WORDS BY RESHMA MADHI PHOTOS BY SI BRANDON STYLING BY TILLIE PEEL/BEARDED GYPSY

omen are centre-stage at this year’s Village Green. Here we talk to four young artists at the beginning of their music careers about being Wfemale in a male dominated industry and who they take their inspiration from.

Making main stage debuts will be Katy For Kings, winner of Essex Undiscovered 2017, Ruti, who won The Voice in 2018, and BBC 6 Music featured artist Beckie Margaret, while 14 year old Scarlett Taylor will perform on the Oak Stage and takes up a place at the BRIT School in September. They are all carving out their own paths in music. We spoke to them about equality, succeeding as a woman in the music industry and of course, playing Village Green.

Beckie, who is signed to local label Cool Thing Records and has had support from the likes of BBC 6 Music's Steve Lamacq, is sceptical that women are more supported. “But I’d say we are coming with a kick now. A lot of women have more to say. The music industry is still very much a man’s world but I think the females in it are strong but there needs to be more of us.”

For Katy, the future isn’t just about women. “The future of music is in the hands of anyone that wants to make it. I think it’s anyone’s game.” Katy hails from Chelmsford and has built considerable support across Essex, kickstarted by winning Essex Undiscovered in 2017. She released her first EP and played Village Green the same year.

Gigging locally since she was a young teen, she had a chance encounter with songwriter and producer Chris Bourne (brother to Busted’s James). They hit it off and have been working together ever since. She has also had the opportunity of working with record producer John Fields who worked with Miley Cyrus.. >

18 TRAWLER: VILLAGE GREEN 2019 TRAWLER: VILLAGE GREEN 2019 19 “That passion is something you can’t take away... Whether you are male, female whatever. It’s that Katy appreciates the partnerships she has managed to find now want, need to keep playing and for the future. “I’m going to stick with who I’m surrounded by because they are really good people who support and help and regardless of being big me progress.” or small it doesn’t matter.” For Scarlett, having grown up doing a lot of performing such Scarlett Taylor as musical theatre, singing and gigging feels like a natural progression. She has been tipped as a local young rising star, For these young women, their musical taste is constantly having taken part in young musicians open mic nights, through evolving. Scarlett mentions how inspired local enterprise SoSlam, which supports, promotes and her to write and play the ukulele at first. “But I’ve moved and develops local music. explored more genres. I’m quite into punk rock but still love country music.” Scarlett considers current mainstream music; Her mother, Esme, accompanied her to our photoshoot and “A lot of the lyrics and music are meaningless; it doesn’t talk said how passion is the most important thing, regardless of about subjects that are important or inspiring.” She intends to gender. She agrees with Beckie don’t know if that’s just because that’s what got me into music that the industry is still very much male-dominated but feels or just that age I was but I do like her ‘Red’ album.” Two big there are a lot more women supporting women. “There’s not influences for Katy at the moment are John Mayer and Joey necessarily more representation but there’s a lot of writing and Landreth but she is also more inclined to listen to early 90s or guitar collectives that I’ve seen and it’s really important that we 80s music as that’s what she grew up with. “I just choose to empower each other if no one else does.” listen to what I do.”

52 TRAWLER: VILLAGE GREEN 2019 TRAWLER: VILLAGE GREEN 2019 53 rtist Village is a new sculptural exhibition launching at Metal’s Village Green Festival in AChalkwell Park. Experimenting with alternative formats for displaying and experiencing contemporary art, the project asks the artists to step away from the traditional white cube setting and create artwork for a more challenging and less hierarchical context of an outdoor public park and community festival.

The participating artists are Chloe Brooks, Ali Eisa, Brian Griffiths and Milly Peck. After spending one week in residence at Metal’s Chalkwell Hall familiarising themselves with the culture and histories of Southend, each artist is now developing individual sculptural responses to the town and the park based on their own artistic interests. The first phase of the project will see all of the finished artworks exhibited at Village Green, amongst the excitement of a busy and diverse festival environment.

After Village Green the artworks will then remain in the park until 4th August allowing visitors to experience the artworks at their leisure in a calmer and more relaxed environment.

Artist Village has been organised by Jon Kipps, an artist/curator from Southend. The project has been made possible through kind support from Arts Council England and Metal.

You can follow the project by visiting www.artistvillage.co.uk This website is the online base for Artist Village. Lots more content will be added as the project grows, so please check back over the coming weeks to keep up to date! WORDS & PORTRAIT: JON KIPPS & PORTRAIT: WORDS ARTIST VILLAGE ARTIST
