JOHN J. CONBOY Athletic Director

John J. (Jack) Conboy was named La Salle Athletic Director on January

3, 1969, succeeding James J. Henry, who retired January 1 after 35 years as Explorer A.D.

Conboy, 45, graduated from La Salle in 1950. He recently retired from the U.S. Army, after 20 years service, with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. A veteran of three wars

(World War II, Korea and Vietnam), Conboy served on the ROTC staff at La Salle from 1960 to 1964.

Conboy was a member of St. Joseph's Prep's last city championship football team in 1939. After three years of World War II service in Europe, Conboy enrolled at Georgetown where he played football for two years before transferring to La Salle.

He was assistant football coach at St. Joseph's Prep from 1948 to 1950. He also coached Army football and basketball teams in Europe and Hawaii and organized a triathlon team at La Salle which produced three present members of the U.S. Army modern pentathlon team—Don Walheim, Bill Conroy and Gary McNulty.

Conboy, who holds an MBA degree in Industrial Management from Temple University, resides in Drexel Hill with his wife, Anne, and four children.

PAUL W. WESTHEAD Head Basketball Coach

Paul W. Westhead, successful assistant coach at St. Joseph's Col- lege the past two years, makes his debut as head basketball coach at La Salle College during the 1970-71 season.

Westhead, 31, led the St. Joseph's freshman team to a 21-2 record- best in the school's history— in 1969-70 and finished in a tie with Pennsylvania for the mythical Little Big Five title. He had also served as assistant athletic director under Jack McKinney since 1968. Previously, Westhead had established himself as one of the finest young coaches in the area at Cheltenham High School. In four years (1964-68) at the suburban Philadelphia school, Paul gradually built a winning tradition. In 1968, he took his squad to the P.I.A.A. playoffs for the first time in the school's history and advanced all the way to the state finals.

Westhead received his bachelor's degree from St. Joseph's in 1961, and a master's degree in English from Villanova, in 1963.

He has done work towards his Ph.D. at Temple University and has served on the English faculty both at Cheltenham and St. Joseph's.

Following completion of his studies at Villanova, Westhead went to the University of Dayton for a year as assistant coach and English instructor.

Westhead, his wife, Catherine, and three children live in suburban Drexel Hill, Pa. JOSEPH C. O'CONNOR Assistant Basketball Coach

Joseph C. O'Connor, who coached Bishop Eustace Prep's basketball teams to a fantastic 69-6 record over his last three seasons, makes his debut as Paul Westhead's as- sistant in 1970-71.

In addition to helping Westhead with the varsity, the 29-year-old coach will handle the Explorer freshman team.

O'Connor had been on the staff at suburban New Jersey's Bishop Eustace for seven years, the last four as head coach. In 1968-69, Eustace went all the way to win the New Jersey State Championship. Joe's overall won-loss record as head coach was 78-17.

O'Connor, a resident of Upper Darby, is a 1963 graduate of St. Joseph's College with a bachelor's degree in history.

PAUL GALLAGHER Assistant Basketball Coach

Paul Gallagher, a former member of the Explorer varsity and later head coach at Monsignor Bonner High School, makes his debut as a La Salle assistant under Paul Westhead in 1970-71.

The 1964 La Salle graduate was a re- serve on the Explorer varsity for two years. He served as assistant coach at Bonner before becoming head coach at St. James High, in Chester in 1966-67.

Gallagher returned to Bonner as head coach the following year. His three year won-loss record of 57-19 included a fine 24-6 mark in 1969-70. The Bonner quintet finished first in the Catholic League's southern division and third in the playoffs last year, capping the season by winning the Alhambra Catholic Invitational, in Cumberland, Md.

Gallagher, 27, was co-captain of Bonner's city championship court team in 1960.

Paul will continue to maintain a securities business with the Equity Funding Corp. He, his wife, Sue, and their two children live in sub- urban Havertown, Pa.

