MAITLAND ELDERCARE VILLAGE DON’T RAIN ON MY PARADE– sung by Barbara Streisand in “ Funny Girl” Perhaps we should have played that as ten vehicles assembled at the Maitland Eldercare Village on Tuesday, 24th October. We were welcome by residents and staff as we parked, but the heavy rain meant that only a brief look at the cars was possible. However, we were soon settled inside and that provided and opportunity for the MAPS members to say a little about their respective vehicles. As a result, we heard some previously undisclosed background on several cars. Until a few years ago, visits by MAPS members to The Village were a regular event on the MAPS calendar and we used to take the more mobile residents for runs around the neighbourhood However, such easy going times are no longer with us. It was good to be able to have our photograph taken with one of the Club’s original founders from 1985, Mrs. Lois Briggs, now a Village resident.. I was also pleased to speak with another resident who formerly lived in Ardrossan, Mrs. Yvonne Coleman and she was keen to pass on her recollections on the Holden 48/215 bought by her father back in 1948, car number 6 off the line, as he was a long term employee and inspector.. AUTO COLLECTORS’ CLUB OF MURRAY BRIDGE,TWO BRIDGES RALLY, OCTOBER 20TH -22ND 2017 Three couples from MAPS attended the 7th ACCMB rally– the Osbornes– Bristol 409, Graham and Margaret Klingberg– Mazda, Ashley Farrow and Margaret Edwards Modern with a total of about 100 entrants and a very wide selection of vehicles. We were again fortunate to be accommodated at the home of Dennis and Yvonne Kuchel, ACCMB members. ACCMB’s set up is very good—joint use of a community centre, allowing catering on site and club displays. For dog owners there is a secure dog off lead area close by, complete with agility equipment for the more active pooches. The program included the Friday evening get together meal, a Saturday meet up flagged off by the Mayor, morning tea at Tailem Bend Oval and lunch at the Cheese Factory Restaurant, Meningie. Next door is the local museum and members of the Coorong club came along to view the cars and judge the several categories which included one for the best costumes. To round off the day, we had an evening meal back at the club rooms. Sunday offered two options; a visit to the Murray Bridge Roundhouse, or the heritage areas of the railway . We chose the latter, with a very interesting commentary from our guide, Ken. If MAPS members go to Murray Bridge in Just four of the many class winners– 2018, it might be worth making a note of 1970 Ford Ute, these areas to visit 1947Alvis TA 14, To round off the rally, there was lunch, 1929 Studebaker President, the drawing of some very impressive 1960 Jaguar Mark 2 raffle prizes and the vehicle class awards. HOLDEN DREAM CRUISE DAY 2017 Up early this Sunday 15th October; couldn’t be late today, as we were lucky to be chosen to be in this historic 10 km car run, to say good-bye to Holden’s, at Elizabeth. Everyone had to be there by 8.30am. Many thanks to Holden’s and volunteers and everyone organising this event, which went to plan I’m sure. The Elizabeth plant closure ends nearly 60 years. of car production in the northern Suburbs. Over 1000 different Holden cars, including utes, station wagons, from 1932-2017 lined the car parks of Elizabeth shopping centre on Elizabeth Way including a 1932 Roadster built at the Woodville plant. Start time 9am, Holden Collection started the run, with Bev Brock waving the flag to wave them off, each section followed, also each section has a different colour banner on their windscreen to help all of the marshals, by 9.20am it was our turn, all other drivers lined the Elizabeth Way to wave all the old cars off. As we started our run people lined the streets, balloons and flags flying, when we approached Holden’s on Phillip highway, more people, even motorbikes ( club) were there to wish us on. Every one waving, though it was sad time, it was a great moment, to be a part of this historic Dream Cruise. Our two grandchildren Trinity 13 and Kaydan 11 came with us for the run, and will remember this day. On our final approach at Elizabeth Oval, just more people, we parked our car at the school and went to The Money Oval (Elizabeth Football Oval) where Holden’s put on a family free day concert, with local artists and celebrity Samantha Jade who sang for a one hour concert. Just a fantastic day; even the weather was great, especially for these old cars. We stayed for the concert, but not for the Auction for the last 3 Holden cars made, time for photos and good byes, then we made our way back home to Kadina. 14 VINTAGE AND CLASSIC CARAVANERS OF SA NEWS This informal group came together over 5 years ago and came about as a result of owners of “vintage” or “classic” caravans meeting up at a number of SA venues such as Tanunda, Nuriootpa and Meningie. More venues have been added along the way.. Vintage vans– up to 1970 and classic caravans to 1980 have increased in popularity for various reasons. Cost are relatively low and they provide something for the ladies to provide their input.. Whilst some tow with a car of a similar age to their caravan, that’s not obligatory and we have used both modern and older cars to get to the meet ups. We have just come back from a most enjoyable long weekend at Lake Albert Caravan Park, Meningie, a splendid venue whatever caravan or cabin you select. About 50 caravans of all ages, sizes and condition on show. MAPS members Kevin and Leonie Kavanagh, Bob and Ellen Haywood joined us. We were joined by some visitors from the Coorong club who brought along their many varied vehicles. I met up with Arnold Millett, a Meningie resident with a variety of cars, but I was rather taken by the Austin 1800 ute. pictured above Another vehicle of interest was the SIMCA estate brought along by Robert and Ina Stapley of the NARC Kapunda Chapter. Their accommodation was a tear drop caravan and annex. With a rough night and a lakeside site, their camping nerve must have been tested.. Mike O 15

