Major Growth Projects Deeping the Harbor Deepening the harbor is essential to meet the needs of larger cargo ships transiting the Suez and Panama Canals as those vessels deliver cargo to The Port of Jacksonville terminals. A 47-foot depth for the federal channel will position The Port of Jacksonville as the first U.S. East Coast port of call for fully loaded New Panamax class vessels. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) conducted a comprehensive, years-long economic, engineering and environmental study of the project. In June 2017, The Port of Jacksonville’s Board of Directors allocated the first phase of port funding to the USACE for construction and environmental monitoring. Construction is set to begin by early 2018. Along with significant state funding already in place, the $484 million, 11-mile project recently received $21.5 million in federal funds along with a new start designation making it eligible for further federal dollars.

Mile Point As the Intracoastal Waterway and St. Johns River converge at Mile Point, the largest, deep-draft container vessels calling The Port of Jacksonville's terminals can only enter the harbor twice daily at high tide. Completing the Mile Point project will significantly reduce this restriction, saving carriers and shippers time as these ships unload and load at The Port of Jacksonville terminals. Currently, larger container ships can only travel the St. Johns River during two four-hour periods of the day due to the tidal effects at the Mile Point location. Strong currents threaten these ships whose heavy cargo makes them less navigable, creating a potential safety hazard as well as significant delays where ships are forced to wait for high tides. The improvement will correct cross-currents that keep larger ships from using the channel on ebb tide. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is overseeing the construction of the project. Crews are currently excavating along the shore and laying rock mats underwater that will serve as the foundation for the western training wall. Phase I should be completed in the fall. Phase II will begin a year later and focus on restoring marshlands. The state has advanced $43.5 million for design and construction of the Mile Point harbor improvement project.

Intermodal Container Transfer Facility The Port of Jacksonville’s ICTF at Dames Point serves The Port of Jacksonville’s terminals: The TraPac Container Terminal at Dames Point and the Marine Terminal. The direct transfer of containers between vessels and trains speeds up the shipment process and reduces the number of trucks on the road. Ceres Rail Services manages the day-to-day operations and maintenance of the facility.Rail that connects to CSX’s main line allows for two unit trains each day (one inbound and one outbound) carrying up to 200 containers each. Two truck lanes allow vehicles to transport containers to and from the adjacent shipping terminals. Upgrades to wharves, on-dock rail and terminal pavement areas are under construction. These capital improvements – made possible by $100 million in federal and state funds – will enable The Port of Jacksonville to build the port of the future Source: JAXPORT.com Port of Jacksonville Facts > The Port of Jacksonville is one of only 16 US Strategic Ports on-call to move military > Jacksonville is the No. 1 container port complex in Florida moving more than one cargo for national defense (and the only one in Florida) million containers last year > It offers direct trade with Asian ports through both the Panama and Suez Canals > The Port of Jacksonville is a top vehicle handling port in the nation > The Port partners handle containerized cargo, automobiles, recreational boats and > The Port supports more than 132,000 jobs and contributes $27 billion to the regional construction equipment, dry and liquid bulk, oversized and specialty cargoes The economy every year Jacksonville Port serves 17 of the top 20 global ocean carriers > For every dollar invested in the Jacksonville harbor deepening project, more than $24 > The Port handled 8.2 million tons of cargo last year will be returned to the state of Florida Source: JAXPORT.com > The Port of Jacksonville’s Foreign Trade Zone No. 64 is the 3rd largest of Florida’s 20 FTZs, based on combined value of import and export trade passing through it WHY JACKSONVILLE
