly good dinner in the Institute. I get a lot of criticism for calling it The Farmers Do - when it is in fact a whole Valley night out. Sorry I’ve just got stuck on the idea - mind you if the thirty five had turned up for Harvest Festival I might have thought of some other crazy excuse for a night out in November. Think of it S a Community Thanks Evening.

14 SNIPPETS Weddings at Saint Andrew’s. We congratulate Sam Scholes and Camilla attwood who both live in Worksop. They were married on August 17th. Michelle Ferry, who teaches at our school was married at Saint Andrew’s to Jack Cooper on September 21st. Our prayers and good wishes are offered. Charlie Hicks and Heather Larkin got married on Saturday 21st September. We delight in them and wish them well. Please note, to be married in the parish, broadly, you, your parents or grandparents need to [1] have lived in the valley or [2] have been a regular worshipper at church, or [3] been baptised, confirmed in the parish or on the church electoral roll. Or you need to stay in the parish for a number of days. Marriage regulations are law and can be ‘complex’ – please ask me and I will do my best to help you through the legal processes! Charles (75855). Rory Wedgewood was baptised at Saint Andrew’s on April 11th. Second child of Paul and Jade and brother for Noah. Dorothy Jackson lived all her life in the valley till seven years ago, when she sensibly moved to Derwent Close. Dorothy was very much a member of the Church and the Mothers Union and she and her family were an highly respected part of the community. She was buried at Saint Andrew’s on August 12th. Also on that day the Ashes of audrey Finlinson were buried at Saint Andrew’s. She loved the valley and was a regular visitor. Please note, broadly, to be buried in the churchyard at St John's the person must have lived or died in the valley or have a significant connection to the valley; but we are prepared to bury ashes of any who love the valley. If in doubt, please check with me. After Easter next year I will be checking that the churchyard plan is accurate, to make sure the saved graves are where they should be! There will be an opportunity for anyone who wishes to check the plans. I will announce the date for this in the Spring. But any questions or issues, do contact me (75855). Charles. The Herdwick Evening at and for The Institutewas held on Friday 23rd of August. A good do. Excellent Supper, Bar Open and a very successful auction. Someone got a rather good bottle of whisky for One hundred pounds.Snippets knows it was good ‘cause it cost forty quid and he intends to call round and take a taste. Patricia Roscamp reminds me: The Longthwaite Farm and Rose Cottage article in the recent Borrowdale News did not include her note on the real wonder of her research. It was not just the hospitality that was memorable but that the Dale is full of so many amazing stories and coincidences such as Oscar's medal and now another coincidence about the Second World War is emerging for Remembrance Sunday.
