Perpetually scruffy, mud-stained and mischievous, he is a lovable scamp whose pranks usually end in disaster - for his harassed elders at least. With friends Ginger, Douglas and Henry the Outlaws and the angelic thorn in his side, the lisping Violet Elizabeth Bott, William has rightly joined the literary and radio immortals. William Brown, the loveable rogue created by Richmal Crompton in the s, is as well-received and enjoyed today as he was almost 80 years ago. Martin Jarvis has long been the voice of William, and brings a youthful sense of joy and a childlike excitement to the reading. I've listened to and enjoyed all of the William books read by Martin Jarvis, they are an example of everything a talking book should be. These books were not originally written as kids books but were for adults - they are beautifully crafted pieces of English and an example to everyone of how to tell a short story. Each "Adventure" is about 15 minutes long and follows the exploits of William Brown and his gang - "The Outlaws". Its amazing how understandable his attitudes are even though the stories were first written about 80 years ago and relate to English Middle Class values and households with maids and gardeners etc. Finally if there was an Olympic event for narrators Martin Jarvis would be the multiple Gold medal winner. I can't recommend these books enough but please, please give them a try and Audible please get the rest of the books! Richmal Crompton's stories of William are so delightful I read them over and over and still laugh aloud. Martin Jarvis's narration is spot on and adds so much to the stories. Not a good version of this great classic. No track breaks between stories mean this item is difficult to navigate and tedious to use. Audible does not do Crompton justice. Her brother, John Battersby Crompton Lamburn , also became a writer, remembered under the name John Lambourne for his fantasy novel The Kingdom That Was and under the name "John Crompton" for his books on natural history. She later moved with the school to a new location in Darley Dale , near Matlock , Derbyshire in In order to further her chosen career as a schoolteacher, she won a scholarship to Royal Holloway College , part of the University of London in Englefield Green , Surrey. She took part in the Women's Suffrage movement. In , she returned to St Elphin's as a Classics mistress and later, at age 27, moved to Bromley High School in southeast London where she began her writing in earnest. Cadogan shows that she was an excellent and committed teacher at both schools. Having contracted poliomyelitis , she was left without the use of her right leg in She gave up her teaching career and began to write full-time. Later in her forties, she suffered from breast cancer and had a mastectomy. She never married and had no children; she was an aunt and a great-aunt. Her William stories and her other literature were extremely successful and, three years after she retired from teaching, Crompton was able to afford to have a house The Glebe built in Bromley Common for herself and her mother, Clara. Crompton died in at the age of 78, after a heart attack, [2] in Farnborough Hospital. Crompton had fallen ill on the drive home from visiting her niece's home in Chelsfield, Kent. After feeling unwell during the night, Crompton telephoned friends the next morning and died within an hour of being taken to hospital. Crompton left the copyright of all her books to her niece, Mrs Richmal C. Crompton's best known books are the William stories, about a mischievous year-old schoolboy and his band of friends, known as "The Outlaws". She had written "The Outlaws" in , but it was not published until later. In , the first collection, entitled Just William , was published. She wrote 38 other William books throughout her life. The last, William the Lawless , was published posthumously in The William books sold over twelve million copies in the United Kingdom alone. Illustrations by Thomas Henry contributed to their success. Crompton saw her real work as writing adult fiction. Starting with The Innermost Room , she wrote 41 novels for adults and published nine collections of short stories. Their focus was generally village life in the Home Counties. Though these novels have the same inventiveness and lack of sentimentality as the 'William' books, after the Second World War, such literature had an increasingly limited appeal. Even William was originally created for a grown-up audience, as she saw Just William as a potboiler Cadogan, She was pleased by its success, but seemed frustrated that her other novels and short stories did not receive the same recognition. Her first published tale was published in The Girl's Own Paper in , concerning a little boy named Thomas, a forerunner of William who reacts against authority. The shining black paint of the bicycle was scratched, the handle bars were slightly bent and dulled; William himself was bruised and battered but unbeaten. At last he managed to avoid the fatal magnet of the holly bush, to steer an unsteady ziz-zag course down the drive and out into the road. He had had no particular intention of riding into the road. In fact he was still wearing his befeathered headgear, blacked face, and the mat pinned to his shoulders. It was only when he was actually in the road that he realised that retreat was impossible, that he had no idea how to get off the bicycle. What followed was to William more like a nightmare than anything else. He saw a motor-lorry coming towards him and in sudden panic turned down a side street and from that into another side street. People came out of their houses to watch him pass. Children booed or cheered him and ran after him in crowds. And William went on and on simply because he could not stop. His iron nerve had failed him. He had not even the presence of mind to fall off. He was quite lost. He had left the town behind him and did not know where he was going. But wherever he went he was the centre of attraction. The strange figure with blackened, streaked face, mat flying behind in the wind and a head-dress of feathers from which every now and then one floated away, brought the population to its doors. Some said he had escaped from an asylum, some that he was an advertisement of something. The children were inclined to think he was part of a circus. William himself had passed beyond despair. His face was white and set. His first panic had changed to a dull certainty that this would go on for ever. He would never know how to stop. He supposed he would go right across England. He wondered if he were near the sea now. He wondered if he would ever see his mother and father again. And his feet pedalled mechanically along. They did not reach the pedals at their lowest point; they had to catch them as they came up and send them down with all their might. The picnickers walked down the hill from the little station to the river bank. It was a beautiful morning. Robert, his heart and hopes high, walked beside his goddess, revelling in his nearness to her though he could think of nothing to say to her. But Ethel and Mrs. Clive chattered gaily. He proposed a boat on the river after lunch, and it appeared that Miss Cannon would love it, but Ethel and Mrs. Clive would rather stay on the bank. His cup of bliss was full. It would be his opportunity of sealing lifelong friendship with her, of arranging a regular correspondence, and hinting at his ultimate intentions. He must tell her that, of course, while he was at college he was not in a position to offer his heart and hand, but if she could wait—— He began to compose speeches in his mind. They reached the bank and opened the luncheon baskets. Unhampered by Robert the cook had surpassed herself. They spread the white cloth and took up their position around it under the shade of the trees. Just as Robert was taking up a plate of sandwiches to hand them with a courteous gesture to Miss Cannon, his eyes fell upon the long, white road leading from the village to the riverside and remained fixed there, his face frozen with horror. The hand that held the plate dropped lifelessly back again on to the table-cloth. Their eyes followed his. A curious figure was cycling along the road—a figure with blackened face and a few drooping feathers on its head, and a door-mat flying in the wind. A crowd of small children ran behind cheering. It was a figure vaguely familiar to them all. William came to the end of the road. He did not turn aside to either of the roads by the riverside. He did not even recognise or look at them. With set, colourless face he rode on to the river bank, and straight amongst them. They fled from before his charge. He rode over the table-cloth, over the sandwiches, patties, rolls and cakes, down the bank and into the river. They rescued him and the bicycle. Fate was against Robert even there. It was a passing boatman who performed the rescue. William emerged soaked to the skin, utterly exhausted, but feeling vaguely heroic. He was not in the least surprised to see them.