THE ATHLETE

The young man who accepts the exciting challenge of representing

the Explorers on basketball courts throughout the nation will be one

who recognizes that he is supplementing his classroom experience

with athletic participation. He will learn to discipline himself toward

achieving a goal; to work in close association with other men, and

to acquire judgment and responsibility. As such a student athlete,

he will be, above all, a gentleman. PROSPECTS FOR THE 1970-71 SEASON

By Coach Paul Westhead

As a first year coach at La Salle, it is somewhat difficult to evaluate the potential of our team. We do have experience and a solid leader in senior Ken Durrett, a Helms Ail-American the past two years, but we will be handicapped by a lack of size and depth. Our most serious loss from last year's team was the great shooting ability of graduated co- captain Fran Dunphy.

Seven seniors do return to our varsity this year, including Durrett, Bob Fields, Ronny Kennedy, Bill Michuda, Greg Cannon, Bob Walsh and Jorge Garayta. Kenny Durrett, our leading scorer and rebounder in both his sophomore and junior years, seems destined to achieve one of the finest career records in La Salle history. In addition, Bobby Fields, who proved to be a fine shooter last year, should help us again this year. Ronny Ken- nedy, our second tallest player, will have to give us strong rebounding if we're to succeed. Bill Michuda and Greg Cannon, a potential playmaker, were occasional starters last year, and with greater opportunity to shoot, they must supply us some needed offensive punch. Bob Walsh, a hustler who saw sporadic action in the past, and Jorge Garayta could see more playing time this year.

Joining these veterans will be sophomore prospects Jim Crawford, Tom

Fuhs, Bill Fox and John Maull. Another possibility is junior Jeff Piccone, who was ineligible in the second semester of last year.

My philosophy throughout my career has been to put great stress on defense, which I feel is the foundation of team morale. Offensively, we will look for the fast break, but generally we will play patterned basketball.

Our schedule is rugged, but we hope to surprise some of our oppo- nents, many of whom are nationally ranked.

Jl MEET THE EXPLORERS (*) Returning Lettermen

*Kenneth L. Durrett Senior 21 6-7 188 Pittsburgh, Pa. Captain

Two years ago when sophomore Ken Durrett was tearing up Phila- delphia's famed Big Five, Bill Con-

lin, the highly-respected basketball writer of the Philadelphia Daily ". News, called him, . . the most polished all-around big man ever to hit the Big Five." By today's standards, Durrett

isn't really a "big man." The former scholastic Ail-American from Pitts- burgh's Schenley High (coach Willard

Fisher) is a mere 6-7, 188 pounds.

But to most of his opponents, Kenny's size is quite deceptive. Says one: "The way he moves around the basket, I'd swear he was seven feet tall." Former Explorer Ail-American and later all-pro with the old Phila- delphia Warriors and , Tom Gola, who coached at La Salle the past two years, says that Durrett has "definite" pro potential.

"He has to go very high in next year's pro draft," says Gola. "He's

quick, handles the ball well, has excellent scoring ability and . . . just has the potential to make it big."

La Salle enjoyed its greatest season in history in 1968-69, finishing second nationally with a 23-1 record. Three members of that club, Larry Cannon, Roland Taylor, and Bernie Williams, are now playing

professional basketball. None of them led the Explorers in scoring during their senior year because Durrett exceeded his fondest hopes by averaging 20 ppg. He also led the club in rebounding (11.8), field goal percentage (52.3%), field goals (191), free throws (98) and total points (480).

Statistically, it was the greatest rookie season ever registered by an

Explorer. This is quite an accomplishment when one considers the

impressive list of former La Salle stars including Gola, Larry Foust, Hubie Marshall, Williams and Cannon among others.

Last season as a junior, Durrett scored 24.3 ppg., good enough to rank him among the top scorers in the nation, and the second best scoring average in La Salle history. He also led the team in rebounding (12.1 rpg.). Only Gola (750 and 690) and Marshall (674) have ever scored more points in a single season than Durrett's 632 last year. And they all played in more games than Kenny's 26 as the Explorers finished with a 14-12 record which included the ECAC Quaker City Tourney title.