MAPS run to Marion Bay Report by Carol Wilkin

‘The wind like a rushing river was lashing the crops and trees. The sun was a golden dollar raised above burnished seas. The road was a ribbon of parchment snaked over ripening moors And the classics all came cruising, cruising The classics all came cruising through the dust to the Tavern door.’

With apologies to ‘The Highwayman’ by Alfred Noyes.

Sunday, October 29th and the weather tried its best to quash the spirits of the MAPS club and the Vintage, Veteran and Classic Motorcycle Club as we set out for a leisurely cruise to the Marion Bay Tavern for lunch.

The gathering began at the Yorketown Clubroom of the Motorcycle Club where we were welcomed by hot coffee and delicious homemade biscuits provided by their members. It was just what was needed as the wind outside blew relentlessly. In spite of this, the eclectic variety of vehicles filling the carpark had everyone milling around, chatting and admiring. The arrival of the restored Edithburgh Fire Truck driven by Drew Searle with Bronnie Searle bravely riding shotgun and son, Lucas casting caution to the wind, (literally), riding unprotected on the back, was a highlight.

Living in a small country town and having a classic car interest, you might regret not being able to join large city cruises where dozens if not hundreds of cars could take part. Sunday’s cruise proved a panacea with an estimated thirty vehicles at Yorketown. Moving off, the cruise headed across the Peasey towards Warooka at stately pace. Amongst the more ‘modern’ vehicles were a couple of oldies such as Richard Germein’s ‘27 Chev with passenger Minnie Cooper, the dog. Richard also had his LH Torana on the cruise. Complementing the glorious fire truck were two spectacular F Trucks, also painted red with beautiful detailing and decals.

On arrival at Warooka town square, we were joined by another thirty or so vehicles and bikes. Once more, everyone had a quick look around and then off towards Stenhouse Bay and finally Marion Bay Tavern. Though the wind continued to bluster, the sun was bright, flashing spears of light off highly polished chrome and glinting paint as we wended our way south.

MAPS run to Marion Bay, an assortment of pictures of vehicles 17

Cars, motor cycles and trucks filled every available parking space around the Tavern, a gourmet experience for car and bike lovers before even entering the eatery! Some of the interesting rides included a brilliant yellow Mazda RX4 two door coupe with matching yellow Globe mags. Also spotted Gog and Sue Taylor’s Maroon Daimler and Shawn and Tracey Slater’s recently restored but family owned white XY V8 Falcon sporting 5 slots with red walls. Perfect! Grant Jarrett risked some sand blasting in the wind and brought his totally restored ‘66 Stang for a roll. A collection of now very desirable ranked together: Shane Bishop’s metallic blue HR panel van, Darren Hart’s yellow HZ Sandman, Anthony Hart’s HJ station wagon and HX LE Monaro, dark red of course with gold honeycomb mags, driven by wife Rebecca. There was also a very nice MGB GT owned by Robert Gee, a Mini Cooper S, two lovely Valiants, Trevor Loechel ’s S series and an AP6 owned by Steve Silvestri. The apex predators on opposing sides of the now defunct Big Two, the SS Commodore, owner Les Schwab and the FPV GT, owner Carol Wilkin, parked together. Great also to see John Buttfield’s XW GT Falcon parked next to son-in-law Craig Farrow’s ‘67 Mustang coupe. Inside and finally out of the wind, about 60 people crammed onto tables, leaving many to resort to the beer garden or to continue appraising the iron. The atmosphere was convivial as members of both clubs mixed and shared stories. The food was good served with little fuss by the staff considering the number to serve and the cramped conditions. Time to roll on and many decided to cruise via Corny Point along the Coastal Way. Ahh the rumble of the V8’s. Music to my ears. Enough said! Peter and Pam Wilton had been riding with Dickie and Jenny Penhall in their XR Falcon V8. Did they stop for fuel more than once? Was the suspension up to the job? Not according to Dickie! And what combination of tyres did he choose for the day, I wonder. Arriving at Corny, we took a short break for light refreshments at the Howling Dog and then proceeded on our own ways back home. Having been abandoned by the Penhalls, the Wiltons joined us in the GT and on arriving back in Yorketown to we decided hot donuts would be a good idea. They were delicious and a fitting end to a fantastic club event and a big day out.

Thanks to John Giles of the Motorcycle Club who contacted Richard Bastian of MAPS to bring the run together. Also thanks to Mike Osborne for getting the emails out promptly. C.W 18 Minutes of general meeting, Performing Arts Centre, Maitland 8pm, Thursday, November 2, 2017
