FLYERS VS. BOSTON The Flyers and Bruins completed their season series this year, with Philadelphia taking two wins in a shootout and Boston winning 2-0 in Philly on March 10 in what turned out to be the final game of the season for both teams. The March 10 loss snapped a nine-game winning streak for the Flyers.

The two clubs have played six playoff series over their history – four times in the span of five seasons in the , and two consecutive years in 2010 and 2011. The Bruins eventually answered with third period goals from Danton Heinen and Brad Marchand, and after Hart stopped a David Pastrnak penalty shot with 4:56 to play, the game proceeded to the shootout. Farabee’s goal came in the first round, and Hart clinched it with another stop on Pastrnak in the third round. Hart made 26 saves in regulation and to earn the win, while Jaroslav Halak stopped 27 of 29. Stars of the Game: 1 – Joel Farabee; 2 – Travis Konecny; 3 – Brad Marchand.

Monday, January 13, 2020 – Flyers 6, Boston 5 (SO) at Wells Fargo Center: Travis Sanheim tied the game with 7:02 to play in the third period and Travis Konency was the only successful shootout participant as the Flyers erased a 5-2 deficit to take a 6-5 shootout win. The Bruins picked up the game’s first two goals before Kevin Hayes made it 2-1 on a power play with 1:38 left in the first period. The teams traded goals over the first 72 seconds of the second period, with David Pastrnak starting it off 33 seconds in only to see Sanheim get it back at the 1:12 mark. Boston got two more in the next 6 ½ minutes, from Charlie Coyle and David Krejci, to make it 5-2. The comeback began with two goals in just over 90 seconds in the second – Sean Couturier scored with 6:48 to play, followed by one from Connor Bunnaman 1:34 later. Sanheim’s second goal was the only one scored in the third. After a scoreless overtime, Konecny tallied in the fifth shootout round, while Carter Hart was able to keep out all the shootout attempts that reached him. 2019-20 SEASON SUMMARY The Flyers were one of the NHL’s hottest teams at the time of the NHL’s pause following the games of March 11. They were 9-1 in their final 10 games before the break, having rattled off a nine-game winning streak from Feb. 18 – March 7 that was ended by the Bruins on March 10 in the Flyers’ final game before the pause. The Flyers were in Tampa preparing to take on the Lightning on March 12 when the season stopped.

The Flyers were 19-6-1 over their final 26 games from January 8 – March 10, which tied them with the Bruins for the best record in the NHL during that stretch. They outscored their opponents 94-62 during that run and operated at 23.5 percent on the power play, while going 82.9 percent on the penalty kill. The Flyers were also 54.7 percent on faceoffs during that run and 54.6 percent on the season, both of which led the league.

The Flyers started the season in Europe, playing an exhibition game in Lausanne, Switzerland before opening the 2019-20 season with a 4-3 win over the in Prague, Czech Republic, on October 4. That was 298 days ago, or nine months and 24 days. Following the Europe trip, the Flyers returned home for one game before embarking on a West Coast swing. Between their departure for Switzerland on September 27 and their return home from Edmonton on October 17, the Flyers traveled more than 13,500 miles over the course of 20 days.

The Flyers compiled a record of 22-8-5 against the other 11 teams that qualified for the expanded Eastern Conference playoff format, good for a .700 points percentage. The only playoff teams against which the Flyers had a sub-.500 record were the NY Islanders (0-2-1) and Tampa Bay (0-2-0).

The Flyers did not complete their scheduled season series against NYI, NYR, PIT, TBL, DET, NJD, NYR and BUF in the East, losing one game off the season against each team. From the West, the Flyers dropped one game each against MIN, EDM, STL, and DAL. The Flyers lost their entire season series against the , as both games were scheduled to take place in the final two weeks of the season.

AROUND THE RINK

The Flyers head into the 2020 with a wide mix of playoff experience on their roster. Twelve skaters have appeared in at least one playoff game for the Flyers, led by Claude Giroux, who has appeared in 69 playoff games since the 2008-09 season.

Giroux – 69 van Riemsdyk – 39 (59 career) Voracek – 30 (34 career) Couturier – 24 Raffl – 19 Gostisbehere – 12 Laughton – 9 Provorov – 6 Konecny – 6 Lindblom – 4 Hagg – 2 Sanheim – 2

The Flyers have another seven skaters who will be seeing their first NHL playoff action:

Eight other Flyer skaters who will be making their playoff debut for the club have experience elsewhere – a total of 325 playoff games, seven conference final appearances, three Stanley Cup Finals and one championship:

Niskanen – 125 (70 WSH, 39 PIT, 16 DAL) 2018 Stanley Cup, ECF 2018 (WSH) &2013 (PIT). Niskanen has advanced to the second round or further seven times in his career. Braun – 84 (SJS), SCF 2016, WCF 2016 &2019 Thompson – 62 (36 ANA, 22 TBL, 4 LAK) WCF 2017 (ANA) &ECF 2011 (TBL) Hayes – 40 (34 NYR, 6 WPG) 2015 SCF &ECF (NYR) Pitlick – 6 (DAL) Grant – 4 (ANA) Welinski – 3 (ANA) Andreoff – 1 (LAK)

In addition to the above, Flyers goaltender Brian Elliott has 45 games of playoff experience – 33 with STL and 4 each with OTT, CGY and the Flyers. He made the 2016 WCF with STL. The rest of the Flyers’ goaltending corps – Carter Hart, Alex Lyon and Kirill Ustimenko – are awaiting their first Stanley Cup Playoff action.

The Flyers last won a playoff series in 2012 when they took the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals vs. Pittsburgh in six games. The Flyers have four players remaining on their roster from that team – Claude Giroux, Jake Voracek and Sean Couturier have been with the team ever since, while James van Riemsdyk departed the Flyers following that run and played six seasons in Toronto before coming back to Philadelphia in 2018. Giroux led the Flyers in scoring in that series with 17 points (8G, 9A) while Voracek was third on the roster with 10 points (2G, 8A).

Giroux and van Riemsdyk were each part of Philadelphia’s 2010 Stanley Cup Final run, which marked van Riemsdyk’s rookie season and Giroux’s second NHL campaign. Giroux had 10 goals and 11 assists in that playoff seson, including the overtime game-winner in Game 3 of the Final vs. Chicago. Tampa Bay defenseman Braydon Coburn is the only other remaining player from that team that is still active in this year’s Stanley Cup Playoffs. Flyers assistant coach Ian Laperriere was also a part of that team, as was today’s NBC rinkside analyst, Brian Boucher. Philadelphia Flyers: Head Coach and Player Bios Head Coach: Alain Vigneault Alain Vigneault was named the 21st head coach in Flyers history on April 15, 2019.
