Building Together the “LEGACY” of Holy Family The Journey of our Faith

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, with all your strength.” Mark 12:29-30

In the waning weeks of this liturgical year of Mark, we have been instructed in the first and greatest commandment, to love the Lord our God with all that we are. We have also heard the stories of two widows who sacrificed everything they had, at desperate times in their life, trusting in Gods providence. All of this in the light of the ultimate sacrifice of Christ and remembering the rich young man who could not part with his possessions. God has blessed each of us with gifts and talents for the building up of the Kingdom of God. These gifts are meant to be shared – to lift up, build up, and strengthen those who are not so richly blest. “In teaching us charity, the Gospel instructs us in the preferential respect due to the poor and the special situation they have in society: the more fortunate should renounce some of their rights so as to place their goods more generously at the service of others.” Pope Paul VI, Octogesima Adveniens, 1971: 23 We are also called to love the Lord our God with all our heart, with all our soul, with all our mind, with all our strength. Fr. Enrique recently posed the question, at the masses he celebrated, “Do you love God?” Of course, the answer was, “Yes.” But, how do we manifest that sense of loving God… how do we make it real, to become part of our lives? As you look around you, if someone new were to come into your home, would they recognize that you are a Catholic Christian? Does your home reflect your love for God? Does our church, as old and tired as it is, reflect our love for God? Initially, we might respond with a resounding yes, but the next time you come to Mass, try to imagine walking into Holy Family for the first time…what do you really see? Our Legacy campaign is a wonderful opportunity to support the church and bring to life the reality of our love and adoration of God who has loved us first. It is a way for us to express our gratitude and longing for our Lord, to tell the story of our rich heritage and the beauty and fullness of our faith through our family’s home – God’s home. Once again, we cannot over emphasize the fact that we would not be able to do any of this without your prayers and financial support, including your pledges for the renovation. Please be aware that there remains a great need for an increase in the number of pledges for our Legacy Fund to make the church renovation a successful reality. If you haven’t made a pledge, please prayerfully consider making it. If you have already made a pledge commitment, please help us to encourage others to do so. Our renovation needs the participation of all who love God. The Legacy of Holy Family requires our unified collaboration and support as a community – a community united as members of the Body of Christ. Your kindness and generosity are a blessing and are sincerely appreciated. Together we can practice and keep our Catholic Christian faith alive – passing on the beauty, the fullness, and the legacy of our faith to future generations. Thank you!

Breaking Open the Word - Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Readings: 1 Kings 17:10-16 • Psalm 146:7-10 • Hebrews 9:24-28 • Mark 12:38-44

OVERVIEW: In the 9th century B.C. the ten northern tribes of Israel seceded from the southern kingdom of Judah and its capitol in Jerusalem after rebelling against Solomon’s tyrannical son, Rehoboam who boasted “My little finger is thicker than my father’s loins!” His rival, Jeroboam, led the northern tribes not only into political rebellion, but religious schism and idolatry by building alternate sanctuaries where he set up golden calves (young bulls actually) for the people to worship. He did this so they wouldn’t be tempted to go to Jerusalem. Consequently, the people who lived in the northern territories, like the widow in this week’s first reading, had been subjected to a corrupted form of Judaism. About fifty years later, Elijah, the subject of this week’s first reading, appears on the scene. Elijah was called by God to lead the people of the north back to the Lord and true worship. The poor widow who Elijah stayed with represents all those in Israel who remained faithful to the covenant and believed in God despite the apostasy of their leaders. She expressed her faith by giving Elijah the last of her oil and flour. The widow Zarephath thus foreshadows the poor widow in this week’s gospel. Like her predecessor in the first reading, the widow in the gospel stands in stark contrast to the Scribes and Pharisees and other leaders who were more concerned about their power and prestige than fidelity to God and serving the people. Jesus holds her up as a model of faith and commitment for his disciples, and us, to follow. Finally, the second reading continues the discourse on Christ the high priest who gave himself “once for all to take away sin by his sacrifice” (Heb. 9:26). While Christ died ‘once for all’ the benefits of his sacrifice are made available to us through the Eucharist, enabling us to live lives of self-giving, sacrificial love like the widows in the other readings. They gave all that they had. We are challenged to do the same.

CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH: “Charity is the greatest social commandment. It respects others and their rights. It requires the practice of justice, and it alone makes us capable of it. Charity inspires a life of self-giving: "Whoever seeks to gain his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will preserve it.” [No. 1889]

POPE FRANCIS: “I like to see the Church in this figure, the Church which is, in a sense, a widow, because she waiting for her Bridegroom who will return ... But she has her Bridegroom in the Eucharist, in the Word of God, in the poor, yes: but she is still waiting for his return. This is the attitude of the Church... This widow was not important; the widow’s name did not appear in the newspapers. No one knew her. She had no university degrees... nothing. Nothing. She didn’t shine of her own light. This is what makes me see the Church in the figure of this woman. The Church must not shine on her own light, but the light that comes from her Bridegroom.” [Daily Meditations, 11.24.14]

LIFE APPLICATION: The two widows in this week’s readings both inspire and challenge us to live out the Gospel in a radical way. They demonstrate deep and authentic faith by giving everything they had out of their love for God. Though they had little in the way of material possessions, they were rich in their love of God. They epitomize true discipleship by putting their faith into action without counting the cost and without drawing attention to themselves. Though they were nothing in the eyes of the world, God surely noticed them. And that’s all that really matters in the end. Would that all of us had such faith! Faith like that would free us to give ourselves completely and set the world on fire. Jesus of course demonstrates the fullness of his love for us by giving himself absolutely and completely, even unto death, death on a cross..
