Reiserute

Day 1: Arrival, Cagliari Airport Day 2: Alghero to Tresnurgahes Day 3: to Santu Lussurgiu Day 4: Santu Lussurgiu to Torre dei Corsari Day 5: Torre dei Corsari to Portixeddu Day 6: Portixeddu to Calasetta Day 7: Calasetta to Costa del Sud Day 8: Departure, Cagliari Airport The island has a stunning coastline which we will explore throughout this cycling tour. Starting in the north of the island, our journey takes us along the high rising coastal cliffs on the way to and through the lush cork oak forested Mt Ferru mountains. Moving south we head into the low marsh lands of Cabras and Sinis Peninsula, crossing the plain and onto the mountainous Green Coast. After visiting the San Pietro and Sant 'Antioco islands our trip ends in the quaint fishermen's village of Pula, not before having cycled along the stunning south coast.

The route follows the beautiful coastline of sandy beaches, emerald green waters and jaw dropping ocean views taking us all the way to the southern point of the island. Sardinia is steeped in history and our route offers the potential to stop and visit ancient sites, Roman baths, Carthaginian settlements and rural churches.

We stay in a wide variety of dwellings during the holiday, ranging from independently run small hotels to family managed agriturismi and the accommodation is of a consistently high standard throughout.

Choose from one of our scheduled dates and join a guided tour, or, if you enjoy the freedom and flexibility of going it alone opt for the self-guided version.

If you have a day or two to spare why not extend your trip with some trekking or sea kayaking. Our local team can join you for a day’s guiding or we can provide the information and equipment to allow you to enjoy the routes self-guided, just give us a call for further info.

Day 1: Arrival, Cagliari Airport (D) Following your arrival at Cagliari Airport we make the 3 hour transfer up to Alghero where we can prepare our bikes and relax a little before dinner. Due to its strategic position in the Mediterranean Sea, Alghero was built around a fortified port and its small winding streets make a great place to explore.

Day 2: Alghero to Tresnurgahes (B, L) After breakfast we head out to start our fantastic journey, taking us from the north west cape of the Coral Coast all the way to the south west coast of the island. Leaving our accommodation, a small de-tour takes us along the medieval fortifications of Alghero and through its small winding streets that make this Catalan influenced town so special.

Our route from Alghero to Bosa, will follow the Mediterranean sea, a roller coaster with high cliffs ascending from the coast, interspersed with little rocky bays and ancient watch towers. Rare birds, including griffon vultures can often be spotted perched high up on the rocky cliffs.

Our arrival in Bosa along the River Temo is spectacular; traditional fishing boats moored along the riverbank, ancient tanneries reflecting in the water, the colourful pastel colours of Bosa ahead reaching up towards the Malaspina Castle.

Re-fuelled we head off on the last stretch for today, following the road down the river to Bosa Marina and taking the gradual climb up towards Magomandas. Our destination for today is Tresnuraghes, a small quiet village on the high plateau. With spa and swimming pool facilities, there is time to relax before we head out for dinner.

Approx. distance: 40 Miles / 65 Kms

Day 3: Tresnuraghes to Santu Lussurgiu (B, L, D) Leaving Tresnuraghes, we head inland along the plateau towards the tiny village of , beautifully decorated with colourful murals that depict rural life and Sardinian traditional culture. Continuing our journey south, the road undulates past stone walled farm holdings, sheep grazing fields and olive groves and we ride close to the Monte Ferru range which towers ahead of us. Reaching , it is time for a coffee break and time and, energy permitting, a short visit of the Basilica, leaving the bikes and walking up the narrow cobbled roads to the view point above the town.

Our destination for today is the charming village of Santu Lussurgiu, on the south-east side of the mountain range. We have two options, either the coastal southern route (70km) or a more direct route, winding through Mt Ferru, passing woods and barren rugged slopes. A delicious picnic lunch will break up the ride, ideally located either on the coast or in the shade of the woods near the natural water springs of San Leonardo. The options will be offered depending on the group, weather and riding abilities.

