Donald Robinson and the Imperfect Unity of an Australian Prayer Book (1978)1

JUDD: The Imperfect Unity of AAPB 4 Donald Robinson and the Imperfect Unity of An Australian Prayer Book (1978)1 Andrew Judd An Australian Prayer Book (AAPB) ‘is Donald Robinson’s book par excellance. And he shares that proprietorship with Gilbert Sinden of Adelaide’.2 This, the opinion of fellow commissioner Edwin Judge, is only barely an overstatement. Robinson was one of only three men to see the commission through from 1962 to 1978, and its minutes reveal he was extremely active in its meetings.3 Together with Evan Burge and Gilbert Sinden, much of the drafting of the final prayer book is indeed Robinson’s work.4 Yet it was not through quantity of work that Robinson left his imprint on AAPB. Rather, it was through two of Robinson’s defining personal characteristics. First, his idiosyncratic scholarship, his logical approach to words, and his grasp of liturgical history propelled the commission down an inevitably evangelical course. Second, his intellectual generosity and principled churchmanship nurtured a spirit of trust and cooperation. This often enabled true agreement, and not just compromise, to be reached with those who did not share his evangelical convictions. AAPB is, because of Robinson, an imperfect unity, but one truly attempted. It is the closest Australian Anglicans would ever come to finding ‘a common ground behind divergences of tradition’.5 1 My sincere thanks to Professor Edwin Judge, Rt Rev Donald Robinson, Marie Robinson, Dr Louise Trott, Kim Robinson, Rev Peter Robinson, Associate Professor Stuart Piggin, Dr Stephen Judd, Rev Dr Bill Lawton, Professor Barry Spurr, Rev Dr John Bunyan and Rev Dr Colin Bale.

Proceedings of the 1998 Ordinary Session of the 44th Synod Third Ordinary Session of the 44th Synod of the Diocese of Sydney: October and December 1998 Summary of Proceedings The Synod Service of Holy Communion was held in the Cathedral Church of St Andrew, Sydney, at 1.15 pm on Monday 12 October 1998. The Preacher was Bishop Ray Smith, the Bishop of Liverpool. Following the Cathedral Service, the 3rd ordinary session of the 44th Synod assembled in the Wesley Theatre at 3.15 pm under the Presidency of the Most Reverend R.H. Goodhew, Bishop of the Diocese of Sydney and Archbishop of the Province of New South Wales. The Synod had afternoon and evening sittings on 12, 13, 14, 19 and 20 October 1998 and on 15 December 1998. Presidential Address By the Most Reverend R.H. Goodhew, Archbishop of Sydney Monday 12 October 1998. Welcome to this third and final session of 44th Synod of the Diocese of Sydney. It has signs of being a very busy session. You will have observed the unusually large number of Motions by Request of Synod or Standing Committee. For this reason, though there are a number of issues that I wish to canvass with you, I have decided to deal with them over the course of a couple of Synod sessions. The 1998 Lambeth Conference First, to say something about the 1998 Lambeth Conference. Four of my Episcopal colleagues and I come to this Synod with the experience of Lambeth still fresh in our minds. I have already spoken on a few occasions about the Conference and its significance.

Marie Elizabeth Robinson (Nee Taubman) (1925–2014): Extraordinary in the Ordinary

Marie Elizabeth Robinson (nee Taubman) (1925–2014): Extraordinary in the Ordinary Stephanie Judd 1 Many thanks to the Robinson family, the Judd family, Anita Barnett, Anne South, Margo Watson, Jan Livingston, Bishop Donald Cameron, Laura Rademaker, and to Kaitlyn MacDonnell for transcribing Marie’s many handwritten sermons. 2 To many, Marie Elizabeth Robinson (1925–2014), lived her life as a mother and wife in the shadow of her husband Donald William Bradley Robinson (born 1922). Donald’s various offices, including Vice-Principal of Moore Theological College (1952–1972), Bishop of Parramatta (1973–1982), and Archbishop of the Sydney Anglican Diocese (1982–1993), allowed him extraordinary formal ecclesial influence in Sydney and Australia, and significant influence in seminaries and churches worldwide through his academic contributions to the field of theology, in particular, the doctrine of the church. For Anita Barnett, however, Marie ‘carved out for herself a role of far greater influence than Don had’.1 It is beyond the scope of this essay to assess this claim, and indeed to do so might be impossible as Donald and Marie served God in such different ways. Yet what can be said is that in those ‘ordinary’ arenas in which Marie focused her energies, leadership abilities, and her first-class mind—namely, in raising her children, supporting her husband, teaching God’s Word, and the edification of other Christians—an extraordinary influence was had. Marie Elizabeth Robinson was born on June 10, 1925. Her mother was Mary Taubman; her siblings
