As Jurgen Habermas asserts, utopian thought plays a vital role in the positive development of society. Habermas also observes that utopian energies are failing in modern society and that this limits our ability to achieve an affirmative community. I agree with Habermas's assessment and therefore here I examine literary representations of utopia with the hope that utopian energies can be revived. As I argue here, literary utopias can inspire and guide us towards positive societal change. In chapter one, I examine the utopias of the early modern period, focusing specifically on Thomas More's Utopia. Here I reveal that More's special insight is the concept of artificial scarcity which he believes forces men to accept inequitable social structures. These structures, in turn, prevent humanity from reaching its full potential. Therefore, better institutions will improve humanity. In the following chapter, I investigate Karl Marx's Manifesto of the Communist Party as well as his earlier philosophies as they appear in The Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts of 1844 and the German Ideology. Here I look at the way Marx's theory that humanity's consciousness is determined by his material existence affects his vision of utopia. From this we learn that humanity cannot be separated from social institutions. Finally, in chapter three, I explore the arguably iii dystopian Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. Here I claim that the novel is in fact, in Rand's conception, a capitalist utopia. In the world of this novel, the individual is valued above all else which leads to the destruction of community. Rand, however, argues that the partial destruction of society is necessary in order for the elite to form a true collectivity. Although I cover a wide range of texts covered in this study, through it we see that the search for utopia is actually a search for true collectivity. I argue that although past attempts to reach this collectivity have failed, Habermas's theory of communicative action is inclusive enough to account for the diversity of modernity. iv Table of Contents Introduction 1 Chapter One: The Utopian Visions of the Early Modern Period 15 Chapter Two: The Move Toward Secularism in Utopian Thought 39 Chapter Three: Moving from "We" to "I" and Losing Utopia? 57 Conclusion: The Importance of Utopian Thought 77 List of References 83 Vita 89 V Introduction The present state of the communitarian-liberal debate In a town meeting in Chester, Pennsylvania, Senator Rick Santorum presented President Bush's plan to overhaul Social Security, focusing heavily on the benefits of private accounts (Toner). Although Mr. Santorum held the meeting to talk to younger generations about the proposed change, his audience ranged from college students to retirees (Toner). While Mr. Santorum's speech was focused on the benefits of privatization, the New York Times reported a mixed reaction from the audience. Many of the older members of the community attended the meeting to protest the proposed changes, and Mr. Santorum did little to change their minds. Martin Berger, president of a retirees union, voiced one of the group's dominant concerns: "We built the system. We believe that it should be available for our children and grandchildren" (Toner). However, a few of the younger members of the audience disagreed with this intergenerational, family and community focused perspective and voiced support for the plan of privatization. Student Katherine Dombrowski strongly supported the idea of privatization and described resistance to the privatization as a refusal to accept self-responsibility. "I don't understand what everybody has against the idea of taking care of yourselves, " she said (Toner). Although this debate centered on the issue of Social Security, the comments of these two audience members are part of a much 1 broader socio-political debate between the two dominant currents of American social theory: communitarianism and liberalism (Delanty 43). Communitarianism argues that humans are social by nature and emphasizes that the good of the community is in the best interests of the individual. Berger, with his focus on the necessity of the community in the life of the individual, is representative of the communitarian perspective. Conversely, liberalism prizes the rights of the individual and therefore asserts that social institutions should not interfere with the freedom of the individual. The liberal perspective is represented by Dombrowski because she believes that the individual should be free from any community or government­ imposed restraints. In my discussion of the Social Security debate, I presented Berger and Dombrowski as clear-cut examples of a communitarian and a liberal. These two perspectives can be seen as endpoints on a continuum. On the far left, the communitarians argue that the individual can only reach self-actualization as a member of a community; therefore, the rights of the individual should always be subordinate to the good of the community. On the far right, the neo-liberals argue that the individual should be free from any restraints, community-based or otherwise. Again, in both cases, the most extreme proponents believe that a full implementation of their ideals will lead to the best possible version of Social Security, specifically, and society in general. 2 Most people, however, are not extremists or utopians but espouse a hybrid of the two perspectives or fall somewhere closer to the middle of the spectrum. Indeed, the conununitarian and liberal discourses mix promiscuously in current thought, as well as in past debates, and the difference between those on the right and those on the left is often a mere matter of degrees. In this shadowy debate, recognizing the emphasis of each rhetoric is imperative because the conununitarian and liberal perspectives lead us in radically different political directions and to radically different versions of the ideal society. A persistent tension exists between these two perspectives, and much of utopian literature seeks to resolve this tension. Although utopian texts may favor either liberalism or conununitarianism, all utopian texts, by definition, seek to find the ideal balance between the interests of the individual and the interests of the conununity. The most optimistic of these texts assert that these interests are in perfect harmony with each other. In order to understand the positions within the current utopian debate, I will examine the literary history of utopianism within the context of the evolution of social theory. In "The Crisis of the Welfare State and the Exhaustion of Utopian Energies, " Jurgen Habermas claims humanity is losing its willingness and ability to imagine utopia. At present, many consider the discourse of utopia to be irrelevant because of its 3 idealism; however, I expound upon Habermas's argument that the discourse of utopia is relevant because of that very idealism. I believe that the hopefulness expressed in utopian literature can serve as a guide and a motivator for positive change. More specifically, in this project, I assert that narratives of community and utopia, though no longer ascendant, can still guide humanity in its search for

There is a sense in which the clash between these two groups is the essential conflict in the novel: They represent two fundamentally opposing approaches to life. However, the plot structure of Atlas Shrugged is designed to turn most crucially on another conflict: the conflict within souls of the creators, who are faced with the dilemma of deciding how to act in a world heavily populated by looters. Toohey has dedicated himself to the destruction of independence, individualism, and integrity by asserting control over others who are spiritually weak. Toohey preaches an abhorrent collectivist doctrine to the masses, disguised as moral virtue; he encourages altruism, self-sacrifice, and the renunciation of one’s ego for the greater good; he releases didactic novels and carefully crafted articles that conceal mendacious propaganda.

