PARSHA MATTERS - by Rabbi Chaim Strauchler OTHERING So much meaning is contained within each word of the Torah. How did Egyptian society move so quickly from cherishing the Jewish people (as inheritors of Joseph’s legacy) to enslaving them? Pharaoh transformed us with words of exclusion. With a single verse, the Torah shows this. Pharaoh spoke “to his people” of another people – “Behold, a people – the children of Israel…” Prof. Jonathan Haidt writes about how moral thinking unifies and divides, “It binds us into ideological teams that fight each other as though the fate of the world depended on our side winning each battle. It blinds us to the fact that each team is composed of good people who have something important to say.” Whereas the first words spoken in Sefer Bereshit are “Let there be light,” Pharaoh begins Sefer Shemot with let there be a new darkness. Morality turns on the questions of identity – who is “the us” and who is “the other.” The Ramban famously explains how Pharaoh built upon this foundation the means to murder Jewish children. Much of today’s senseless political strife is driven by an inability to see that each team is composed of good people who have something important to say. Technology makes their words more distant from our eyes and certainly from our hearts. In thinking about the Egyptian galut (exile), it behooves us not just to recall how we have been historically othered, but also how we can fall into the same political trap by “othering” those created in God’s image.
