ELECTION RESOURCE for the Business Community All Elections Are Important 8 ELECTION RESOURCE for the Business Community All elections are important. This election is no different. On or before November 6, you will be asked to select who will become the Governor (and Lt. Governor), who will serve as 1 of the 2 U.S. Senate seats for the next 6 years, who will serve as your U.S. House of Representatives member for the next 2 years, two individuals who will serve on our Ohio Supreme Court for the next 4 years, who will serve as your Ohio Senate member (in 17 of the seats open this election) for the next 4 years, all 99 Ohio House of Representatives, 1 ballot initiative and a host of other important local issues throughout the state. Some important dates for you and your employees to keep in mind prior to the election are: Wednesday, October 10: Early In-Person Voting (through Monday, November 5). Don’t know where to go to vote in person? Contact your local county board of election. Mailed ballots must be postmarked by November 5. Saturday, November 3: Applications for absentee ballots to be mailed for the November 6 general election must be received by boards of elections by noon (3 days prior to the general election). Absentee ballots returned by U.S. Mail must be postmarked no later than November 5 and received by boards of elections by November 16 (10 days after the general election) to be counted. Tuesday, November 6: Election Day! Deadline to drop-off your ballot in person. Polls open from 6:30a.m. to 7:30p.m. Absentee ballots, either returned in person or via a method other than U.S. Mail, must be received by the boards of election by close of polls. The “2018 Election Resource for the Business Community” was compiled to help provide you with guidance on which candidates have been endorsed by major trade associations and business groups, or have been favorably recognized by an organization for the November 6 general election. Some candidates can claim to be pro-business, but only those individuals with a good track record or who have been thoroughly screened have earned an endorsement by state and national associations that represent the business community. The organizations and offices used to compile this information include: United States Chamber of Commerce (USCC), Ohio Chamber of Commerce (OCC) and OhioBusinessVotes.org, National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), Ohio Farm Bureau Federation (OFB), Ohio Society of CPAs (CPA), Ohio Manufacturers’ Association (OMA), Ohio Secretary of State (SOS), Ohio Republican Party (ORP), the Ohio Democratic Party (ODP), Twitter, Business-Industry Political Action Committee (BIPAC) and Ballotpedia. All of the associations mentioned above choose to endorse or not to endorse for various reasons. You will note below that there are candidates who all associations have endorsed, some who most have endorsed, and others who these associations simply agree to disagree on who the best person is for the job. Please contact the respective association if you would like to know more about how to become a member and their endorsement process. *denotes incumbent 235 Republicans currently hold seats U.S. House of can’t lose more than 17 Representatives 193 Democrats currently hold seats 435 Total need to pick up 25 218 Needed for Majority 7 Vacancies 51 Republicans currently hold seats U.S. Senate can’t lose any seats 47 Democrats currently hold seats 100 Total 51 Needed for need to pick up 4 Majority 2 Independents Take note: 60 votes needed to invoke cloture, ending debate on legislation for final vote. 66 Republicans currently hold seats Ohio House of can’t lose more than 15 Balance of Power Representatives Republicans + Democrats are trying to pick 32 Democrats currently hold seats up as many seats as possible to tip the 99 Total need to pick up 18 balance of power at the national and state 51 Needed for level. • Statehouse Report
March 31, 2017 Big step forward for permissive county authority to levy additional $5 motor vehicle license fee Thank you to CCAO members & partners for your awesome advocacy efforts! Thanks to the General Assembly approving the Transportation Budget Conference Committee Report, counties are a BIG step closer to being able to levy an additional $5 motor vehicle license fee to fund local road and bridge infrastructure. The Conference Committee, tasked with ironing out the differences between the Ohio House and Senate, on Monday picked the House-passed provision that gave a board of county commissioners or county council the permissive authority to pass a resolution enacting the fee, though subject to voter referendum. County commissioners, county executives and county council members along with their staff and CCAO’s policy team worked with a coalition of advocates, including the County Engineers Association of Ohio (CEAO), regional planning agencies and several business organizations, to support the proposed additional $5 motor vehicle license tag fee, which hasn’t been adjusted since 1987. Thank you to CCAO’s members and our partners for your advocacy efforts that made an enormous difference! Several elected officials along with county staff provided testimony and attended statehouse hearings. Moreover, many contacted lawmakers expressing support for a board of commissioners and council members to exercise funding decisions, subject to referendum, that reflect the needs of their counties. The measure is before the Governor for his consideration and is expected to take action on the bill soon. Details on other provisions in the bill and the Governor’s action will be reported in next week’s CCAO Statehouse Report.

There are numerous regulations with which zoos must comply; however, more importantly, rigorous industry accreditation standards have been birthed, driving many zoos in a “race to the top” for excellence in animal care. Our country’s first approach to regulating zoos focused on the control of disease. From the late 1800s to the early 1900s, the Animal Quarantine Laws1 and the Lacey Act2 empowered the president and the Department of the Interior, respectively, to regulate the importation of animals that would threaten domestic animals or humans from disease or other harmful effects. My name is Critty Buenconsejo, and I am the President & CEO of Creative Housing Inc. Creative Housing is a non‐profit entity in Columbus, Ohio that has been providing safe and affordable community‐based homes to people with disabilities throughout Franklin County since 1991. In contrast to institutional settings, these neighborhood homes support independent living closer to families, jobs and networks of acquaintances. Creative Housing homes are renovated for the accessibility needs of residents, ensuring their home environment is safe and best suits their individual needs. In addition to owning homes dedicated to providing community settings for people with disabilities, Creative Housing provides subsidies to qualified persons with disabilities to live affordably in the private rental market. As General Motors attempts to bust up the picket line by taking away the health insurance for 50,000 families, we as members of the Ohio Democratic Women’s Caucus are writing you all today to reaffirm our support for your strike. Unions are the backbone of labor in this country and we proudly stand behind the UAW and their efforts to ensure the fair treatment of employees across the country.