Younkins Aldershot, England: Ashgate, 2007 428 pp., index As Jerome Tuccille’s book title famously observed, a young person’s introduction to the world of libertarian thought often begins with the work of Ayn Rand. Her masterpiece, Atlas Shrugged, gives the reader an emotionally compelling but rational framework for understanding the world and assures the frustrated adolescent that he, the non-conforming much-resented achiever destined for greatness, is not alone in the world. That wasn’t the case with me, though. I discovered radical individualism through Harry Browne’s rather more laid-back book, How I Found Freedom in an Unfree World, and learned more about the freedom philosophy and free-market economics through Leonard Read and The Freeman magazine. I got around to Rand soon enough, and found The Virtue of Selfishness and some of Rand’s other non- fiction useful, but I soon moved on to other thinkers, especially Ludwig von Mises and Murray Rothbard. When I finally read Atlas Shrugged years later, I did so out of a sense of obligation. Because I was already familiar with (and shared) most of its ideas, the book was not the revelation for me that it had been for so many others. As the years passed after I read Atlas, it diminished further in my mind, and I found myself agreeing with those who dismissed it (whether or not they had read it) as propaganda primarily suited for adolescents, with minimal literary merit.

    From the Instructor Nicholas wrote this paper for my WR 150 course that surveys debates surrounding the free market. The second major paper in the course challenges students to contend with two uncompromising visions of the market’s virtues and evils: Karl Marx’s narrative of exploitation and estranged labor in The Communist Manifesto vs. John Galt’s forceful speech at the end of Atlas Shrugged, through which Ayn Rand asserts that competition alone can engender individual autonomy and national pros- perity. As a writer, the young Marx exemplifies many of the lessons that I teach my students. He provides an insightful and consistent framework for analysis—class relations—but does so through an elegant story with clear protagonists, antagonists, and a compelling narrative of historical struggle. Rand consciously inverts aspects of Marx’s narrative, contrasting “men of ability,” personified by Galt himself, with the weaker strata of society who seek shelter from the vicissitudes of struggle. Nicholas demonstrates in this paper his capacity to grasp the core points of contention between Rand and Marx, but also to elucidate the relevance of their grand visions for contemporary political debates in clear, insightful, and often clever prose. Nicholas frequently settled on a theme and argument from the first draft of his papers, and spent subsequent drafts developing those ideas further. He made good use of scholarly sources to substantiate his argument in this paper, especially when demon- strating that Rand, far from being a marginal twentieth-century thinker, has attained a mythical status for the contemporary American Right that is nearly on a par with the cult of Marxism in the scholarly and political movements of the past century.

    Capitalism and Morality _________________________ ATLAS SHRUGGED’S DAGNY TAGGART AND HANK REARDEN: TWO OF A KIND Catherine Gallagher Catherine is a student in Wheeling Jesuit University’s MBA program. “I swear by my life and my love of it that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine.” Ayn Rand’s novel, Atlas Shrugged, depicts a once capitalistic society torn apart by looters. A society which punished hard working producers for their success, then forced them to carry the weight if the world on there shoulders. Yet at some point this weight became to much to bear, and the producers of the world decided to retaliate, leaving only a few behind working for a lost cause. Dagny Taggart and Hank Rearden where two of the few left behind, driven only by there love of work. The protagonist of the novel, Dagny Taggart, is an intelligent, resourceful, and committed producer. She is the Vice President of Operations at Taggart Transcontinental, driven by her love for the railroad. Dagny supports and understands the necessity of competition, knowing that it leads to the best possible product at the lowest possible cost. Yet she still works and lives among the looters, who do all that is possible to stop competition and repress those who are successful. Dagny’s very own brother, James Taggart, is one of the looters, driven by greed and corruption. Dagny is superior to her brother in all matters of business, yet ironically James was the one named President of Taggart Transcontinental.

Foreword by Art Lindsley, Ph.D. Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand has been ranked as second only to the Bible as one of the most influential books in the lives of modern readers, and more than 30 million copies of her books have been sold. Nearly a million dollars in cash prizes have been awarded in essay contests encouraging high school and college students to read Rand’s novels, and increasingly universities are making her books required reading. Aside from Rand’s success, why would the Institute for Faith, Work & Economics (IFWE) show interest in reviewing the thoughts behind her works, given that she was a virulent atheist, despised Christianity along with the Bible, condemned any form of altruism, exalted selfishness, and used the dollar bill as her symbol? First, even if you have no intention of reading Rand – and her works are certainly not for everyone – it is at least worth knowing what she believed and how her beliefs compare and contrast with the Bible. Second, any work that appeals to so many people likely contains some truths worth investigating. For example, I have learned specific truths through reading atheist, New Age, and neo-pagan works, even though I reject their overarching worldview. We at IFWE believe in common grace, which means that every favor of whatever kind that this undeserving world enjoys originates from the hand of God. While it is true that unbelievers eventually twist truth, they nonetheless have some truth to twist. In other words, non-believers have both honey – created truth – and hemlock – truth twisted by the Fall.