Durrett's 44- performance against Lafayette was a new La Salle single-game mark. So was his 20-field goal total he registered that night. Kenny scored his 1000th career point against American University in his 46th varsity game, earlier than any previous Explorer. For his efforts, Kenny was named to the Helms Ail-American team for the second year in a row. He was also named most valuable player in the Middle Atlantic Conference's eastern division and the outstand- ing player of the Philadelphia district. In addition, Ken was a unanimous All Big Five selection. General business major.

Bob had some explosive performances, particularly against Niagara

(33 pts.), American (31), and Creighton (27).

SERIES RECORD: LA SALLE 14, SYRACUSE 6 OUTLOOK: Last year's Orange five could put the ball through the hoop, but a leaky defense al- lowed 85.8 pts. per game, most ever by a Syracuse team. Key to success may lie in how well SU overcomes the stumbling block of DEFENSE. Graduation has taken top scorer Ernie Austin, but coach Danforth has 6-7 senior Bob McDaniel (410 pts., 236 rbs.) and 6-11 Bill Smith (384 pts., 235 rbs.) heading his re- turnees. 5-11 Tom Green is the only experi- enced guard, but 6-1 Greg Kohls and 6-2 soph Mark Wadach should help. 6-3 soph Mike Lee could give Orange a solid corner man while Coach Roy Danforth Finney brothers, senior Bill and soph Bob, (W-21, L-28) possess great firepower.

il 1969-70: REBUILDING EXPLORERS WIN QUAKER CITY, FINISH ABOVE .500 FOURTH YEAR IN A ROW

Led by All-American Ken Durrett, All-MAC guard Fran Dunphy and junior Bobby Fields, coach Tom Gola's 1969-70 La Salle basketballers started strong, slumped and then recovered in February to finish with a 14-12 record, La Salle's fourth consecutive winning season. The up and down year was highlighted by the Explorers' second Quaker City Tournament title, capped in the final game by an upset 89-74 win over Columbia. Along the way the Explorers also knocked off high-powered Niagara, came close (55-47) to upsetting then nationally-ranked Tennessee in the final of the Volunteer Classic, and came close again to defeating NIT- bound Duquesne in Pittsburgh, 67-64. But La Salle suffered its worst Big Five season in history (0-4), losing to underdog Temple, 69-61, dropping a double overtime thriller to St. Joseph's, 101-99, and getting whipped soundly by champion Penn 76-67, and NCAA-bound Villanova, 96-85. And the Explorers also fell victim to a gruelling road schedule and a murderous January. They were 4-8 on the road, and 2-9 in January. Durrett, the 6-7 junior from Pittsburgh selected to the Helms Founda- tion All-America squad last season as a soph, again led the Explorers in scoring and rebounding and smashed several school and city records. Durrett scored 24.3 points a game—good enough to rank him among the top 30 scorers in the nation and the second best season scoring average in La Salle history. He also pulled down more than 12 rebounds a game and was the squad's only consistent rebounder. Ken's 44-point performance against Lafayette set a school record, tied a Big Five record; his 20 field goals that night topped school, Big Five and Palestra records. He scored his 1,000th career point against American University, his 46th varsity game, earlier than any previous Explorer. Among other post-season honors, he was named most valuable player in the Middle Atlantic Conference. Fran Dunphy, co-captain with Durrett and also a member of the MAC All-Star squad, blossomed into the scorer most observers knew he could be. Counting with 15 and 20-footers and gutsy lane drives, Dunphy fought his way to better than 18 points a game and passed off for a team-leading 113 assists. Against Columbia in the Quaker City final, he led La Salle's attack with 24 points, including eight for eight in one stretch, and was named tournament MVP. Fields, a junior playing his first season at La Salle, started slowly but roared ahead with aggressive defense, clutch rebounding and strong shooting from 10 to 15 feet and ended the season scoring 16.4 points and grabbing seven rebounds a game as a guard-forward. He came up with more than a score of key steals and, in the Columbia game, held Jim McMillian to only 15 points. Hit by academic ineligibilities at mid-season, Gola searched for two other starters and finally settled on Ronny Kennedy and Greg Cannon, both of whom turned in standout performances— Kennedy's 16 points and 10 rebounds vs. Villanova and Cannon's defensive job on Calvin Murphy, holding the Niagara superstar to 25 points. Sophs Bill Pleas and Jeff Piccone both contributed valuable strength and talent (Pleas, 21 points vs. West Chester, 19 rebounds vs. Eastern Kentucky; Piccone, 9 points vs. West Chester, 12 rebounds vs. Albright) until they were lost to the squad midway through the season because of academic problems.

