Holy Martyrs Namesakes’ 40th Anniversary

Today’s article is on the namesakes of our Parish, Holy Martyrs, the four American churchwomen and St. Oscar Romero. It is an especially fitting topic, as Wednesday, December 2, marks the 40th anniversary of the martyrdom of the four churchwomen during the .

El Salvador in 1980 was a very dangerous place. The civil war had broken out a year earlier between the military-led government of and the FMLN (Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front), a coalition of a number of left-wing groups. One of the main tactics of the government forces was the deliberate terrorization and targeting of civilians by “death squads” during the conflict, including Catholic clergy, who were viewed as anti-government due to their position on human rights. The Carter, Reagan, and Bush administrations provided financial support (of between 1-2 million dollars a day) and training to the military government of El Salvador under the Cold War context of fighting Communism.

Then Archbishop Oscar Romero (now St. Oscar Romero) was growing increasingly vocal about human rights violations by the government as the conflict progressed. In February 1980, he appealed to then President Jimmy Carter to stop the US support of the military as it would only increase the repression and injustice against the people in El Salvador as they struggled to obtain fundamental human rights. On March 24, 1980, Romero was assassinated by the military while saying Mass, one day after giving a speech imploring government troops to disobey orders to kill Salvadoran civilians. At his funeral a week later, government snipers opened fire and set off explosives on a crowd of 100,000 mourners outside the Cathedral, killing 40.

Increasing violence and danger in the country resulted in the recall of foreign clergy and lay persons from El Salvador. However, due to their love of the people, many chose to stay in spite of personal risk. Among these were the four American churchwomen, Sr. and , both from Cleveland, and Sisters Ita Ford and . On December 2, 1980, the women disappeared after a trip to the airport (to pick up the Maryknoll sisters who were returning to the country). Their bodies were discovered the next day by local peasants and unearthed in the presence of Fr. Paul Schindler and other members of the mission team, US Ambassador Robert White, and 15 members of the media. Sr. Dorothy Kazel and Jean Donovan were returned to the United States for burial; the Maryknoll sisters were buried in El Salvador, in keeping with Maryknoll custom. Public outcry from these forced the US government to pressure the Salvadoran government for an investigation into the murders, and aid was withheld for a time. In 1984, four National Guardsmen and their superior were convicted of the murders.

Today at Holy Martyrs, our chapel is named for St. Oscar Romero and there are four meeting rooms on the mezzanine level of the church named after the churchwomen.

Stephen Ministry

If I am interested in becoming a Stephen Minister or I have questions about Stephen Ministry, what do I do?

If you have a calling to provide care and support to hurting people, becoming a Stephen Minister is one way to live out that calling. It is an opportunity to serve God, help others, and grow in faith – a life-transforming experience.

The first step is to prayerfully consider becoming a part of this crucial, caring ministry. Seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance to help you discern how God might be calling you to ministry.

Then, as an important part of your discernment, contact Janet Payton via the church office or talk with one of our Holy Martyrs Stephen Leaders:

Skip McQuate Betsy Wehe Denny Marco Michelle Schaefer

They can give you more information, answer questions, and talk to you about the application, interview, and training process.
