August 18 to August 24, 2012 - The Upper Hunter Entertainer - 5 food & wine The Taste of the Region The region is steeped in history. It is Australia’s oldest continuous grape growing region and in 1848 one of Australia’s first wine shows was held here in the Hunter Valley. The Hunter Valley Wine Show has been held continuously since 1974 and is regarded as the premier regional wine show of Australia. This is due in no small measure to the quality of the judging panels it continues to attract. The Hunter Valley Wine Show was chaired for 9 years by the late Mr Len Evans AO OBE. In 2003 Mr Evans retired and handed the reins to Mr Iain Riggs who continued to chair the show and gather an impressive list of Australian and International judges before retiring after the 2011 Show. In 2012 the Hunter Valley Wine Show committee welcome Mr Jim Chatto as the new Chairman of Judges and look forward to a new era. Medals awarded in the Clear Image Hunter Valley Wine Show are highly regarded in the marketplace. 2012 Exhibitors Tasting The Exhibitors Tasting will be held on THURSDAY 16 AUGUST 2012 from 9:00am until 11:30am sharp at the School of Infantry. If one ever needed proof that jazz is alive and well in the Newcastle and Hunter regions, consider this. Two hundred and fifty jazz musicians are performing at the 2012 Newcastle Jazz Festival from August 24th to August 26th. The Newcastle Jazz Festival is celebrating its Silver Anniversary from Friday 24th August to Sunday 26th August. There’ll be 69 hours of great jazz to enjoy from 45 bands in up to five rooms in the Newcastle City Hall. Some of Australia’s best jazz musicians will take part including Andy Firth, Bob Barnard, Emma Hamilton, Bruce Mathiske and his String Band, Lee Gunness, Dick and Christa Hughes, Sandy Evans, Steve Hunter and from Melbourne Shirazz and the eight piece Andrew Nolte Orchestra. “The Newcastle Jazz Festival is one of Australia’s most popular jazz festivals,” Joint Festival Coordinator Doug Saxon revealed. “It’s been going for 25 years and now attracts the best musicians from all around the country, and jazz lovers who want to hear – and perhaps dance to – some really outstanding music.” Above Right: Bruce Mathiske, Above Left: Emma Hamilton. “In fact, the Festival atmosphere is like that of one big party.” Below: Shirazz “There are usually four or five groups performing simultaneously - but in different rooms - in the magnificent, old Art-Deco Newcastle City Hall. So those who attend are absolutely spoiled for choice of who to see and what style of jazz to hear.” “We’ve got everything from traditional to swing, to contemporary... Australian jazz legends to emerging new talent... professional jazz musicians to school and college groups... raucous Big Bands to intimate jazz guitar. Their one common feature (apart from playing jazz!) is they are all well-worth hearing.” We’d suggest you go to the website and check out the whole line-up - www.newcastlejazz.com.au or phone Susan 49 422 906, Val 49 296 315 Weekend and session passes are available from Ticketek or the Civic Theatre Box Office, phone 4929 1977.