For La Salle, and for Tom Gola, it was the end of an era. In two years as head coach, Gola led his teams to 37 wins and 13 losses, and the best season in the school's long basketball history in 1968-69. With Tom as both player and coach for La Salle, Gola teams compiled a fantastic 144-32 record, won a national chammpionship, a national runner-up, an NIT, a Quaker City Tournament and one Number Two national ranking. Perhaps most important, in his two years at the helm, Gola helped recapture some of that 1954 glitter, and helped put La Salle back on the road to basketball stability.

33 1969-70 EXPLORER ATTENDANCE

La Salle played before a total of 128,502 fans during the 1969-70 season for an average of 4,942. The Explorers attracted 66,812 in 14 home appearances for a 4,772 average and 61,690 in 12 road games for an average of 5,141. Largest crowds were 12,500 at Western Ken- tucky and 10,000 for the finals of the Volunteer Classic against Tennessee.

LA SALLE'S NATIONAL RANKING (Final Season Finish)

ASSOCIATED PRESS UNITED PRESS INTERNATIONAL 1949-50— 10th 1951-52— 17th 1952-53—6th 1952-53—4th 1953-54—2nd 1953-54— nth 1954-55—3rd 1954-55—3rd 1968-69—2nd 1968-69— 5th

According to the combined AP and UPI polls for the 1950s, La Salle was the 11th best "team of the decade." The 1968-69 season was the first time the Explorers showed up in the final wire service rankings top twenty since then, although they did appear in the poll for a few weeks during the 1959-60 season and again in 1964-65. La Salle has never finished first for the season in either poll, but did occupy the top rung for a lengthy period during the 1954-55 season.

- p1 ' T THE LA SALLE STORY

La Salle College is now in its 108th year of service to higher educa- tion and the Philadelphia community. The college has been coeduca- tional in the evening division since February, 1967, and in its day school since September, 1970. La Salle was founded March 20, 1863 by the Brothers of the Christian Schools and derives its name from the founder of the Christian Brothers, St. John Baptist de La Salle. By 1929, having outgrown three previous Philadelphia locations, the campus was moved to its present site at 20th Street and Olney Avenue in the East Germantown Section of the city. Since 1945, La Salle has experienced dramatic growth. Before the closing days of the war, La Salle had an enrollment of less than 500 attending only day classes in two original buildings. Today, a total of 6,600 Day and Evening Division students attend La Salle. Plant facilities, valued at only $1.5 million in 1946, have today reached nearly $20 million. There are 24 buildings on the 40-acre campus and further expansion is well under way in the form of a new classroom building and an athletic facilities structure. Ten modern residence halls accommodate 800 out-of-town students. A $2 million, three-story College Union Building, completed in 1959, includes a Little Theater as well as dining halls, assembly rooms, ball- room and other student facilities. The $2.5 million Holroyd Science Center, opened in 1960, houses lecture rooms and laboratory facilities for study and research in Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Physics and Psychology. The David Leo Lawrence Memorial Library, built in 1952, contains 168,000 volumes and

periodical files of some 700 journals, and a new library is being planned. Additional educational areas are located on a 52-acre campus in Elkins Park and on an 80-acre site in Springfield Township. The Army ROTC program, initiated in 1950, is available to freshmen, who may apply for ROTC scholarships for advance studies. Nearly 350 students, including those in advanced courses, are enrolled in the program. La Salle's Day and Evening Division offer degree programs in Arts and Sciences and Business Administration. The 350-member La Salle faculty is composed of Christian Brothers, priest and lay professors.