The town of Santu Lussugiu is quite unique in its location and narrow cobbled streets are a maze to be explored. Our accommodation is set in a centuries old mansion, and our host takes great care in offering a fine and special meal, in a context of a homely environment.

Approx. distance: 43 Miles / 70 Kms

Day 4: Santu Lussurgiu to Torre dei Corsari (B, L) After a delicious and plentiful breakfast, we leave the cobbled streets of Santu Lussurgiu on a lovely gradual descent towards the coast and the low wet-lands of Cabras, a natural habitat for birds and famous for its mullet fishing. On a short detour we ride to the Sinis Peninsula famous for the Roman-Punic remains of Tharros and some of the earliest paleo-christian remains. The peninsula was a strategic location for the Romans for both exploration of the Mediterranean but also access to the interior of Sardinia in search of minerals and land to exploit. San Salvatore and San Giovanni di Sinis are paleo-Christian churches built not far from Tharros, their simplicity in design and architecture a reflections of basic times.

Moving on, we ride through the flat agricultural region of Arborea, where most of Sardinia’s milk and vegetables are farmed. Arborea town, built during the Mussolini era is a sharp contrast to Sardinian traditional towns. Reaching Marceddi on the southern side of the fertile plains, the little fishing hamlet is where we stop off for one of our special skedaddle picnic lunches and a short break, before crossing the Marceddi lagoon. Here if we are lucky, we might get to spot some flamingos. Back on the coast, we take the short rollercoaster-eseque ride to Torre dei Corsari, our hotel right on the coast and an ideal setting to chill out after another great ride.

Approx. distance: 65 Miles / 110 Kms

Day 5: Torre dei Corsari to Portixeddu (B, L, D) Our coastal exploring now takes us into the Costa Verde region, riding through lush green Mediterranean macchia and with open views of the sea. We stop at Portu Maga to take a coffee break with views opening up to a rugged coastline and long stretches of sandy beaches. From here we head inland, riding below the Monte Arcuentu volcanic range and into the mining area of Montevecchio. If lucky enough we might spot a Sardinian deer or two. A gradual climb will then lead us to Arbus and on to our final 9km descent to Fluminimaggiore and the long sandy beach of Portixeddu. Here there is time for a dip in the sea and a drink at the local bar before heading back for another mouthwatering dinner at our hotel, a short pedal away from the coast.

Approx. distance: 40 Miles / 65 Kms

Day 6: Portixeddu to Calasetta (B) Continuing along the coast we enjoy stunning views of long sandy beaches and rugged promontories. Next we take a ferry* across to St Peter Island, and the unique small town of Carloforte with its own character flowing from its Genoese and Tunisian influences. Time now to sample some of the finest fish cuisine in the Mediterranean. Another ferry will take us across to the island of St Antioco, known for its ancient settlements and catacombs under the town. A final ride through cultivated fields will lead us to our next hotel. *Approx 12 Euros per person including bike for both ferries.

Approx. distance: 40 Miles / 65 Kms

Day 7: Calasetta to Costa del Sud (B, L) Alas we’ve reached the final ride of our tour. There is no reason to be sad however because we have a beautiful day ahead as our route takes us to one of the finest stretches of beach on the island. With the expanse of blue Mediterranean water permanently at our side, the traffic free roads leads us past many beautiful coves and rugged rock formations until we reach Pula, our final destination, where we will celebrate our achievement.

Approx. distance: 62 Miles / 100 Kms

Day 8: Departure, Cagliari Airport (B) After breakfast we will transfer you to Cagliari Elmas Airport (CAG) for your return flight. If you have opted to fly back from Alghero we will transfer you to the bus station to meet your transfer up to the north of the island.

If you have a day or two to spare why not extend your trip with some trekking or sea kayaking exploring the picturesque coastline and sandy shores which stretch along the coast from Pula. Our local team can join you for a day’s guiding or we can provide the information and equipment to allow you to enjoy the routes self-guided, just give us a call for further info.
