Fortnightly Newsletter Week 14, Friday 28th May 2021

Dear Parent/Carer

Today I write to you as the proud Principal of Kibworth Mead Academy, having successfully kept our school Covid-19 free since March 2021. This has been an extraordinary effort between staff, students, families and our community.

These efforts have ensured our students, your children, have remained in school, learning in their classrooms, having fun with their friends and growing into resilient, kind, intelligent young people, remembering intelligence develops in many forms.

If, during half term, your child tests positive for Covid-19, please remember to email [email protected]. Not only will we be able to offer support, it will also allow us to track and trace any close contacts. If you require any further details, please visit https://www.thekibworthschool.org/COVID/

This is a short reflection on the positive difference and support you have all shown since March 2021, when we returned, but also our first term as Kibworth Mead Academy:

• On 1st April 2021, we became part of the TMET Trust, part of this strong learning community. • Throughout, our students have worn facemasks sensibly to protect themselves, staff and others. Every morning, whilst standing at the gate, Mrs Watts has ensured that all students have a face mask, in rain, sleet, snow and sunshine! Thank you families, thank you Mrs Watts! • KMA are working very closely with TMET to further enhance and build upon our successful Teaching and Learning offer. We are undertaking shared school visits to Rushey Mead to share best practice, particularly with Science and Maths. We are excited about learning from each other. • Subject forums have been established across TMET and all of our Middle Leaders are actively enjoying participating in these. These have added so much value and support to date, particularly regarding our Year 11 Centre Assessed Grade processes. • Year 11s and staff were informed that exams would not be held this year, and Centre Assessed Grades were going to be awarded. Our leaders and staff worked hard to ensure our Policy has been approved by JCQ. • Our Year 7 students are definitely learning more and knowing more. I am so impressed with their attitude to learning, even after such a difficult year for them. We are very proud of them all. Only this week, during a Learning Walk in English, I witnessed our students, your children, acting out sections from their Oliver Twist text, whilst being able to tell me what they were learning, and why, and how this helped prepare them for their next steps in learning. The students spoke with precision and pride, recalling detailed knowledge and quotes from the text. It was phenomenal! • Year 8 – It is hard to believe our Year 8s have only five school weeks left before they move into Year 9 in August, when they will start to think about their next phase of education. During their Enterprise lessons, they have been experiencing the economic wider world, learning more and

knowing more about interest rates, exchange rates and inflation. I am sure we have a future entrepreneur, maybe even the next Prime Minister amongst them! • Year 9 – I have been thrilled to see our Year 9s mature during the past few months and become determined to work hard in classrooms, whilst having fun during lunchtimes playing lots of recreational sports. What is even more impressive is the collective team work and inclusive ethos they demonstrate, ensuring no one is left out or not able to take part. • Year 10 – Our Year 10 continue to prepare for their up and coming Mock exams. Revision guidance and support has been offered, amongst other opportunities, and I am pleased to say the vast majority are taking this experience seriously, as a part of their ongoing learning journey towards preparing for their final exams next year. It has been a real credit to them and their families, as to how they are stepping up to the challenge, despite a year of Covid and all its uncertainties. Revision information can be found on our website: https://www.thekibworthschool.org/docs/remotelearning/Useful_GCSE_remote_learning_sites_an d_information.pdf

Today was a special day; I had the privilege of awarding our Year 10 Prefects their ties. They had all participated in a rigorous selection process, including interviews and presentations. I look forward to working closely with them after half term. • Year 11 – Our phenomenal Year 11 continue to be the role models of our school; completing assessments, securing Post-16 places for further education, and remaining positive, calm and quietly determined not to let anything get in their way. This has included online work experience, securing part-time jobs that have led to apprenticeships, mentoring younger students, but to name a few.

I hope you and your families enjoy a happy and restful half term holiday.

Stay safe, stay healthy, stay positive.

Yours faithfully

MRS EMMA MERRY Principal

Consultation on school term and holiday dates

Have your say on future school term and holiday dates for Leicestershire.

Leicestershire County Council has launched a consultation to capture people’s views on three suggested options. The proposals cover term dates running for five years from autumn 2022 to summer 2027 and include:

• Keeping the ‘traditional’ county term time pattern, which offers an earlier summer holiday but means a longer autumn term • Aligning the autumn and spring breaks in line with most other authorities, including City, but again means a longer autumn term • Introducing a two-week autumn half-term break. This would leave terms ‘more balanced’ across the whole year but would result in shorter Easter break

More detailed information on these proposals and a chance to have your say via a short questionnaire can be accessed here www.leicestershire.gov.uk/term-dates-consultation

You can have your say at www.leicestershire.gov.uk/term-dates-consultation To request a paper copy, call 0116 305 6324 or email [email protected]

Leicester City Council is also running its own consultation on school term and holiday dates in the city at the same time. https://consultations.leicester.gov.uk/sce/termdates To request a paper copy, call 0116 454 1000.

Both authorities’ proposals reflect the same dates and we’re both asking for views on whether the term patterns followed by the city and county should match. The closing date for both consultations is midnight on Sunday, July 18.

Cabinet is set to consider the responses and make a decision for the county in the autumn.

Mr Inchley’s Science stars this week are: Erin B (10.3), Lucas H (9.1), Sophia J (8.6), Lillie W (10.6). Well done! Well done to Year 9 who have been doing their end of year exams this week.

What have we been doing…?

Mr Inchley’s Year 11 class have been designing and building (with Playdoh) streamlined cars. They then got to test their cars in a wind tunnel designed and build by Mr Inchley.

11.6 have been investigating diffusion using Skittles! This is a great experiment that you can do at home. Arrange your Skittles add water and watch the food colouring diffuse from an area of high concentration (the sweet) to and area of low concentration (the water). Check out the amazing patterns you can make!

7.4 completed a practical looking at the reactions of metal carbonates with acids with Miss Bennion.

11.5 completed a practical with sodium thiosulfate and hydrochloric acid to investigate how concentration affects the rate of reaction with Miss Bennion.
