Special Note: The following article was released in July of 2014. It had so much impact on players’ games and lives in a positive way that I decided to release it again! May anyone reading it for the first time (or one more time) discover a special heartfelt meaning to its content! Let it be a daily reminder of what is really important in our billiard journey! FINDING THE “MISSING LINKS” TO YOUR GAME! I can still vividly remember my first job as a “ boy” at Elsie’sPool Room in Minonk, IL. Seeing the beautiful rainbow colors of the pool balls as they rolled over the green felt and hearing the gentle clicking sound of one ball against another still remain a foundational “sight and sound” image of my introduction to pool at the youthful age of ten. Elsie had a special connection to the billiard venue with her magnetic smile and joyful spirit, but displayed a disciplined control over those in the room that wanted to cause trouble or present anything other than a positive and productive side to the games being played. My early training experience helped me develop a “first love” for the game of pool and would provide for me solid “roots of reference” for future “game and life” experiences, as I learned how pool should be played and how customers / players should be treated in the right way.

When I went to college I started to realize a “new side” to pool that was counter to the principles Elsie had taught me. My exposure to back room wagers being offered by some players needing a few extra dollars for gas, food, or whatever seemed to pull me away from my “first love” for the game and drain my joy for it in the process. After graduation I started playing in pro events and my game skills grew, particularly in bank pool, my favorite game at the time. One night in 1972 an individual asked me to play some “banks”. A few hours later my wallet, but more importantly, my heart were broken – BIG TIME! Something was definitely “missing” in my game and the “joy of the roll” seemed lost.

I had a good job and could recover from the financial loss; however, my heart had felt a “hurt” for the game I loved that would remain forever a valued lesson for my billiard journey. At that moment I realized if I could hurt that much “inside”, then I wondered how many others might have felt this “hurt” from my past challenges if I beat them. I did not want to be the reason for that happening in the future, so I stopped this style of playing pool without any hint of withdrawal pains. In order to satisfy my competitive urges, I followed the tournament trail and combined that with a love for show and / or teaching engagements in a tent-making career endeavor that remains to present day.

I believe Elsie’s Pool Room provided a valuable “missing link” to the game for me! The “first love” I felt in that disciplined environment centered around the “sight and sound” of the pool balls and the camaraderie shared by all that were blessed to be there to experience the heartfelt beauty, promise, and vision of our sport. No one got “hurt” and each game played became a special “game and life” victory. A few years later I discovered the REAL “miss- ing link” – a spiritual perspective of stewardship over the game I loved. May each of you realize / discover your “missing links” which are so vital to rekindle your “first love” of the game for truly “enjoying the roll” until next time when… The “Doctor’s In” The Drs In...

Team Opening Ceremonies... In Rochester, Minnesota! Saturday morning at 8:30a sharp, the VNEA welcomed all the July 16-19, 2020 Teams. As in years past, VNEA Director of Marketing & Promo- tions Brian Elliott welcomed the hundreds of players and family members to the team tournament. Brian also compli- mented the Charter Holders, parents and the junior players themselves for making this year a special event. Brian thanked VNEA Juniors! the junior teams for wearing terrific team uniforms this year and applauded the players for their classy attire. The Cer- emony kicked-off with the annual “Parade of Flags” featuring all of the states and countries involved in the event. Twelve anxious youths participated as flag bearers in the procession and the U.S. and New Zealand anthems were proudly played. This part of the ceremony is very important to the players as they all take great pride in their state, province and coun- try. Elliott then continued the ceremony by recognizing the 2019 Singles Winners and presenting them with their well- deserved trophies. This years awards were incredible “Charlie Cougar” acrylic statues that were, again, the hit of the week- end! As flash-bulbs lit up the arena floor, so did the player and parent smiles and pride. Brian also announced the 2019 2019 Control Stage Professionals VNEA Junior Appreciation Award Recipients. This years class l-r: Ace Leiding, Melena Thompson, Nils McConnell, included: Melena Thompson, Chris Talbot, Ace Leiding, and Ed Borgia, Marshall Kohtz, Brian Elliott Bob & Shari Lund. Congratulations. As many other dignitaries were recognized and the days schedule was read, you could feel the excitement in the room for the Team competition that was about to unfold. And unfold it did as the “Shot Heard Around The World” took place with every match starting with a countdown and “simultaneous breakshot”!

Prizes... There were a total of 36 beautiful GW Cues given away to the Top 4 places in the 3 divisions of team play. Dave Pearson donated these great cues! Thank you so much, Dave. There were also 20 Cues (compliments of Valley) and 20 Cuestick Holders that were given to the winners and runners-up of the competitive mini-tournaments. Winners of the ever-popular Junior/Junior Scotch Doubles also received Cues & Charlies!

The VNEA Junior Championships... A 1-Of-A-Kind Experience!

The 2019 VNEA Pool Leagues ended with the greatest Junior Tournament in the world! Every year there’s no way you cannot help but smile when you see so many kids and their mums and dad’s enjoy pool. With the hard work of the VNEA team and it’s volunteers, we continue to bring happiness to everyone’s lives. Each day, Brian walks around arena and captures some amazing photos from the faces of the VNEA Kids. I shared a video that I took from Opening Ceremonies just so that everyone can see the excitement that we all get to experience at this event. The proud kids who hold their state and their country flags in- cluding Team New Zealand who wake up every day with a smile on their faces and play incredible pool after traveling from the other side of the world. The players love exchanging pool cards and everyone anticipates the BREAK HEARD AROUND THE WORLD where everyone breaks at once to start the Team competition. And it’s fun to watch Jerry Briesath who has been doing this for all twenty nine years, still have the same smile from when he first started. How can we beat this?! It will be hard to do when all we do is experience the smiles and the fun in the lives of the VNEA kids. But I have a feeling that Gregg, Brian, Rhonda and Jim have something special to celebrate for the 30th. A special shout out to Marshall, Ed and all the referees who donate their time to be with the kids so they can enjoy this great weekend. The 30th cannot come quick enough and it will be where it first started in Rochester, Minnesota. Brian asked me if I was doing the 30th, I said, “try and keep me away”! I think this goes for all the professionals and team members who work hard to bring you a great event. See everyone next year and check the next issue of 1-On-1 With The Wizard titled, “East Meets West”!

28 8-Ball News & Views Billiards With Briesath Pool In Summer vs Winter

By Jerry Briesath

Most players realize that they don’t play as well in the Summer as they do in the Winter. One reason might be that players generally don’t play us much in the Summer as they do in the Winter. But there is another reason why pool is tougher in the Summer and the culprit is humidity. When Summer tempera- tures start to go up, the humidity goes up, and that’s when things start to hap- pen. Humidity drastically increases the friction between the ball and the cloth. When you put backspin on the cue ball, the increased friction rubs the back spin off the cue ball much quicker than in the Winter months when it is dry. Therefore, you must shoot stop shots and draw shots with quite a bit more power in the Summer than in the Winter. Another problem that humidity causes is when you are banking balls. That same increased friction causes the ball to come off the rail at a shorter angle then during the Winter months. Now you know why pool is tougher in the Summer than it is in the Winter.
