70/30 cupronickel www.columbiametals.com CN107 / C71500 / CW354H / DEF STAN 02-780 [email protected] 70/30 is a copper nickel alloy noted for its excellent resistance to corrosion, erosion and pitting combined with a good strength, workability and weldability. It has enjoyed a long and successful history in the marine sector that has since extended to industries including offshore oil and gas, power generation, desalination and cooling plants. 70/30 cupronickel The most popular specifications covering this alloy are the CN107 and C71500 designations, although the Naval Engineering specifications DEF STAN 02-780 or NES 780 offer tighter controls on impurities and mechanical properties together with a mandatory impact value. 70/30 is best renowned for its excellent corrosion and erosion resistance, especially in marine environments. Its corrosion resistance is improved in higher velocity waters (up to 4.5m/s) and polluted seawater. It is also highly resistant to stress corrosion cracking and corrosion fatigue and has a high retention of mechanical properties from sub-zero temperatures to ~300oC. In the annealed condition, 70/30 offers moderate strength levels which enable it to be used in more demanding applications. In addition, it displays inherent resistance to biofouling. A protective oxide film forms naturally over the material during the initial period of use, creating an inhospitable surface that deters marine growth. 70/30 responds well to most fabrication processes and is readily hot and cold worked. It is also easily joined by soldering, brazing and a variety of welding methods. With good hot and cold formability and a malleability approaching that of copper, 70/30 does not harden rapidly, lending the material to drawing and spinning. -

Phillips, M.S.W.E ***** The Ohio State University 2008 Dissertation Committee: Professor Charley Albright, Advisor Approved by Professor Dave Dickinson _________________________________ Professor John Lippold Advisor Welding Engineering Graduate Program ABSTRACT Magnetically Impelled Arc Butt (MIAB) welding is a forge welding technique which generates uniform heating at the joint through rapid rotation of an arc. This rotation results from forces imposed on the arc by an external magnetic field. MIAB welding is used extensively in Europe, but seldom utilized in the United States. The MIAB equipment is robust and relatively simple in design, and requires low upset pressures compared to processes like Friction welding. In the automotive industry, tubular construction offers many advantages due to the rigidity, light weight, and materials savings that tubes provide. In the case of automotive suspension components, tubes may be chromium-plated on the ID to reduce the erosive effects of a special damping fluid. Welding these tubes using the MIAB welding process offers unique technical challenges, but with potential for significant cost reduction vs. other welding options such as Friction welding. Based on published literature, this research project represented the first attempt to MIAB weld chromium-plated steel tubes, and to utilize voltage monitoring techniques to assess weld quality. ii Optical and SEM microscopy, tensile testing, and an ID bend test technique were all used to assess the integrity of the MIAB weldments. -

Susan Tai”, University Ave., Cumaná, Sucre 6101, Venezuela. Abstract In this study, a statistical evaluation was made of the susceptibility to pitting corrosion, using the pitting factor criteria. Specimens were cut in size of 15 cm x10 cm of AA3003 aluminium sheet of temper H14, H16 and H18 of national production. Afterwards, they were exposed to a salt spray during 72, 144, 216, 288 and 360 hours continually, according to ASTM B117 standard. After salt spray test was observed pitting attack in all specimens regardless of the exposure time and the degree of deformation (temper) of material. The surfaces of the corroded specimens were analyzed by optical interferometry. The parameters evaluated in each field were: roughness (Rms), peak-valley distance (PV) and the lowest point of all peaks (V). A pitting factor of the order of 4 was calculated, indicating a highly localized corrosion process for this commercial aluminium alloy 3003 in saline environment. © 20152014 TheThe Authors. Authors. Pure aluminium has about one‐third the density and stiffness of steel. The yield strength of pure aluminium is 7–11 MPa, while aluminium alloys have yield strengths ranging from 200 MPa to 600 MPa. Yield strength of mild steel is 250 Mpa while that of high strength alloy steel is 690 Mpa A yield strength or yield point of a material is defined as the stress at which a material begins to deform plastically. Prior to the yield point the material will deform elastically and will return to its original shape when the applied stress is removed. ( Mpa = megapascal = 145psi) Three main reasons why aluminium alloys are used instead of pure aluminium •Increased strength to weight ratio over pure aluminium. -
